I just didn't feel right last weekend.  I was unemployed for 67 hours and it was in the back of my mind the whole time.  Just a twinge really, but I couldn't seem to really relax until I signed the paperwork for the new job, Monday morning.

What the hell happened???  I remember a weekend not that many years back, when my girlfriend and I independently quit our crappy jobs on a beautiful spring Friday afternoon.  We laughed our asses off when we both got home early and had a a few friends over to get loaded with us.  The party lasted until the money ran out, and then we ate rice until the first paycheck of the crappy new jobs.

I had the new gig lined up.  Worst case, I called my old boss and made a counter-offer to their 'stick-around' plea.  So why the hell couldn't I enjoy even joking about not having a job?  Weird.

Maybe you should practice saying "Would you like to super-size that value meal"

That doesn't explain it.  I'm old and wise enough to live within my means and keep a little cushion, but there was zero risk here.

I'm genuinely puzzled about this one.  WTF?

Ain't gonna happen.  Unloading the delivery truck of frozen patties and fries at 2am if we wind up with another Jimmy Carter style economy, maybe.

I quit a job and jumped on a plane the same day.....Totally spontaneous.....What has happened to us?....You know there is a bong in the basement...And what is that I hear?...."Run, rabbit run. Dig that hole forget the sun...When at last your work is done...Don't sit down it's time to dig another one".... Is that our youth calling out to us?...Or just the way things have become?....lol.

Could you do me a favor and tell my manager where she can shove my job?  That powerhungry bitch is driving me crazy.  I'd do it myself, however, got a mortgage and a carpayment and live alone...

i would really like to personally kick everyone who makes fun of fast food workers.

seriously. it's one of the rudest, stupidest, most irritating things on the planet.

anyway, heretic, i can understand what you mean...and hell, i'm still young. it's just that the thought of being unemployed freaks me out. then again, i'm a bit ocd when it comes to paying bills and having money in the bank account and all that kind of stuff...the thought of surviving on ramen sends me into absolute anxiety attacks (and not because i don't like ramen).

annabelle.

Just don't do a UPS job.  I had one before.  Decent pay, great benifits.  But always exhaused and slept most of the day until work and sore all the time from being hit with random boxes.
UPS = evil.
UPS competaters = even more evil.
Quiting UPS = sudden grasp of having purpose in life.

Hey Heretic,

You need to change your "inner-voice", the one that is always telling you
what you should be doing as a responsible adult.

Go play like have not done in years, visit a nudist colony,
swing on a rope across a river, sky-dive, bungee-jump.

Let go of your past and plunge head-long into your future.

You are most likely adding years to your life by doing what
you want to do as opposed to what was expected of you.

About 10 years ago I had a thriving Interior Design business, I was driving into the office one morning and just thought bollocks, I sold my shares to the parent company handed in the car and office keys and walked out. I took 2 years off and did all the things I thought I had missed out on the details of  which I will not bore you with. The bottom line is I had a brilliant time.

Fastforward 10 years and last January I sold another company with the idea of doing the same, downsized on the house moved to a remote area all was bliss, last week I applied for a job well below my skill set working in a medical practice and have been short listed. Why am I doing this,  not really sure, could be I need to do something and dont want the pressure of going into another senior position and commuting.

Try not to take it personally, Annabelle.  I seem to remember seeing a statistic once that better than 1/2 the US population has worked fast food at some point in their lives.  We can joke all we want about it.  Somewhere, buried deep, I still have my 6 month pin from McDonalds

It's a lousy job.  Maybe it's THE lousy job, the way sweeping streets is THE low status job.  Funny thing is, FF workers bust ass in an unpleasant environment.  It's hot at the grill or fryer and the customers are a pain.

Once you bring your skills up, you'll move on to something better and join us in the "you want fries with that" joke.

You're getting old?

I spent nine years travelling when I was young and didn't have a steady job in all that time, just doing this and that, any old job I could earn a little money. I slept in stations and bus stops from Lisbon to Istanbul and beyond, bummed around eastern (communist) Europe, the middle east and across Canada. However, the thought of sleeping under the stars at my age no longer seems like an adventure and I like to have a padding of money in the bank as an insurance policy. I still won't do a job I don't like for long, life is too short and anyway, I work for myself now.

Can I wait until the health insurance kicks in on the new job?

and it's those sentiments that bother me. i LIKE my job. my boss is a pain in the ass sometimes, but i work with some great people and most of our customers are regulars and they are very sweet. i also have coworkers who, like myself, are getting their education or who are college-educated. one of my coworkers is a retired science teacher. so the idea that fast food workers must not have marketable skills is ridiculous.

i could go back to being a freelance webdesigner and make a hell of a lot more than i am making right now. the fact is, i got tired of chasing down my paycheck, putting all my energy into a job that i really only need to get me through school, because once i finish school, i'll be doing something else. i have options: i can work full-time plus in a job that gives me so much stress that i have a hard time keeping up with schoolwork, when it's a job that i need to GET me through school, or i can work full-time plus at a job where i at least know when i'm getting a paycheck and where i don't have to put all of my energy into it, which means that i'll have time and energy left over for school, which is what i want to focus on anyway. so i decided to do bookkeeping and cashiering instead - it's a steady paycheck and a hell of a lot less creative and emotional stress.

the idea that just because people work in fast food they must be in some sort of rut or have no marketable skills is what really bothers me.

annabelle.
