ORIGINAL: Sinergy Get rid of your carpets and drapes and repaint the place. Get rid of old furniture. Teach the animals to stay off the furniture. Spend the time necessary at home (this one is a bitch) to fully house train the animal. Or it stays outside. More importantly, when you have object A (cups, keys, wallet, etc) determine a place for this to be and train yourself to always return it to the place. Make rules and stick by them like a) All dishes cleaned and put away before bedtime. b) Bed made in the morning. c) Clean up messes right when you do them. You may have difficulty teaching your UMs this. I took the approach that any of their crap in my part of the house (i.e. not their room) was put away before they went to bed or it would disappear. Saved money on Christmas and Birthday presents. It is not easy. It is actually a complete pain in the ass. But the trade off is the house is clean. Which is how I wanted to live. It is like painting a room. The more time and effort you put in to the prep work, the quicker and better the finished job turns out. Sinergy I did the carpet and drapes thing. I now have wall-to-wall linoleum and since I work nights, my windows are only covered in tin foil. I did repaint the place but am still working on replacing furniture. Getting the animals housebroken is pretty easy...the problem is that every time I get one housebroke, it goes to a new home and then I've got a new one that needs to be housebroken :P I'm actually pretty good at housebreaking except for with my chihuahuas...they've never been 100% and I'm starting to suspect it's a chi thing. Putting the tiny chis outside is not an option...my front yard doubles as turn out for the horses. Staying off the furniture has been a hard one for me too...I can get it with the big dogs but the small dogs and cats don't seem to pick it up as well. I'm pretty good about picking up after myself (it's just me here.) It's mostly THEM that's the issue. I love them and wouldn't trade what I do for ANYTHING but it's a constant job keeping this place clean and it's very frustrating to clean as much as I do and people still think your house is dirty because it smells bad! Thank you for the advice...I'm still working on the furniture thing!
