Once they learn the basics of one language, learning subsequent languages becomes easier. Now it makes rational sense that the second most common language that is spoken here would be the language that would be taught in kindergarten ( I am talking basic lessons that take 15 minutes a day). It would make our kids more competitive in this world and more employable. I do not see it happening in this country because we are so isolationist. Rather sad When did I ever claim I had a problem with mexican culture either? I do wish you would stop putting words in my mouth.

G'morning all: Julia, if you wish to form your opinions or endorse those stated on a site that supports urban legends and/or rumor, so be it. I prefer to form mine based on facts made available through reliable government resources. Dauric makes excellent points regarding the resistance of immigrants to learn our language and the detritus effects this has upon our society. (Tips lid to Dauric) Arpig lives in a country where the existence of dual national languages has made a bureaucratic quagmire of his land. Could not the U.S.A. learn from the examples already cited and strengthen this country by unifying it further under one commonality? It's already in place, we merely need to act positively upon this and make communication simplified by having one land, one language, one people; all it's people. I'm not advocating a loss of culture among a given people but rather that they display a willingness and receptivity to be assimilated into the society in which they have chosen to be part of. If they would rather not, the door opens back to where they originated. Minnetar, as for my earlier definitions, all were taken from Webster's Online Dictionary with the exception of prodominant, which was indeed taken from Wikipedia since no entry was available in Webster's. In reading sites that give the actual bill it does not tell you exactly what the law means, it just gives you the text of the bill. It does not tell you that English is our official language, does it? No it does not. I looked for any site that did say that this was so, I could not find ONE that supported that law as making English our official language. Snopes is a site that dispels urban legends, like the one that you posted about English being established as our official language. Now if you have a site that interprets the bill differently, please share. Now we can sit here and argue about it all day, unless you can find something to support your position that English has been established as our official language then I am at a loss as to why you keep insisting it is... even the bill you posted never uses the term "official language" Have a nice evening

Can i ask a dim question? Why do W/we need to declare any language "official"? As for the Patriot Act; seems to me that making English required speech and prohibiting other languages would take a constitutional amendment.
