I was the movie not that long ago. It is sad that geneocide is allowed to happen like that, but I don't know if the west could practically do anything about it. There was geneocide in Iraq as well, but in many respects the total damage of geneocide was less than the damage as a result of our interventions.(Yes I know past geneocide was not our primary motive for going into Iraq). As far as Rawanda is concerned what should the US or UN done. You have a large number of people intent on killing others. It would take a fairly large force to control this perhaps 50 to 100k. For all practical purposes Rawanda is "in the middle of no where" in that the US or UN have no significant military assets in the area. they would either have to take over a signifiant chunk of the country to make a military base or stage off the coast of tanzinia and run from aircraft carriers over tanzania. Then if we manage to control the country with lots of force...then what. It could take a generation or more of peace to stop the hatred, so the peace keepers may be stuck for 15 or 20 years, then when Darfur happens, and Somalia, and Iraq, and well sooner or later we, the west, run out of troops, and the people aren't willing to spend so much on the military. As sad as it is to realize, sometimes we, the west, can not fix everything. Bad things happen in this world. It does however make me realize that most any "problems" I am having are trivial, and all things considered I have a good life compared to many, and ought not take that for granted. B
