After reading a Wikipedia article on Fred Cherry's public-arena battle with Ed Koch over the issue of prostiution,  I am even MORE in favor of legalizing harlotry for the enjoyment of the masses, and the less fortunate.

I'm not sure if the public is aware that there are folks out there with cerebral palsy, amputated arms, severe facial burns, etc., who can't enjoy the physicality of sexual intercourse because their pitiful conditions prevent them from attaining partners.  I've always been of the mindset that EVERYONE (not just handsome devils like myelf) deserves to feel those rewards of the flesh, even if their handicaps prevent them from landing a girlfriend.  Lack of sex can lead to depression, which is probably one of the reasons that the Catholic church is dealing with so much media attention at the present moment.

When I was nineteen years old, I took a little trip to Rota, Spain, and ended up in a upscale cat-house within two hours of arrival.  You know what deleterious effects have occured from my sleeping with a prostitute?  The answer is NONE.  Let's just legalize prostitution already, and stop busting "Johns", and putting their faces on the local news.  Physical contact is a NEED, and not a WANT.  The handicapped, outcast, and lonely deserve sex, just like the rest of society.

You look okay to me...

No, actually I agree with you. Criminalizing these things is just bullshit intrusion into private matters between consenting adults. By legalizing it and regulating it the activity could become far less risky for all concerned.

That said, I have never been to a prostitute in my life. American chicks are too easy for whores to make any decent money.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who might query that.

I bet you were such a good little boy before that trip.

Just look at you now

The prostitution topics been up more than a few times (usually on the heels of some FemDom rant.)  I'm sure one of our local archivists can provide the juicy links.

Two sides to the coin.  If prostitution is legalized, the state (under current tort law) would incur a financial responsibility and risk.  When there are laws prohibiting an activity, it's more difficult to sue for damages.  On the other hand, just about every other service is taxed and regulated; with the increasing global and local risks of HIV, legalized prostitution is better controlled prostitution.  The money from legalized prostitution could be taxed to help pay for drug rehab centers, instead of helping to line the pockets of pimps and pushers.

Sadly, I don't see any change in prostitution laws coming in the next fifteen years.

Voltare:
Prostitution has been legal in Nevada for quite some time....
To the best of my knowledge there has never been a std come out of a licensed Nevada butt hut. Nor has Nevada been sued for anything related to a licensed butt hut.  The state licenses doctors, barbers and hundreds of other professions and does not incure any lawsuits as a result of that particular practicioners malfeasance why would they in the case of a brothel?
Yup I use them all the time...the reason...they are professionals they are just better at it.

I agree that prostitution laws are not going to change anytime soon, but will point out that the government bonds whiskey and cigarettes then taxes them besides, several times in some states, and makes the lions share of the income from it, but don't help you out with the ticket for a dwi or pay any damages for cancer.  What is a female if not a drug?

The metering is where the problem lies, same as renewable energy.

I'd adore returning to a time in which whores were not only legal but highly respected and venerated spiritual figures of society.  I'd flourish.

In debate class in my Catholic prep seminary, I argued that prostitution should be legalized. Got a decent grade, if I'm remembering rightly.

I'm all for legalization, provided that it doesn't include streetwalking; billboard advertising; or cathouses in close proximity to schools, churches, etc.

I'm with the streetwalking as it supports messing up sidewalk traffic and devalues the entire process.

But in my ideal world, whorehouses would BE as venerated as churches, and there would training schools FOR whores.

Why do you consider something as healthy and useful a social function as prostution something to be kept away from certain things?

I'm gonna toss my hat in with LA about the training schools for whores. If it were legalized, it should be just as valid a career path as any other and training is important to succeed in one's chosen career, right? I see no problem with legalizing it more widely here just as it's legal in Nevada and some places in Europe.

Now I'm tempted to try and find the Kushiel's books for cheap online because LA's thoughts about whorehouses/churches is making me think about the way that world dedicated each typeof whore to a certain god. Of course, they also trained them from a VERY young age, which is a subject I can't bring up here because it's against the ToS.

You should ask yourselves that question as women, since as far as I'm aware, legal prostitution was brought down by organized groups of disgruntled housewives in the old west, who didn't like their husbands having that peticular option available. Were it legalized again now, I suspect a similar movement would seek to topple it yet again.
just sayin'

Prostitution is legal here (Amsterdam) and in the open with many brothels, some of very good repute but it hasn't stopped the probelm of street prostitution which is usually done by down and out drug addicted women. There are men who still use street prostitutes because of the heightened kick of being caught and illicit nature of it. A mayor of Amsterdam was forced to resign for using street prostitutes because it was seen as him exploiting women who had fallen on hard times. If he used prostitutes that were in the brothels he wouldn't have had a problem and hell, he could have afforded a couple a day on his salary. It appears that many of the men that use street prostitutes are affluent. Legal prostitution doesn't solve all problems associated with illegal prostitution but its a better stituation for most women and their clients but you just don't improve things for the women who are addicted to drugs and aren't capable of earning money any other way.

In my opinion a butt hut is a church ...it is where I pay and pray.
In Nevada the butt huts regularly advertise in the local newspaper classified adds for prostitutes....but not for customers.  In the all but the two counties in Nevada where brothels are legal rape is virtually an unknown quantity while in the two counties (Douglas and Clark read Reno and Las Vegas) that do not allow it rape is endemic.

Ok..I can see being against streetwalking as it messes up traffic. I can even see keeping it away from schools as it might encourage truancy. But churches? Have we learned nothing in the last decade? Let's face it, the only difference between a church and a whorehouse is the workers in a whorehouse won't fuck an eight year old who doesn't have any money to spend.

MC -
That is just an amazing story. Contrast that to the Major of Washington DC. He was caught with cocaine and a prostitute (both illegal) and was re-elected by his constituency.

Would you compare the legalization of drugs in Amsterdam similarly? Is there still a market for "street" drugs in Amsterdam? What about the association that is made in the US where "street crime" is linked to prostitution and the illegal drug trade? If there wasn't a dramatic positive effect in Amsterdam with the decriminalization of these "victim-less" crimes it would be contrary to the Libertarian position that decriminalization in the US would have the same impact as the repeal of prohibition regarding criminal activity.

Taking the other side of the argument, the comparison can be made to gambling. Lotteries, casinos, horse tracks, church bingos, make access to gambling pretty easy in the US. Add into the equation on-line gambling sites and you can pretty much legally bet on anything. Yet illegal gambling is still a key money maker for "organized crime" as indicated by frequent and on-going arrests and prosecutions.

There may be a part of the human psyche that requires a sense of "danger" to make the act meaningful. I can think back to my formative years and remember it was much more exciting to go and get a drink at a bar before I was of legal age than it was afterward. Having that in mind, legalization may help many of the people that the OP identifies but it would not "cure" the underlying issues. However, I support decriminalization of all religious morality based laws.

Edited to add:
If lawyers can advertise on billboards and yellow pages why shouldn't hookers? They both fuck you.

Its not only the physically challenged that could/should be legitimately served, those with mental problems that lead to social maladjustment need some fun now and then. Or those with wild way out fantasies.

First to ask how I know that gets their name written down in my little black book !.
