For me it definitely means understanding and being comfortable and accepted in the homosexual kinky world to start with.  If you don't have that, I don't care how much leather you wear or buy or how much you do for the kinky world, I won't consider you part of the leather community.

It's also part of why I don't think I ever will be.

Beyond that, leather to me means identifying with a code of conduct, protocol and social organization.  It means being part of a family with structure and rules based on seniority and social permissions from the others in the family/culture.

Leather is the main symbol and heart of it all- but not what everything is about.

I occasionally find myself longing for that sort of sense of belonging, that sense of pride and raw edge that comes with being "leather" but it's just not me- I wouldn't be comfy there and they wouldn't be comfy having me there.  I'm happy to have the few friends that I do in the leather culture.

edited to add - if archer chimes in here i can probably just say ditto to whatever he has to say - he, to me, is an excellent example of a leatherman

Leather, When I speak of Leather I think of men returning from war, men who learned they were not alone, that there were other men who were gay and wanted something to be other than the stereotype of the "mary" sissy boys they had been taught was what homosexuals were like. I think of men who had learned brotherhood, discipline,  integrity, and other values that made men, men in battle and returned to the states located their brothers and passed on those traditions and values they had formed. I think of the rough  trade days, Biker bars of the 50's and 60's where the men circulated and mixed with each other and took the traditions and built upon them. I think of the need to confidenciality because homosexuality was liekly to get you jailed or beaten by the cops or both. I think of jobs lost because someone found out. I think of that community banding together to protect their own first from discovery and later from HIV. I think of community action to help brothers and family, and then turning the activism and fundraising to a wider group of charities. Leather conveys a sense of family formed by choice rather than bloodlines.

Leather was chosen because it was the road armour they wore to protect them while they rode. It adapted to be the armour that protected them from bashers, from folks who still felt the need to attack someone because they were different. Symbolic they were not the sissy boys that the bashers thought them to be. Men testing their limits of pain, of love, of discpline.

Fast forward through the years of exclussivity to the years of activism and the ranks swell with first lesbians who had formed their own groups parrallel to the men's groups, and a few radical heteros who saw beyond the gay label and saw people practicing radical sex, forming lovong relationships, celebrating themselves. On through the years as they shifted from exclussivity to inclussivity a merging of BD-SM lifestyle people who had shared many of the same publications and contact mags.

These are the things I see when I look back at the history of what is now called Leather.

uh...yeah what he said.  Great post.

A fetish, both of sex and power.

But...something more, too. It's indicative of a way of life for some, a set of beliefs for others. You don't have to WEAR leather to BE leather, something I learned when I met Sir Stephen and slave cathering. I'd have never said that before I got to know them.

Leather is primal, possibly it connects us with what we are or can be-animals.

Love the stuff, always have, the touch, the smell and the feel, sort of homely in a sense, part of us.

...and armour

Leather!   Another label that is tossed around.  I am sure it means different things to different people.

So.. What does Leather mean to you?

if you are asking for an immediate response, and not a philosophical one>>
the immediate picture that pops into my head:

"leather =  biker, biker jacket and motorcycle seat "

To me... leather means the difference between serious road rash and just bruises. It's also protection from hard shelled insects smacking you in the arm at 60 miles an hour and it helps keep you warm and half-ass dry in the rain... But that's the biker in me, I see leather as a necessity.

Jewel

LOL that was my first thought too Miss Jewel; that it was protection from the road .

Okay, I gotta admit.... A guy with a nice ass in leather chaps, a vest, and boots... nothing else... To me, that's the real pleasure of leather!!

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH MY GOSH.........please........stop teasing me

Well... what fun would that be? Speaking of fun... I have one such picture in someplace... the subject in it is Scooter Himself... damn nice ass!!!

This adult female person (there's a few labels, right there, that often come in handy to use) actually likes labels.  They serve a very useful purpose.  i label pretty much everything, to help me stay more organized and find things quicker.  Labels help me to know where to find what i'm looking for, whether it's a book in the Library or food in the grocery store or a person on a relationship site.

i really don't understand why some people get so upset with the use of labels.  For me, it's nothing more than a basic generalization to let others know how i identify myself and helps me to know how someone else identifies themself.  Labels are just one way of sorting ourselves and helping us to find what we're looking for.  Then again, if i just want to see what's available, i'll just ignore the labels and simply browse.

Words can mean different things when used in different contexts, depending on what i'm reading or discussing or thinking about.

When i think of "Leather", different things come to mind, depending on where my mind is, at the time.

Leather ________:
seats = comfortable, durable, nice looking, easy to clean, hot in summer/cold in winter.
clothes = vests, pants, jackets = bikers, motorcyle clubs.
suede = type of leather (skirts, boots, jackets) i like to wear.
"Distressed leather" = bomber jacket, looks and smells great on any man.  Very manly.
whips = mmm......love the sensual feel and the "SNAP" sound they make and the sting they give me and the welts they leave on my skin.
Leather Men = gay men.
Leather Club = fetish social group.

Everything is relative.

i did say boots.  Doesn't that count as a type of shoe?

But, you're right, there's nothing like wearing a well-made pair of real leather shoes to make you feel good.  Cheap shoes suck!

BOOTS!!!!  short boots, tall boots, taller boots and the tallest boots!  Leather, patent, shiny, suede, black, brown, red.  2" heels up to 6" heels.  Feeling the closeness as I slide my foot into them, and wrapping my calf and sometimes more, in the leather as I zip or lace them up.
Sitting high up in a chair while watching a precious little sub show off their bootblacking skills, working the leather and bringing them to a lusterfull shine.

Ok, now that I got that out of my system.  I could never put the sentiment that Archer shared into more eloquent terms, so I will just say ditto.

I also think of Leather as a chosen family, with a sharing of beliefs and ideals and protocols.

*hides her white patent leather 'granny boots' with the 5" stiletto heels in the very back of ... er somewhere then watches the shoe and boot groupies closely*

To the OP, since I don't want to completely hijack the thread, I don't know enough about the Leather community to really make a judgement, but I do appreciate the posts of Archer and others who identify as Leather.  I also appreciate the Leather community's dedication to education and preserving the history of wiitwd.  I feel they are part of the reason I can go the local adult toy store and find at least a few fetish items too.  I have had exposure to several (very varied) motorcycle clubs and understand some of the 'club family' aspects from that perspective.  So overall, even if I don't understand exactly what it means to be Leather, they do have my respect as a group.

As to leather as a material for making things.... mmmmmm..... um, let's just leave it at that, shall we?

To me, "Leather" is evocative of a community of serious BDSM enthusiasts (as opposed to weekend warriors).  Whereas "leather" is an animal hide that can be made useful in some pretty interesting ways.

Agreed.
