HatarAes -> anyone have vista? its driving me insane. (5/2/2007 10:21:38 PM)

if anyone has mcrosoft vista and would like to help me out for a sec. it would be greatly appreciated. it really argues with me over everything. i always have problems downloading things, it yells at me for turning off the firewall. i cant use any file sharing programs, no matter what i try. theres so many things disabled and i dont know where to find the lil check box to enable em. it will tell me its having problems loading web-sites...but then when i hit diagnose the problem, it tells me there is no problem...wtf!?

spanklette -> RE: anyone have vista? its driving me insane. (5/2/2007 10:27:05 PM)

We were having problems with it on another computer...it wasn't Vista. It was the files that aren't compatable with Vista yet. We were able to find a number of Vista patches to correct some of the software problems...the patches were found for the software itself, not Vista.

Hope that helps. I'm pretty sure it doesn't, but I tried![:D]

When it comes to systems designed to be as prioritized as Vista is- good luck!
It's going to be awhile until I can afford it.  Probably just going to wait until my next computer to even bother.

I don't know much about Vista, but here's some things I'd try.

-Taking down all the fire walls, spam filters, popup blockers, content filters, security, etc.  Just make sure you only visit sites you know to be safe and not use file share programs for this short test run.  It'll give you an idea of how much just plain  isn't working and how much of the problem's being contributed to by the block features.

-Making sure the programs you've downloaded, such as fire-share, are compatiable with Windows Vista.  My slave recently got it on her laptop.  To play Diablo II, she had to run it in compatiability mode (Google-able).  I managed to find a good post on some random message board that happened to have all the Diablo II compatiablity specs for her (since it's an older game and behind the times).  So, I'd check up the fireshare program sites, download Vista-specific versions, and try running them in compatiablity mode for systems you know they work with (such as 98/ME/2000).

-Tracking down a friend or coworker who knows a good bit about computers.  There's a lot that can be done when someone who's used to being on them a lot gets their hands on them.  They may be able to figure out some of the things for you.

Anyhow, again, good luck with it.

Vista is a wonderful OS and, as the young lady said: It's the people that haven't bothered to write drivers and software for Vista, yet. Maybe they were hoping it would be as big a mess as Win95 was. I don't know. What I have found to be the only problem is that Vista does NOT allow other programs to use the audio resources, freely. As someone who records music and such on my comp., that's an issue.

All-in-all, it's a good program and if you need some help, I'll give you what I can.

I would NOT recommend turning off your firewalls. The windows firewall, in Vista, tests as good as any of the commercial ones out there that I have found. I use the PC cilin (Trend Micro) virus scanner with the windows firewall and I am fine.

I would NOT recommend turning off the User Access Control (UAC). While the UAC can, initially, be a pain in the ass, it teaches itself, as you use your comp, which programs you use on a regular basis and, eventually, it stops asking you if you want to run them, if you recognize them, etc.

I have Vista, and I love it.

Isn't the WHOLE POINT of Windows "Compatibility?"

And if Vista is incompatible with XP (and ALL THE OTHER Windows Code out there ), and you need re-training, why not just get a real computer, like a Mac or Ubuntu?

Firewalls ON the equipment you're trying to protect are a joke. If the computer isn't running any un-necessary services, then it's pointless. Just don't run anything unnecessary. If MSFT ships an insecure configuration, with vulnerable systems running REQUIRING a firewall on the workstation, well, consider that when you make your choices.

Firewalls at the interface between your home LAN and the WAN link provided by your ISP ( think Linksys Residential Gateway/Router ) are the way to go.

For fifty bucks you have a real hardware device upstream keeping people away from your gear.

Yes! A MAC! I forget. How many steps does it take to uninstall a program from a MAC?

MACs are irrelevent. 85% of ALL the computers in the world run Windows. Why would I purposely put myself "on the outside, looking in"?

Because your productivity is more important than just being one of the 85%?

My POV is different than most. I use computers to do real work and move the heavy freight.

For those cases, It's a Linux system until you need the 24x7 features of Big Iron ( in which case, you load your Linux image up on a few CPUs of an IBM Mainframe. )

Why? Because as a programmer, MSFT has failed to deliver the environment and tools which facilitates getting the Job Done. Shit, even SQL server "Clustering" is only a hot-spare-failover.

