Yes the gay male hanky code was very elaborate, with the color and area displayed indicating all sorts of action the wearer sought to give or to recieve to others met in that gay bar or event. Many small and large events these days use a similar symbolism to display that one is a top/dom seeking a sub, a sub seeking a top/dom, or a switch seeking either or both power levels. Some events use colored ribbons, some use wrist bands, and some have pins or buttons a person can wear. There is no standard color scheme that covers different events, but most use red or orange to indicate top or dom. One may see a person wearing all three "flags" if they are open to play any role. One must bear it mind that most events only use these to indicate someone seeking play, so many who have partners and are not looking may not wear the "flags". In any event, wearing the "flag" does NOT commit anyone to play with anyone claiming to be what they seek, one still needs to negotiate a scene and respect the limits of others. "No thank you" is appropriate if one is not interested in someone.
