BenevolentM -> Sleep of Reason (7/14/2012 7:21:33 AM)

I believe in God, but I can also appreciate what the doubters have to offer. God made them too. I do not always believe what they say is cogent, however. Skepticism has a place, just don't get overly carried away with it. It too is a religion.

In response to "The Erosion of Progress by Religions" the religious have a point though you are intentionally ignoring it.

In response to "James Randi: Sleep of Reason" I am a Christian mystic and as such I am familiar with the topic. I suspect some mystics given into peer pressure. In order to be recognized you have to give the crowd what it wants and those who have given in figure what they are doing is benign, little white lies.

Do watch the videos and add your commentary. In post 108 in the ObamaCare and Mandatory Automobile Insurance thread I wrote:

I may have made a sexist remark or two, but I'm a Dom. There was a time when I concerned myself with reputation, but no longer. I saw how ugly it is. My reputation with God is good. Why is that? Because you are wholesome and good?

I am not one to please the crowd nor am I one to preach to the choir.

In other words, sometimes you need to bend a few spoons to get people to acknowledge your real supernatural abilities?

It is kind of like how mnottertail put it in post 239 in the Affordable Care Act and Its Implementation thread.

quote:

ORIGINAL: mnottertail

the torus, the pheonix, the tao, we are so immured with it, we shall not see it, or never know it, except thru a veil darkly......

If the situation was an either-or situation where it must be exactly one or the other, finding the truth would be fairly easy, but that isn't the real world per se. Things are a bit more complicated, more difficult than that.

BenevolentM -> RE: Sleep of Reason (7/14/2012 8:01:57 AM)

Because the truth can be so difficult to discern mnottertail says in post 273 in the Affordable Care Act and Its Implementation thread the following:

quote:

ORIGINAL: mnottertail

and it is all shit.

There is a certain poetry in his words.

I think we need a "Hey I'm Off My Meds" forum....y'know?!!!

BenevolentM -> RE: Sleep of Reason (7/14/2012 10:20:55 AM)

I found the videos well worth watching and worth commenting on.

You're not aware of the provenance of the quotation Randi uses as a title, are you?
"The sleep of reason produces monsters": a fine painting by Goya that shows the perils of hysteria.
If you're going to make out that you're better informed than any fucker else on the forum, it behooves you to pick up on this shit, dig?

That was an excellent contribution to the topic Moonhead. I found what you said very interesting and I would have to agree that as a rule of thumb that the sleep of reason does produce monsters. The political divisions between the skeptics and the religious is not reason, however.

Your prowess does not intimate me Moonhead since men of substance are badly needed. It is a credit to you that you knew something that I did not.

What a beautiful vocabulary you have Moonhead. If only you were a female submissive.

If I was, I'd be worried about getting stalked, sunshine.

The viewer might read this as a portrayal of what emerges when reason is suppressed and, therefore, as an espousal of Enlightenment ideals. However, it also can be interpreted as Goya's commitment to the creative process and the Romantic spirit — the unleashing of imagination, emotions and even nightmares.

I think this is what men of the Enlightenment believed. It is a kind of I'm Enlightened attitude where the enlightened male shows to the enlightened female that he understands when he doesn't have a clue.

BenevolentM -> RE: Sleep of Reason (7/14/2012 11:19:45 AM)

I suspect it was this sort of enlightenment attitude that caused a rebellion against the enlightenment.

No, I think that was more Jesuits.

Politesub53 -> RE: Sleep of Reason (7/14/2012 11:31:46 AM)

Sleep of boredom seems more apt.

BenevolentM -> RE: Sleep of Reason (7/14/2012 11:36:08 AM)

What was interesting about the "The Erosion of Progress by Religions" video was it discussed the Arab enlightenment period. There was a rebellion. Was the objection irrational? I think politics is irrational. I'm an intellectual and those things that came from the enlightenment period are appealing to me, but I do see a dark side to the enlightenment.

Moonhead -> RE: Sleep of Reason (7/14/2012 11:38:32 AM)

I find politics more rational than philosophies which are founded on somebody being scared of the dark.

Please illustrate your point.