In what we consider "trivial" uses ( such as running a web-brower to get to a real server based application ) Windows PC's are fine. And we can reload them back to scratch in about an hour, so maintenance isn't TOO BIG a headache...

Wow. Now I see why everyone is telling me not to upgrade to Vista for a couple of years.

Q: "Why does Dell charge 120 bucks to load the Open Source Ubuntu instead of Windows Vista?"

A: "Because it's worth it"

TrainerWanted -> RE: anyone have vista? its driving me insane. (5/3/2007 6:44:50 AM)

Yes a lot of people have got Vista... in particular, anyone who bought a PC in the last couple of months, whether they like it or not.   In my store, we've run out of "old" machines with XP on them - although we do still sell XP on the shelves.
A few people have tried to uninstall V and reload XP, with varying degrees of success.

The major problem may be that MS didn't release the code to anyone not in the "favoured few", the close personal friends of Bill Gates.. this left a lot of major software providers floundering, and having to start designing their upgrades on the day Vista hit the streets.  This is particularly true of people like Symantec and McAfee, because MS want you to use *their* security tools, and not buy anyone else's.  Right now, you buy a product that has a sticker on the box saying "Don't install this.. toss it away and contact us for the real thing."

Small, specialist companies are in even bigger trouble -  they rely on market-specific software, written specifically for their business niche, by programmers who were hired to do the job...  the people who provided the software are having to start over, maybe with new coders, or maybe they can still find the original contractor and hire them back...  but, again, not until Vista was on the shelves.  In the interim, a lot of people in the legal, real estate, financial and medical fields are praying very hard that they don't have to replace their office computer before the updates are ready .

I've got a steady stream of people coming to the store and complaining that their peripherals don't work, on their new comnputers. That can generally be fixed by getting the vista-updated drivers for them...  but why did MS have to change the driver interface anyway?

In general, I would not advise anyone to buy any Microsoft product until it's been through at least one major update...  they have a bad habit of letting their customers do their quality control for them.

Sadly, because my customers out there didn't take that advice, I have to have Vista on most of my backup machines... but my personal computers are staying on XP for some time to come.

The arguments about MAC, and the various 'nixes and 'nix-alike system are really not relevant here...  the original question was about Vista, so the poster obviously uses a Windows environment...   so do most of the personal and business users that I deal with.  So, the topic wasn't presented as an opportinuty to promote other systems, it was asking specifically about V

ObDisclaimer:  I used a lot of weasel-words in the above, like "seems" and "maybe"... that means I'm not expressing any firm views or opinions, simply passing on what I see. Not am I speaking on behalf of my employers, who kindly send me a pay cheque every week. The reason that I say this is that major corporations like MS don't take kindly too critcism - allegedly.
Whatever it is, it's not my fault. The voices in my head made me do it. Batteries not included. Your mileage may vary

Aubre -> RE: anyone have vista? its driving me insane. (5/3/2007 10:47:15 AM)

Well, all I know is I have a Core Duo system that has dual boots Vista and Ubuntu Fiesty and Ubuntu has been a much more satisfying experience over all. It is much more responsive.

HatarAes -> RE: anyone have vista? its driving me insane. (5/3/2007 12:03:04 PM)

i did notice that it has stopped asking me a few of the retarded questions, but i think its being, a lil too protective of me. it tries telling me access is denied, but im the one whose supposed to deny access? i did get screwed with the mcafee...im going to get rid of that shortly, it tried to stop me from going on the web today three times. imma put the windows firewall up for now cuz i dont need it to be off. i asked people today andthey said there is a big problem with the security on the computer, but eventually it should get worked out. so i suppose ill sit on my hands for now, try to find some loop holes.

thanks for the help...till next time same bat time same bat channel.

you might want to look into Avant anti-virus - it is free and it supports vista.

also, and it is point number one, if you don't set it up at the start with you as "administrator" you will have accidentally set it up as a user, and have to ask yourself if you can do stuff, then give yourself permission! not much fun that. look for the way to get an "administrator" account!!!!! all else is flim flam.
