Just threaten it with a rolling pin.  Or a hockey stick.  Which ever seems more scary at the time.

So, Julia, are you going to be sharing the results of this intriquing study with everyone, or are you and Sinergy letting the pasta have its way?

Enquiring minds want to know...

Hmm.  Sassy pasta that is topping from the bottom.  I am not sure I would go for that either.  Fling it at the fridge and make it stick there for punishment as the rest of the good little pastas get to stew in their sauce as their reward.

Personally I think it comes down to if said pasta was 'fresh'  or  not.. I would be inclined to think this would have something to do with it. Was its submissive nature just forming, as a new sub pasta? Or was this non fresh out of the bag bratty pasta that has had prior Dominance experience?

Just my thoughts on this rather boiling situation

My pasta never sticks.
But neither does it fill me up or last very long.

I need aged noodles.

Here's a thought-

Perhaps the pasta isn't TRUE pasta- maybe it's a poser, or a lurker, just waiting in it lecherous place for some small bit of pesto to wander out of place and it will swoop in on it. Poor confused pesto, we'll miss you. IF i were You Sir, i'd have it removed from the premises immediately, pan and all if necessary....call in reinforcements if need be, i think brillo and olive oil are on call tonight.

poor poor pesto

I like to collar rocks, they are obedient and look good standing there naked, displaying all their rocky rockliness in a collar. They are excelent slkaves in the "table" position. Their serves do suck however..

fast reply,

I want to thank everyone for giving me ideas on starting my research into why pasta will not obey my Daddy. I find many good hypothesis on this thread so far, which I will definitely explore when I write this essay. I will report my findings on this thread.

Thanks again to all who have responded, and for those who will respond over the next few days. Know that your answers are leading to some cogent larger theory on why inanimate objects refuse to bow before our Domly people.

As I discovered back in the days when I was a construction worker, there is no such thing as an "inanimate object."  There are merely objects, such as pipes sticking out of walls, which pretend to be inanimate, as long as you're looking at them.  However, when you stop looking at them, they reach out and whack you on the head.

The offending piece of pasta wouldn't come out of the pan because it was holding on.  It would immediately have let go, if you had moved the pan to a position where it could fall and land in the worst possible place.

The only solution I've found to dealing with an ornery "inanimate object" involves the use of a large hammer.

I was cooking Cheese Tortellini with Pesto Al Forno.  Everything was going along fine as I heated up with cream sauce with pesto, added some cheese, and prepared the baking dishes.  As I was attempting to empty the tortellini from the pan into the collander, one of the tortellini refused my Domly instructions to go into said collander.  I was shocked and dismayed.  It failed to compute.

I think you needed to use more lube, preferably the kind that doesn't get sticky and tacky after awhile.  I'm not the kind of chef who is really concerned with how comfortable my pasta is or if it is enjoying being cooked.  Some kinds of cooking honestly work better with a little lubrication and I think you'll find it makes cooking a little smoother and more enjoyable.

Personally, I use a silicone based lube.  Sure, you could use olive oil if you are a purist but olive oil is, well, ordinary.  Some people swear by Crisco, too.  Why bother with something so overused and old with all the miracles of technology we have today?  Also, silicone lubes don't run the risk of weakening latex like petroleum based lubes.  That's an important concern these days if you are not sure where your dish has been previously.

I'm not a fan of having tortellini. I've had less problems with ziti -- ziti tends to be more obedient and less pretentious sounding.  Ziti knows its place.  Ziti doesn't whine about water temperature, taking it to see The English Patient or the other pasta dish with the big fresh, firm tomatoes you played with earlier in the week.

I tried tortellini when I was first starting out but really, after dealing with it trust issues left by a former chef, limits on what sauce you can use, etc. -- you might as well be having spaghetti with slices of white bread.  Throw the misbehaving tortellini outside and let it find someone or some thing who will put up with it or is desperate enough to not care.

Like I said, get some ziti. I've been cooking with ziti since I was too young to mention on here. My ziti knows its place -- and knows it better behave or it won't get any sausage.

I believe there is a question about the type of sausage awaiting in your inbox, Sir.  ;)

Joe, I tried to quote a relevant section of your post but found that the whole damn thing was so clever, and coffee-sputterable, that I just couldn't do it.

Kudos! What a brilliant thesis on pasta-submissology.
