All accurate and true. Been there. What a dump. They dont need a border sign to say when youre entering Slovakia from Czech - you can tell from the state of the place. Who'd have thought that a few miles could make such a difference? And I was in the western end where its prosperous compared to the east.

Theyre a funny lot though the Slovaks. The Czechs are wide open and welcoming, but their former compatriots are the opposite. One gets the feeling that were they more like the Czechs (and Poles, and Hungarians and Slovenians) that they might be more prosperous because they wouldnt be scaring people away!

Thank you for clarifying that most of the wars of the last 2000 years were started by Christians. Most of the bloodbaths were committed by Christians.

Weird, since the majority of the people on the planet are Chinese and have not gone around slaughtering people.

Meatcleaver is, OF COURSE, wrong. Slovakia's economy is thriving as far as eastern block countries are concerned. Slovakia will not trade with the middle east because of their history. If you read their history or go to their country you will know. So...LadyEllen, have you been to Slovakia? I go there every year. Tell me, what do you go? What towns have you been in? You call Slovakia a dump??? The nerve you have.

Meatcleaver: I go to Slovakia yearly and Bratislava is a beautiful town and so is Nitra and Trenchin, and dozens more. Integral to Slovakia's history is fending off agression from the Ottoman Empire. The crest of the castle is Trenchin is the King with his foot on the head of a Turk.

Concerning countries that are having problems with their middle eastern residents, I cite Germany, the Netherlands, France, Spain and Britain. I wish I could say that the problem they have with their residents are greater than the problems we have with our middle eastern residents but the people that perpetrated the 9/11 catastrophe were living in the U.S. at the time.

I have to ask, why did you have the misfortune of being in Slovakia? It is a beautiful country with wonderful people who are extremely gracious. I'm sorry you had such a miserable time.
