Ok.. I am not a wine snob by any stretch but I would have never imagined that a decent wine could come in box.

But after three glasses tonight, I stand corrected.

minnetar -> RE: Box Wine (5/19/2007 7:45:26 PM)

You don't get into wine...

You drink it.

corsetgirl -> RE: Box Wine (5/19/2007 8:09:02 PM)

Shucks, I like drinking wine and I thought getting into it would be very nice, too! [:D]

You know, price does not always mark a good bottle of wine. I am really into Yellow Tail right now.... those Aussie wines are downright tasty

Tuomas -> RE: Box Wine (5/19/2007 8:59:58 PM)

Box wine, yuck![:-]

I very rarely drink wine, but because of where I'm from, it's kind of mandatory to know about it[:-] Anywhoo, the wine in boxes -or tetrapacks- reacts with the inside plastic polymer on occasion, and can cause a "tacky" taste in the interior. This is why quality bottled wines still use natural corks: the acidity reacts with the plastic.

Of course, if it's a really good wine, you probably won't notice it. However, good wines -"first press"- rarely go into boxes. If you get a good boxed wine, it probably is a fluke, and has to do with the particular harvest blend. However, if I recall correctly, California boxed wine is generic: it's usually a combination of the "leftovers" from different vinyards that didn't make the grade for bottled wine. It's typically packaged in a large company factory, and has no personalisation or follow-up. Therefore, it's more than likely that the same "brand" wine of a different year will probably taste quite differently -and that other "brands" will taste exactly the same, because, well, they are the same.

The Aussies are at the fore front of box wines. I am drinking a aussie box this evening given to me by a chef friend of mine who swears by box wines. She especially likes that they can adapt well in the kitchen because air does not get into them until you need it to.

Except... the French are moving to screw tops in droves, and are also experimenting with boxes even for 750mls. In fact, many wine people I know think French wines will be exclusively screw cap in ten years.

BTW... mybag is mylar, not plastic.

LightHeartedMaam -> RE: Box Wine (5/19/2007 9:10:30 PM)

Yep, give me a box of wine and a couple SlimJims and I'm in hog heaven! :)

French [:'(]. Just because it's french doesn't mean it's good...

I'm not surprized that the industry is switching to more versitle twist tops and boxes. The typical wine consumer is not so demaning in "pedigree" when it comes to their dinner acompaniment. In fact, there is a large portion of the market that actually shuns the traditional model and prefers more "experimental" and "progressive" presentations. So, yes, boxes and twist top bottles are the future. Still, I think it's a long time before we see a Château Margaux in a box [:D]

Mylar (R) is a polyester film made from recombining petroleum-based esters. It's a type of plastic[;)]

Wine is disgusting.  I find it odd that something considered a delicacy is made with the same substance that goes into making my shoes (tannin)!  I'm a spirits guy myself--give me a good bourbon with a little water or soda.  Nice buzz, no hangover [:D]

I have tried REALLY hard to like wine, but i just don't...maybe my taste buds are broken.....

You are not alone. It's just rotten grape juice, anyway.

I do like vinegar, though [:-]

DomKen -> RE: Box Wine (5/19/2007 10:39:22 PM)

Wine can be hard to like. The more complex aged reds in particular. A good young white with appropriate food is a good place to start with learning to enjoy and appreciate wine. Just never ever consume anything that has white before the name of a grape variety especially if the wine is a faint blush color.

As to box wines, I was more than a little skeptical but I've had some very nice import varietals in boxes in the last two years. I'm not a big fan of them for use at the table but for kitchen use they are sublime. pour what you need and close the spout and the wine is still just fine the next time you need it. Which just isn't possible with a bottle.

We may be the last generation to have cork corks in bottles of wine. Screwtops and various non reactive plastic corks will almost certainly supplant real cork in the next 5 to 10 years and I say good riddance. How many good bottles of wine have been ruined by tearing the cork to pieces during opening? Sure eventually you get the hang of it but why should the seemingly simple task of opening a bottle of wine require an otherwise useless skill and special tools? I'd rather concentrate on properly decanting an pouring my wine thank you.
