I'm pretty open minded about who I might vote for in the next election. And, although it may be a surprise to some, even Hillary is in the running for my vote. I usually wait until its a little closer to the actual election before I make a choice, because from experience, a candidate who has espoused certain view points on issues will suddenly change them when they decide to run for President, and I like to see if that occurs before I make my mind up about their fitness and suitability for office. The impetus for this post was an article in a local paper about Fred Thompson: Opponents want dirt on Thompson: Former Tennessee U.S. Senator Fred Thompson is drawing nationwide attention for his ongoing flirtation with running for president. He is also drawing a little unwanted attention here in Nashville of a very different kind. Nashville law circles were abuzz last week about professional snoops – either private investigators or opposition research political types - combing public records in Metro buildings looking for potential dirt on Thompson. Property records seemed to be at the top of their list. The word trickled up to Republican Party sources, who insist it is Thompson’s potential GOP primary opponents looking for ammo to use should the television star make the race. Thompson running is a lock, according to GOP sources in the state who know him well. In fact, leading Tennessee Republicans surmise Thompson staying away from actively campaigning and being selective with media appearances is another sign he is going to get in the White House 2008 race. I like Thompson, and as a former Senator from a very close by state, I've kinda kept up with his general career, but I've not done an in-depth analysis of whether or not I'd vote for him, but purely on "gut feel", he would be the leading contender for me. This article was the first public hint to me that he was seriously going to run, and I thought it might be of interest to others as well. What's really fun to consider is the race if both Thompson and Gore - both Tennessee sons, both possible "stealth" candidates - both get into the race, the polling figures look like it would be a pretty close race. Anyone keeping up with the possibility of Gore getting in? FirmKY

I am now. But I have to admit I didn't really give it much thought until you posted the stats in another thread. Which is why I am getting particulary antsy about trying to make sure that people have all possible information and view candidates in an honest and realistic manner. Like that's going to happen! Smile I swear, I have no idea how I might end up voting. This 2008 election is probably the most scary I have ever looked at, and My vote weighs heavily.

All his enemies need to do is point to Hollywood, and say, as we've heard before "ENTERTAINERS SHOULD KEEP THEIR MOUTHS SHUT. HE'S PAID TO READ HIS LINES. HE'S GOT NO CREDIBILITY, BEING AN ACTOR. HE'S IN THE *UNION*." And the small-minded fools will turn right against him.

The democrats are in a classic Catch-22. The American Public is not going to be electing a woman. The American Public is not going to be electing a black man. If the democrats run another warmed over white guy they will lose a sizable portion of black and women voters who will stay home.

i don't know... wasn't he the one that rented a pickup truck and drove around the state putting on a good ol' boy act? i just can't support that sort of thing (didn't vote for Rootin' Tootin' Dubya, either). At least Gore is honest about being a rich urban weenie. i figure i'll be "throwing my vote away" on a Libertarian no matter what, so i'm not getting too worked up about the Quest For The Less Noticeable Evil yet. Gore is one of Tennessee's sons? He grew up In the Georgetown section of Washington. I don't like Fred Thompson, to "globey" for me. Senator Abba Dabba lost me when he said he'd "Double "Foreign Aid." Man, he's not too bright is he? "I'm gonna give even MORE of your hard earned Taxdollars away to foreign countries!" "Don't worry, we'll finance it by doing away with Pell grants and Medicaid!" "There'll be PLENTY of YOUR MONEY for foreign aid!" One of Hillary's people (spies!) must have got him to say that! And Democrats keep wondering why they lose elections when they run Pin Heads like Abba Dabba.

I tend to think we are going to get one of the following tickets. Gore / Obama or Gore / Clinton. I would put money on the first. Clinton supported the Iraq War and Obama didnt. Additionally, Gore can raise as much money as Clinton, and he has become a rational person now that he got the stick out of his ass the Democratic consultants shoved up there last election. Besides which, Clinton does not strike me as the type to play second fiddle, and I doubt Gore would want to be her running mate. Sinergy

Sinergy; I'm still waiting for you to provide us with a single example of an individual who became "real" after joining the Hollywood community. Or has that "Real Al Gore" spin been abandoned? Gore is a whining bitch. He has NO chance of capturing the middle. If he'd showed the slightest bit of class back in 2000, maybe, but after that fiasco, oh HELL no. The Dems are right to be nervous about Thompson. He comes across as very likeable and communicates ideas in a broadly understandable way. I caught a little clip of the Dem debates here in CA. Hillary is already losing her voice and getting shrill.

Who does have enough personality to win the election? The answer to your question is whoever is nominated by the Democrats will win. The Republicans have fractured into divisive factions and wont have anybody they can all agree on even after one of them wins the primary. Gore may not have much personality, but he has credibility and name recognition and fund-raising ability to beat Clinton. Sinergy

Why do any of you think Gore has got a snow ball's on Mars' melting ice cap of being elected? Americans's have elected two men who have lost a General Presdential Election, Grover Cleveland (who had the luxuy of running as a former office holder) and Richard Nixon. Cleveland's second term was a disaster and we all know what happened to Nixon. What do you think the Clinton people will do if he runs in the Primary? Sit on their hands and let him steal the nod from Mrs Clinton? I hardly think so.... The Clinton's play hard ball. Gore can't win.

I dont like Gore (or any of them) enough to rush to their defense. I find it amusing that many of you are trying to dogpile me because you seem to think I am a Gore supporter. Um. Ok. My comments were about who I thought will be elected. Not who I thought should be elected. TheHeretic, I dont recall you asking that question. However, since you asked. Please review the history of Jello Biafra. He was famous. He didnt lose his ideals when he became famous. He ran for vice President with Ralph Nader in the Green Party.

In fact the reason the Democrats won in 2006 is because both parties are fractured. The majority of the Democrats that won seats in the House are moderates or "conservative democrats." In fact, those moderate Democrats said there is no way in hell they would vote for more gun laws or for amnesty for illegals. And that is coming into conflict with the far left George Soros types. And you have Nancy Pelosi running away from every anti-war protest. The Dems are just as fractured as the GOP. Now the GOP I think can be brought together again if they find the right candidate. Someone like Fred Thompson who has been away from Washington and politics for awhile could come in and really steal the show. He has good poll numbers even in California. Sinergy, when you look at the poll numbers....this is still very much a 50/50 nation. Neither party has an advantage right now. The Dems have failed to push their agenda in congress. And the President has also failed. The approval rating of congress is 36%...the same as George W. Bush. Americans right now are not happy with either party. That's why an outsider has a good chance of winning in my opinion.
