Dig a trench around your tent, that helps avoid a wet tent floor.
TOILET PAPER! *biodegradable if you can*
Please, make sure everyone cleans up the site afterwards.
Agreed on pepperspray over a gun *especially if it is a heavy drinking crowd!*
Matches dipped in wax to prevent them from getting wet, just dip the match head into melted candle wax.
TOILET PAPER.
Bandaids for the inevitable blisters.
Relax, have fun... it's camping!
Oh, don't forget the TOILET PAPER lol, yes I have done that.
Make sure you can identify both poison ivy and poison oak before you go.

Status: offline 		A lot of good advice has already been given but as its your first time out..
Make sure you can hike as far as you plan on the trip first by walking that distance in your neighborhood.
Good shoes are a must. The LED flashlights now come in a crank version.. so no need for batteries you just crank it some more ( its also good to store one in your glove compartment)
Forget matches, a disposable lighter in your pocket and a spare in your pack.
The layering of your clothing  ( as suggested a few pages back) is essential. Check the weather before you go. It one thing to be wet but wet and cold really sucks.

Visit a store like EMS or any camping store for the water purification tablets, even though your out for only 1 day , two liters wouldn't be enough water. the pills make the local water safe, not tasty but safe ( Gatorade packets make it more palatable ) Keep this in your pocket zip lock  ( 1/2) and half in your pack.
The whistle is a great idea as well, should you get separated from your group, dint keep pressing on the whistle is heard for a longer distance than shouting.

Most important .. HAVE FUN a one day trip is a great start to camping..

Remember you don't have to out run the bear, just the guy next to you, lol

Status: offline 		I always bring a zip lock bag full of soapy water and paper towels. Another alternative is a zip lock bag full of baby wipes and 1/2 cup of rubbing alcohol.

Don't forget non-drinking water to rinse your plates...unless you bring disposables.

Don't bring food that is too salty, otherwise you'll be drinking up your water too fast and peeing when you don't want to. Oh yes, bring a little shovel to make a toilet.

Zip lock bag of soapy water & paper towles
Hand Shovel
Sweatshirts
Lantern
Mirror (helps for contact wearers)
Bug Spray
Sunscreen

much more, of course, but those are some helpers.

Status: offline 		Hey great pics  I'm so glad you had fun. Bummer about the PI though, are you versed in poison ivy aftercare? If not you may want to look into it, washing sheets etc. Aside from that what other stuff did you do?

Status: offline 		We had a 4 mile hike to the campsite, and we stopped for TONS of geocaches on the way. SuperNate, the cute blonde 19 yr old was pretty much stuck to my side the whole time. Karate stories fascinate him. hehe
We camped overnight at a great clearning, and we took the boats down teh river to dosome looking around.
Next morning we took an 8 mile hike that should have been only 6 but for a slight detour. Even more geocaching on the way out. Thats where we found the poison ivy... we got off the trail and our choices for getting back to it were across the river in waist deep water, or through a small poison ivy patch.  We opted for the ivy (there were snakes on the path we had traveled, and one of them at least was REALLY pissed off at us, he got stepped on, so that wasnt an option. ) And thank goodness I was wearing long pants.  Most of the rest of them were in shorts. We all thanked out intrepid guide many times.

I tend to agree...my ancestors (and yours) spent 10,000 years getting out of the woods and figuring out how to live indoors.  Who am I to dishonor them?
