ATLANTA - A vegan couple were sentenced Wednesday to life in prison for the death of their malnourished 6-week-old baby boy, who was fed a diet largely consisting of soy milk and apple juice.

Superior Court Judge L.A. McConnell imposed the mandatory sentences on Jade Sanders, 27, and Lamont Thomas, 31. Their son, Crown Shakur, weighed just 3 1/2 pounds when he died of starvation on April 25, 2004.

i certainly have respect for those people who truly live strict vegan and vegetarian lifestyles.  i think it takes a lot of commitment and willpower.  Cases like this tend to shed a bad light on the practices of all the committed parents who raise their children as vegans/vegetarians.  Many do so and do not starve them to death.  It makes me wonder how malnourished the parents were.  Not at all, i would venture to guess.  i can understand them wanting to feed their child a healthy diet but that includes feeding them something besides milk and juice.  There is no way you can convince me they did not know their child was in danger.  Surely he weighed more than 3.5 lbs. when born.  So a 6 week old child LOSING weight is not dangerous?  Please, even i know better than that.  i always shake my head when i read about cases like this.  It's really tragic because they probably did love their child.  It just makes me think they are so caught up in a "healthy lifestyle choice" that they are willing to follow it through even when it becomes unhealthy and begins endangering their child.  What a shame..........slave luci

here is the thing i dont understand.......they make SOY based baby formula.......for kids that are lactose intolerant...and some pediatricians start babies on this formula......sooooooo i dont know how that happend because of soy milk......sounds to me like it needs further investigation......

Soy milk & soy based formula are very different things.

well i understand that......but if they wanted to only feed the baby vegan.......then why not tell the pediatrician they could have used SOY based formula

You're giving these geniuses way too much credit....they weren't bright enough to see that their baby was wasting away, you think they took it to a pediatrician?

According to the article 'they were very young parents who did not know what they were doing'.

Too bad no one noticed that they didn't know what they were doing..

sometimes the justice system works.  hopefully what happens to them behind bars will be much worse than a death sentence.

edited to add:   Nursing wasn't an option?  She didn't know what those giant teets were for?  Oh.. Maybe because mother's milk is by definition an animal by product, it was against veganism.

No pediatrician is even mentioned in that article, the baby was born at home. There is a chance he never saw a doctor until he was already dead.
Ugh what a waste of three lives. It sounds awful but I wish there were a way to prevent total idiots from breeding.

and being 27 and 31 doenst constitute being "young" to me.....there is a condition in babies......normal healthy babies that are fed normal formula or breastmilk that is called "failure to thrive" there are lots of other conditions in newborns that occur too...i am just saying ......an investigation would be in order other than saying this couple sat and did nothing and watched their child die.......

Hmm that doesnt seem young to me either, but then I'm getting old. The child died 3 years ago according to the article so I'm fairly sure that investigations were held.

acutally most vegitarians/vegans do breast feed their babies......they control what goes into the milk by the foods they eat.......as i stated before child endangerment is never acceptable, but working in a pediatricians office for over 8yrs and being exposed to alot of different medical conditions in newborns and children......it just makes me wonder if something else could have been the issue..

*edited* i didnt realize that the death was 3yrs ago.....my apologies im sure there were investigations but with the legal system we have.....who can be sure

Hopefully this might finally cause the people of this nation to wake up and begin incarcerating all of the vegans before they can do more damage to all of humanity....Writing my Congressman as soon as I am done here.
