Actually, I know QUITE a few mexicans. There are definitely more of them than white people in my neighborhood. When did I ever imply I feared them?

I only worry about things I fear. If I did not fear them I would not worry about them....

quote:

Quite the opposite, but the mexicans I get close to all speak pretty good english, despite them hanging on the their culture, so I don't see what the problem is with all mexicans who come here learning to speak english.

I have Scottish ancestery. My family holds on to its culture by passing down knowledge of our tartan, and stories surrounding our family. We have bagpipes at family reunions. I never have been shamed for holding on to this culture.

Does it bother you when Euro descended Americans hold on to their culture? Or only Mexican descendents?

And as I stated earlier, you do not have to learn anything in this world, no one can force you to learn anything. No one can force you to be literate, or to have math skills, or to have a high school diploma. I do not know who has attempted to cram Spanish down your throat. There are over 100 languages spoken in my son's school district, I am sure that most students could pick a language out of those 100 and learn it as a second language.

I am all for learning multiple languages being compulsory from kindergarten because children acquire language at a younger age easier. Once they learn the basics of one language, learning subsequent languages becomes easier. Now it makes rational sense that the second most common language that is spoken here would be the language that would be taught in kindergarten ( I am talking basic lessons that take 15 minutes a day). It would make our kids more competitive in this world and more employable. I do not see it happening in this country because we are so isolationist. Rather sad

When did I ever claim I had a problem with mexican culture either? I do wish you would stop putting words in my mouth.

The English language has things called "question marks". If you go back to my post I put question marks at the end of questions to you. I was asking if you felt that way, not stating you did.

G'morning all:

Julia, if you wish to form your opinions or endorse those stated on a site that supports urban legends and/or rumor, so be it. I prefer to form mine based on facts made available through reliable government resources.

Dauric makes excellent points regarding the resistance of immigrants to learn our language and the detritus effects this has upon our society. (Tips lid to Dauric) Arpig lives in a country where the existence of dual national languages has made a bureaucratic quagmire of his land.

Could not the U.S.A. learn from the examples already cited and strengthen this country by unifying it further under one commonality? It's already in place, we merely need to act positively upon this and make communication simplified by having one land, one language, one people; all it's people.

I'm not advocating a loss of culture among a given people but rather that they display a willingness and receptivity to be assimilated into the society in which they have chosen to be part of. If they would rather not, the door opens back to where they originated.

Minnetar, as for my earlier definitions, all were taken from Webster's Online Dictionary with the exception of prodominant, which was indeed taken from Wikipedia since no entry was available in Webster's. As for the other links? They are from the Library of Congress. (Tips lid to MBMBN)

In reading sites that give the actual bill it does not tell you exactly what the law means, it just gives you the text of the bill. It does not tell you that English is our official language, does it? No it does not. I looked for any site that did say that this was so, I could not find ONE that supported that law as making English our official language.

Snopes is a site that dispels urban legends, like the one that you posted about English being established as our official language. Now if you have a site that interprets the bill differently, please share. Now we can sit here and argue about it all day, unless you can find something to support your position that English has been established as our official language then I am at a loss as to why you keep insisting it is... even the bill you posted never uses the term "official language"

Have a nice evening

G'morning all:

Julia, if you're going to quibble over semantics - "national" versus "official", then there will never be a meeting of the minds. If you cannot read the factual material presented and form your own conclusions then I'm at a loss as to how you believe those presented on some website. If you want more websites, I'm happy to oblige, even if you can't make sense of what's before your own eyes.

http://www.us-english.org/inc/ Make sure you read the entire site, not just the homepage.

http://www.workings.com/LIA_EOL.htm Gives reasons why it's beneficial to have English as the "official" language.

http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/article548909.ece Even overseas they know it's "official".

Shall I continue? Oy Vey....

And that's where in the historical discussion I siad "From world war two to .... mostly present."

Yes, I'm aware of the Patriot Act, If you -really- want to be depressed there's a Frontline show called "Spying on the Homeland". I have some faint-but-fading hope that the BushyBoy administration has fucked up so badly, when we have a new president, the PA will be allowed to expire.

That said, we still have more freedom of speech than many countries around the world (EG: we can still call our president a dimwitted, self-delusional moron and not have the Secret Service break down the door.)

$0.02,

Dauric.

pinksugarsub -> RE: Should English and Spanish be America's Official languages? (5/16/2007 8:15:42 AM)

Can i ask a dim question?  Why do W/we need to declare any language "official"?  As for the Patriot Act; seems to me that making English required speech and prohibiting other languages would take a constitutional amendment.
