how much can you afford? how much do you want it and how much use will you get out of it? If its something you want and will use and can afford why not get it? Unless of course you are saving all your pennies for your heirs when you are gone.

I'd say if it interferes with your ability to finance other things in you life, it is too much. If you feel guilty about it then it might be money or something else you feel guilty about and you should probably explore those reasons. In general I only buy something that I really want. In fact I don't think I've bought equipment in years simply because I only have Fox right now and we have what we need. The things I have bought I took time to find, test, and then think about before I bought them.

i don't have a lot of disposable income, it took me 4 years to buy my first toy...however it was a $225 4 ft single tail made by an excellent whip maker at a national event...i prefer to spend my money on going to events ($700 an event if i am very frugal and plan ahead months...easily $1000 if i am not so frugal and still plan ahead months...so far i have been able to go to 2 events this year...i have one event planned for this coming feb, i want to go to another next fall that will be a bit more, looking at around $1200 on a very frugal budget...but i have to also look at that i want to go to Spain in 2009...anyway...) and then furniture...i don't have my own house, there would be no point...so nope, i don't spend a penny on it...i prefer to shop around for fetish clothes and find individuals that will custom make it...so i don't have a whole lot yet... it's amazing what you can do with very little when you really want something.... but, as for too much to spend...i'll echo the other responses...it is too much to spend when you're neglecting your other bills to pay for your kinky stuff...if you have the money, spend it...don't let anyone let you feel guilty for spending it on stuff you enjoy...its the same as buying electronics or crap for your car....just comes in a different package... take care chelle

That made me feel a hell of a lot better, I have savings, that are not being saved for anything, they are just there because, I didn't want to spend them (I'm wierd), so yeah, I spent a little, then felt bad. It depends on the person, really. As for Myself, I've had to reoutfit the toy bag in this past year, so the expense was a bit higher at first. That is just a portion on what I spend on 'lifestyle' expenses, as I also like to get to events. It's like anything else that a person spends money on. If it's interfering with paying your regular expenses, it's too much.

It all depends on your budget. I use Crown Financial Planning (www.crown.org , and religious beliefs aside, they DO have a good software program), and I have set in my budget "fun money" for every week. There are times when I don't use my allotted "fun money", so I have the option of either putting that aside into my savings...or occassionally splurging a little on myself. I also have a clay pot at home that I drop all of the change from the bills that I break (which REALLY helped to lighten my purse!), and when I fill that pot, I'll count up and roll the coins, and buy myself a toy or two. It's petty change I don't really miss in my budget, but it's my way of still putting aside a little at a time for my own enjoyment. It really helps to actually sit down and figure out what your budget is. I have way too many coworkers (who have more tenure, so get paid more than I do) who live paycheck to paycheck because they can't use money responsibly. Try not to put things on the credit cards (or if you do, pay it off as SOON as the bill comes), that way your kink isn't sending you on your way to huge financial debt. Have fun, but be responsible!

Remember---there are tons of "toys" available at the Dollar Store, Hardware Store, Kitchen Store, etc.. that won't break the bank. Clothespins, spanking spatulas, rope, chain, padlocks, duct tape, candles--the list goes on and on and I'm sure there are tons of threads here on cheap but effective home-made toys.

And for me, toys come way down on the desires list. So even though I now have the income to buy one or two nice toys a month- I prefer going to movies or dinner or trips out of town so I actually don't buy very often. I usually save up for a convention when I know there will be a lot of vendors competing together and I can try lots of toys right there on the floor.

I don't think there's really any limit so long as it's not cutting into the money needed for basic functioning, as with any hobby or interest. Most folks have one or three interests that after paying the bills they pour their cash into... Mine tend to be body jewelry, makeup, books, and electronics.

Thrift stores are a kinky gal's best friend. If you are concerned about how much money you are spending on fetish wear, try shopping at the local thrift store. You'd be amazed at what a few dollars and a little creativity will yield. Best wishes H

Yeah, "how much" is really, really relative. There's a guy on another board i'm on who picked up a $1000+ custom vacuum bed and thought nothing of it, because he has the bucks. There are several folks on here with Sybians, and you can see what those go for. Most people spend more modestly. As long as you can still pay your other bills and it makes you happy, it's not "too much". i've spent at least $1k on gear this year, on everything from a $150 flogger to a "Dollar Store Challenge" (get 23 pervertibles at the dollar store in half an hour or less). Let's hear it for Dual Income, No Kids [:)] When i had more time and less money, there were projects that i put 40+ hours of labor into, and that has its own cost.

If i added up all i have in my personal collection in clothing gear and tools of enjoyment i am sure i coulda bought a small ranch in momtana .Though my collection as taken more than 20 years to get where it is .Now i have a very short and premium list of items i have yet to get ,that is unless i see a MUST have object .Is there such thing as too much when this is who i am what i do how i live what brings me pleasure in life ?I think not !I have seen some people spend hunderds even thousands on a one night concert ticket/s .I have seen some spend many thousands on a car ,a home ,a pet ,vacations ,sports .To me its silly to spend mega bucks on climbing gear to go out and climb a rock , just as i am sure some would say the same at me spending money on a high end single tail or violet wand kit . Life is too short go with what makes you happy ,as long as your priorities are correct IE: pay the bills food and selter ,family,then bdsm fetish items when you can afford them i see no limit .It may take some time in some case to aquire the items on your list but thats part of the fun too . Most all of my items hold a story of when and where i got it or who gifted it to me , or when i made the item .I would not say go out to your bank and say you want thousands in a loan to aquire toys and gear , take your time and enjoy the journey ,buy what speaks to you , and buy quality .Spending a lil more now , its better than buying it cheapw/ poor workmanship and having to rebuy over and over again .

Here's an idea: you're a switch, right? So cultivate a few play partners, and tell then you demand toys and fetish clothing as "tribute." If you drop hints properly, they'll probably think it was their own decision!
