Unexpectedly - Darcy and I were able to go see this at the weekend.

So OK - I was impressed.
I have to say it was pretty brutal and personally, I found the soundtrack .very.very. - hugely - .cool.
Not for someone with a weak stomache, and I am a BIG Robert Carlyle fan anyway.
Direction was good.  First 5 minutes totally had me hooked for the rest of the film which completely flew by even though it was short of 100minutes ish.
Sticking in the UK trailer here.  If you like your 'zombie' movies - go see!  Totally recommended.

How did it stack up with the first one? When I see a horror sequel I get worried that it's just going to be the same thing I saw in the first one. I was actually going to pass on this one because it didn't look like anything new to me.

plot this time - US troops have landed in the UK (setting up base in London) combatting the last of  the Rage virus and life is slowly returning to London as families / survivors are reunited however (and there's always a however) someone carrying the virus is among the survivors....

I'm a huge fan of the original and I must admit I was a little skeptical as to how they would appraoch this sequel, but I was pleasantly surprised by the movie.

Though also shot on DV, as the first was, this one has a much more 'in your face' feel, and the various scenes of the infected attacking are very intenses - hand held, shaky, disorienting shots which work beautifully.

The way in which they reintroduce the virus is very good as well, and proves to have a devasting emotional effect on one of the lead characters (which I won't go into, but there are two scenes which book-end this familial plot thread which work magnificently. Robert Carlisle is, as ever, magnificent (and this, surprisingly is only his second horror movie, the first being 1999's Ravenous in which he played the leader of a cannibal cult), and the rest of the cast, particularly the two younger actors, are more than up to scratch.

Overall I was very impressed, and can't wait for the DVD.

(btw, greycap - though this is set in the same 'universe', the plot and even the London settings are sufficiently different that, as was the case with .dark., you could see and enjoy this as a stand alone movie without having seen the first, and also see a completely different perspective (some being from the POV of the infected) on the whole affair. Highly recommended.)

enjoyed Ravenous too - adding that to my DVD horror collection (as a Mother's Day present)

Sorry Dark- 28 Weeks debuted at #2 in the States, only earning $10 mil its first weekend.  Spiderman may have dropped 60% in profits from last week, but it still sucked up most of the money (likely all the people who avoided opening weekend crowds).

But unless it doesn't get crushed by more upcoming blockbusters, it might have a chance to build some steam.

Its a big two months here for the Box Office. Spiderman 3 came out last week. Shrek 3 comes out this week. and Pirates of the Carribean 3 comes out next week. Then another horror comes out in Hostel: Part II in the first week of June.

So 28 Weeks Later is coming out at a very competitive time. The only good thing going for it is that Spiderman, Shrek, and Pirates are all geared towards families and kids, and most of them wont be going to see horror anyway. Since it is really the only horror out right now, 28 weeks should draw in those horror fans. Hostel might end it's run though in a few weeks.

I guess it was pretty obvious Spidey would swoop the #1 slot.  I havent been to see it as yet, may go this week.  But 28weeks did rock even as a stand alone film.

Peace
