I just got a jury duty questionaire in the mail today.
Not county level where the courthouse is ten minutes from me....nooooo.
State level. It's either grand or petite. Either way...Trenton is an hour and a half from me, non rush hour. While I actually do look forward to serving if called, I dread the drive.
Anyone serve before?

Not for 20+ years. However, I can offer plenty of suggestions to good Italian restaurants in Trenton. De Fort's is my favorite, although people will always try to talk you into Diamonds. The best steak south of Peter Lugars is Lorenzo's by the train station; only a couple miles, or one mugging away if you walk, from the courthouse. Make sure before heading home for the night to stop by Mott street and pick up an Italian Ice.

And while you are in the neighborhood, can you please stop in and say hi for me to my parents?

Not in Jersey. But I suspect if you're creative, you can get voir-dired out in the first round, and not have to show up the rest of the week.

I did, last year; double homoside. I wrote a few blog about it AFTER it was over {link at the bottom}. It was a life changing event in my life, it made me a much better person, I see the whole legal system in a new light, I apprecaite things more, and understand the frusturation that people go through. Honestly, I would LOVE to serve on a jury again, just not another double homoside, that made me a wreck, ask my friends afterwards, I drank that week, and I mean I DRANK. I'm not a drinker, but, after the verdict, the entire jury, all 12 of us, went to a local resturant where we had been numerious times, and sat in the back away from the press, and talked about things, openly, and drank. The defense attorney and his clerk came up to us and thanked us for our hard work and for our decision.

I still keep in contact with those on my jury, Christmas Cards, lunches, emals and calls. I still go out and put flowers on the spot where the murders took place and cry. It changed me, for the better.

I liked jury duty as well.

The mints, defiantly. We had about 5lbs of those 'star mints' adn 'licorice' at any given moment plus water and sodas in our jury room. We were the BEST fed jury in the count house.

There are those that you can always depend on for jury duty, and we appreciate them in our court.

Aileen, I got the same questionnaire, only mine is for U.S. District Court in Camden! Same here, I'd enjoy serving, but don't want to drive to or in Camden, which is an hour and a half for me. Wouldn't want to if it was five minutes away!

(For those of you not familiar with Camden, for a long time, it was the city in America with the #1 highest crime and murder rate. It's still in the top five....right Merc?

You may have to mortgage your house just to pay for the gas to and from jury duty with the prices these days

In my area it was $15 a day, plus mileage from the furthest point in your zipcode each day that you were sworn in as a juror, plus free parking and watching the faces of those who cannot bring food into the court house pout {only staff and SWORN in jurors are allowed to bring in food}, plus, we had security walk us down {7 stories} after witnesses since some of them were a bit 'creepy.' The county pays for daycare anyways, so since I was on jd, they counted that as 'work.' Ads for lunch, we had some much food in our room, we ate light lunch, we did have it brought up once during the beginning of deliaberations for our own saftey.

Aside from the obvious inconvience I don't understand why folks want so badly to avoid jury duty?

Honesty from a former juror.. it was hard to NOT talk about the case, I went hoem and cried, a LOT. Read my blog and you will understand why, I could not talk to ANYONE about it, and I had to look over my shoulder coz of the stupid media {we were a high profile case}; all in all though, it was worth the inconvience and the tears. I feel GREAT for what I did. I have no regrets.

Those who bitch and complain about jury duty, get over it. If it was not for people my myself and for cjenny, and those who have served, things would be a LOT worse. Serving on jury duty is a PRIVILIDGE, its a RIGHT, its our DUTY just like voting.

Look at it this way, if we didn't have juries, then your fate would be in the hands of 1 person, or worse in other countries, if the judge did not like soemthing about you or your council, you would be screwed, regardless of the evidence. We are lucky.

By memory I think they earned the top spot for per capita crime ten years running. I think there is a movement to exclude them from further consideration and just announce next year the city, "most like Camden".

However reflecting on the 'NJ Food Tour' while in the neighborhood you can stop by Ponzio's Dinner on the Route 70 Cherry Hill Circle.

I was on jury duty for a company I used to work for.

They paid me my normal days wage while I played Bridge and every so often sat in on a jury.

About 4 years after, the company started demanding people give back their $5 a day.

I was quick to point out that the time and effort the company had to spend to take the money in and put
it on the books and account for it was more than the $100 they got from demanding it.

I was told to sit in a corner and not say anything; the Suit Goons had everything under control.

If you have had a negative experience with going through a traumatic trial yourself it might be prejudicial to be on one as you won't be very objective when the evidence is presented. As well as bringing back very painful memories of something you would rather leave behind you and not revisit - even if it is on the other side.

I was on one time. I hope I am never called again. I had looked forward to fulfilling my "civic obligation" and would always sigh when people talked about how boring and stupid it is. Guess what.

Served on one county jury, got the questionaire for Federal jury duty last fall but so far not called for a case. Both are only a few blocks from my house though, not halfway across the state. I consider it my duty, to keep the justice system what it was intended to be by our founding fathers.

If its really too much hardship for you, apply for an exemption. If you don't get it, tell the DA you believe in Jury Nullification (look it up, http://fija.org/ It's your right to decide the law as well as the facts.) You'll be out of the jury pool so fast your head will spin.
