I was just reading an article in Yahoo News that said if the Socialists lose the election on Sunday there will be wide-spread violence throughout the country. Any of our European posters know anything about this?

It's not that it's poor sportmanship. It's that France, once a good country (regardless of what Bushites may say), has turned into a decrepit no man's land with nothing left but a remnant of culture and culinary good taste. All that made the country good (social system, healthcare, education, fun foreign policy) has turned to ash. All that made the country crap (racism, fascists, the future president french-kissing Dubbya, and new economy suckers) has blossomed as if it had been showered with fertilizer bought at bulk price from Monsanto. France needs a bloody good revolution again (hell, that's what we... sorry, they, specialise in). It's the only way to turn things around. Remember the lyrics to the national anthem? Oh you probably don't know them... well I'll share with you later *wink.

Chances are the socialists will lose because they haven't really got any policies and Royal has started to look like a potential president too late. France seems ready for a big change and it seems like the right have won the argument. France has a history of rioting and direct action and politicians let it run and let the crowds burn of steam, it really isn't a big deal. When Brits riot, there really is a problem but to the French, rioting is a phase you go through before accepting the inevitable.

Socialists are going to lose big time. Segolene Royal (Socialist canidate) lost the debate the other day and lost her temper. Now she has resorted to scare tactics in order to get votes. She's finished. She had little chance to beat Sarkozy anyway. Will there be violence and protests. Probably. Socialists always protest and demonstrate when they lose elections. Nothing new about that.

I thought Royal was the most impressive she had been and had the measure of Sarkozy who didn't impress that much and at times seemed more concerned about not losing his temper than taking part in the debate. But then he was out in front in the polls and could afford to play a defensive game. It will be a surprise if Royal wins but I wouldn't count it out. When the French go to the polls and think about what Sarkozy's policies will mean, they might balk at vting for him. Oh and in France, it is not unusual for the right to riot and take direct action. It is a national pass time.

This just makes me laugh... The elitist, peace loving smarter than the room, French left. So civilized, so well mannered, so advanced socially and politically. So... so... tolerant! Islam is wreaking havoc on the French culture and language so the people *ARE* staging a "bloody good revolution" kitten and hoping to elect someone who will do something about it.

Money was not their motivating factor. It was their religion. 10% of the French population is muslim. 55% of those immigrants do not have a job at all! They are living off the state. And the non-immigrant French population has a declining birthrate. It's simple mathematics. France has a problem. A serious one.

I'm aware terrorists are usually middleclass well educated nihilists but the rioters in the French suburbs were not middleclass, educated or nihilists, they were enclaves of a poor underclass who merely want to be on the inside of society and not on the outside. EDIT Not all the rioters were muslim, there were many christians and many whites too. There is a significant majority of the 10% muslims that are well educated, have good jobs and believe in a secular France. I've lived there. My ex wife's cousin married a muslim in Paris and their children are not brought up in any faith and none of his family have a problem with that, it is just normal.
