I don't go anywhere without my little swiss army knife. It's really tiny but has a blade, scissors, toothpick, tweezers, and nail file in it, small enough to toss in a first aid kit, too.  I can't imagine anything worse than being out in the woods and getting something stupid like a hangnail or a sliver and not being able to get it out.  I can't wait to go camping this summer.

Sex toys

And as this might be a little heavy to carry, leave the useless stuff at home.  This includes food, tent, sleeping bag, boyfriend, etc.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding this, but 2 liters of water is lacking if u can't drink from the river? Is there a faucet or something there? Another thing I would suggest brining is a filter bottle, sometimes the water isn't the best and for weak city people like us, stomach problems can be around the corner. Since you will be hiking to the location, watch out for weight such as your two person tent, sleeping bag, and backpack (3 major contributers to weight). Good hiking boots would also be nice, also find extra thick socks to help reduce the blisters. Some cliff bars are also great to munching on and they are lightweight. Also, don't over pack clothes, it's one of the major newbie mistakes.

I see there are several REI stores in the Nashville area. They have camping lists for day hikes, overnite, to extended backpack trips, as well as car camping. They have very knowledgeable people working there, and shouled be glad to explain each and everything on the list. If you purchase there it is a little more expensive than Walmart, but they will refund your money if you are not 100 % satisfied with their products for any reason. If you become a member you get a 10 % dividend at the end of the year for all your purchases. I and many of my friends have been sleeping under the stars for many decades, and none have ever heard of a snake getting in someone's sleeping bag. Enjoy your trip

Why are you sharing a tent with a potentially unpleasant creature?

Leave it home, camping should be fun.

I might have to share the tent with someone. By that long, we might be grouchy.
And the 2ltr is my easy access water, in my hydration pack.  Inwill have others with me.  Its a one night trip, so i dont need more than new underwear anda shirt.
We have a REI person comeing with us, actually. I was considering renting gear, but i actually bought it. I just need someone to show me how to assemble the pack to kep the tent attached.

DV, Kudos to you on your charting this new adventure.

I had fantasies of going camping.  Last year I was to go with a group I had joined and was planning a camping trip that never came to be.  And I sware it had nothing whatsoever to do with my sudden terror based on the movie the "Hills Have Eyes", though that did kind of put a damper on my enthusiasm.  But, anyway, I had told some friends about my plans for going camping; and I wondered why they kept looking at me and saying  "You, camping", and hysterical laughter followed., but now I can see how ridiculous,  with them knowing me, I must have appeared in their minds.  But I was serious as all heck.

I was still hoping some day to go camping, but, now with reading all the suggestions and some of the warnings about certaing things to avoid and look out for, the only way I'll verture out to the woods are if there's a cabin set up with local amenities within a five minute drive.  The funny thing is, I really was planning my trip as if I was going away to an inn, with the occassional trip into the woods, I forgot about all the bugs and snakes and bears oh, my..  And after trying to pitch a, newly purchased, (I guess poorly made,) cabana on the beach with no success, I can't imagine I would have had a tent up in time to get a good nights sleep.  You had to be there for that fiasco.  I hope no one took pictures.

Do let us know how your trip goes.  I wish I had the guts, I'll just have too live this one out vicariously through you if you decide to share.

There is a 2.5 mi hike TO the location and a 4mi hike out on the other end. There wil be about 15 of us all together as far as i know. Its not necessarily remote, I believe its a campground in the middle of the park area, which is accessable from the trails only.
I have OFF backwoods to make sure the ticks stay away, I have a smal first aid kit for my pack, and i know I should go find myself some waterproof matches. I have a GPS (this is a geocaching event... its going to ROCK) and I have a flashlight somewhere. I'll have extra batteries with me, and my camera.

I would have a meeting with these people and seriously plan who was going to carry what. I missed this post earlier. If there are 15 of you, then you ought to know what everyone is bringing, unless it is agreed that everyone brings their own gear.

Everyone brings their own, thats how they always do it. The only sharing can be foodstuffs, or if 2 people are sharing a tent.  Major gear like cooking utensils and such are being handled by the couples who are sharing tents, since one has so much less to carry. There are 3 people defiantely sharing, so they are handling the camp stove and the pots and cookware. We all have to bring our own foods and other gear as we choose to
