Lesbians at higher risk for obesity: study
April 27, 2007

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Lesbians are twice as likely as heterosexual women to be overweight or obese, which puts them at greater risk for obesity-related health problems and death, U.S. researchers said.  (full story after the jump)

greetings,

imho, this is bullshit. it almost makes it sound like being a lesbian puts you at risk for being overweight. just because a large percentage of lesbians happen to be overweight doesn't mean anything...sexual identity has nothing to do with weight. it's a tendency; i seriously doubt they're going to isolate the "lesbian gene" and the "fat gene" in the same body.

this is one of my "and why are we spending money on this kind of crap science" rants. seriously. we could be studying something that actually has some social or medical importance...but that would be so much less sensationalist.

And then there's Rosie O'Dumbo.
Everytime she comes on the tv I hit CLICK.
Can't someone kidnap her and give her a laryngectomy?

Enyo -> RE: Just when it was safe to come back to the Forums, Fat Lesbians (5/1/2007 9:32:01 PM)

Stress leads to obesity as well...and many of the lesbians that I know have or have had considerable amounts of stress added to their lives because of their sexual orientation, whether it was created by work, family, friends or others....

This study seems very silly to me.

All joking aside, The American Journal of Public Health is a pretty serious outfit. They just don't go making up stuff up. I don't think they are making any connection that sexual idenity has anything to do with weight, only that obesity is greater in the Lesbian population and that it puts them at a greater health risks than heterosexual women.

IMHO....who cares????

eta:  this always starts me on my rant about the things that people get grant money to study!!

One time at the gym I saw two women working out and one of them had a shirt on that said "I LOVE LESBIANS" with a heart on it.
I said to her; "Hey! I love lesbians too, where can I get a shirt like that?"
They just scowled at me.
Not very friendly those lesbians!

Research studies are a dime a dozen. In a few years that will say oops we were wrong. I would have to see the subjects and control they did then see what criteria they used to decide if I see some validity to it. Theres a new study that comes out every week.

I made a shirt, that says I bat for both teams, with little baseballs and a bat on it. It gets a reaction whenever I wore it, I believe I gave it to a friend who really liked it.

If I were to do a weigh-in on any given night at the club i'd say there's a 50/50 split in terms of weight. There are certainly some very large lesbians and some very small lesbians... If I were to do a weigh-in on any given day at the market I'd say there were three really fat males for every average one, and most of the women are chunkbuttz to some degree, prolly four sweatasses for every one nice chxx... on that basis I'd think the lardy lads and ladies far outnumber the sleek in america, with lesbians actually being less hefty than the norm. assuming that hisannabelle, servilecat, and Casie are lesbians only annabelle is morbidly obese and you other two are quite kewt (no offense or anything personal intended annabelle, I'm sure your a very sweet girl, it was just to make a point that lesbians are actually less hefty than the great unwashed),  *smewtch* :)

Anabelle is defintally not morbidly obese. To be considered obese you have to 100lbs over what is considered a healthy weight she is defintally not 100lbs more than a healthy weight. And is FAR from "morbidly obese". And that was a very rude statment to say the least. Shame on you.

hisannabelle -> RE: Just when it was safe to come back to the Forums, Fat Lesbians (5/1/2007 11:09:52 PM)

greetings fatdomdaddy,

still, it makes it sound like (to me) that they are saying that lesbian women are at greater health risk simply because they are lesbian. being lesbian does not make you fat, therefore lesbian women aren't at greater health risk any more than heterosexual women simply because they have perhaps a higher population of overweight people. it just seems like they are overblowing the correlation, imho.

annabelle.

you are aware, of course, that research results can be skewed to prove whatever they set out to prove??  i was raised by a research scientist & most so-called "scientific studies" are bunk...take, for example, the fiasco of the hormone replacement therapy studies that "proved" that women who took HRT were at less risk of heart disease than those who didn't...imagine their surprise, then when women on HRT started dying from heart disease...turns out the first study didn't have women in it who had all other factors in common...big whoops, wouldn't you say???

MistressLorelei -> RE: Just when it was safe to come back to the Forums, Fat Lesbians (5/1/2007 11:28:11 PM)

If it were proven that lesbians were indeed larger than their straight sisters (which I highly doubt)....  the only thing that makes one bit of sense would be that lesbian women who are not trying to impress the male species.... actually don't starve themselves to please a gender which so often seems to place a bit too much importance on extreme thinness.

Just a thought.....

Sicarius -> RE: Just when it was safe to come back to the Forums, Fat Lesbians (5/2/2007 5:14:29 AM)

You know ... not that I'm taking a side in this one way or another, but I notice a lot of the ladies immediately refuting any possibility of this.

My question is, if being a lesbian is physiologically linked to a heightened "risk" of obesity, does that not actually serve your purposes by proving that lesbianism is physiological as opposed to psychological?  It would seem to me that despite the negative implications of the finding they're reporting, this is actually a "good thing" for the argument of being born this way.

Just my two cents.

Maybe it has something to do with all of the long johns that lesbians use as sex toys.

hisannabelle -> RE: Just when it was safe to come back to the Forums, Fat Lesbians (5/2/2007 7:07:15 AM)

greetings peepeegirl,

i am not -morbidly- obese. i'm about 50 lbs. above normal weight for my height, not 100. :) and i'm collared, and sexually used regularly (which i do find pleasurable) by someone who is most definitely male, so that disqualifies me from being a lesbian.

annabelle.
