Hi Aileen!

Just wanted to mention that it's possible that stupid people need others looking out for them in the legal system even more than most.
I can't even imagine what it would be like to not have 'normal' intelligence, but yet, want to communicate with others. It must suck.
Anyway, have fun with your jury duty if you get called. No matter what, it should be interesting.

Status: offline 		never served once - the last time i was asked to serve on a jury, i was in the delivery room 15yrs ago.  i had to send in a doctor's note verifying that i was having a baby.

Status: offline 		i just served a couple of months ago, though, i didn't know if it would count as serving until i got the check in the mail...

i was put on a panel, taken upstairs, questioned by one attorney, questioned by the other attorney, then questioned by both  at the same time...

one of them didn't like any of my answers, and because of that, he was trying to sway my opinion using every means he had at his disposal, which also meant he got frustrated just enough to divulge information about the case that we weren't supposed to know...

it was declared a mistrial by the judge, and off and headed towards home we all went.

Daddys, but that can't be, when these people run for political office they all call each other; "brilliant legal "scholors!"
Not "good" or even "sufficient" they use the word "brilliant" and they use it often!
How many times now have we heard Obama called, ..."a brilliant legal scholor?"

I think my answer to this would be.....I'll get there when I get there, traffic's a bitch, sorry. Or, in the case of the Camden duty, I'd ask for pickup. No way in hell am I driving my brand new car to a high crime area that far away from where I live just for jury duty that doesn't even pay an 8th of what I make in my hourly, not salaried, job.

Either that, or I'd make the trek one day, ask rather loudly "We can hand down the death penalty, yes?" "But Sir, this is only a simple theft charge." "I believe in being tough on crime. Soooo death penalty, yes?"

I don't think I'd be asked back.

Those who bitch and complain about jury duty, get over it. If it was not for people my myself and for cjenny, and those who have served, things would be a LOT worse. Serving on jury duty is a PRIVILIDGE, its a RIGHT, its our DUTY just like voting.
Look at it this way, if we didn't have juries, then your fate would be in the hands of 1 person, or worse in other countries, if the judge did not like soemthing about you or your council, you would be screwed, regardless of the evidence. We are lucky.


I read your blog and I still don't get why you cried. Was it because of the facts of the case or because you had another person's life (potentially) in your hands?

I have been called numerous times for jury duty on a local level but so far have not been through the selection process.  You may be sitting in a waiting room with a whole bunch of other people waiting to be called.  I advise a book and/or laptop.  If you have to keep going back, you might want to ask other people in the jury pool about ride sharing.  Wear something comfortable that you can sit in all day on a hard chair and bring some bottled water with you. And it is a damn shame about your vacation time.

Status: offline 		I've gotten notifications in the mail a handful of times, but have never had to show up because I was exempt due to school or because of young UMs who would have been left unsupervised at the time if I were chosen.
 
Honestly, I don't look forward to ever serving on a jury.  Why?  Because too many times, pertinent evidence was witheld from the jury, resulting in wrongful convictions.  If I am on a jury, I feel I should have access to every single bit of evidence and information in order to make a fair judgment.  Peoples' futures are at stake.  How can I live with myself or feel good about doing my civic duty if it turns out that I helped convict an innocent person who was then sent to their death, or lost years from their lives sitting in a cell somewhere.  These are things they can never get back.

Status: offline 		I wonder if you could plead poverty since the jury stipend won't cover the cost of gas? Seriously, I imagine this is going to be a problem for people.

I seem to have been permanently removed from the jury lists because of applying for an exemption over ten years ago. With that said, I won't do grand jury. Grand jury dates from the king's laws and normal protections do not apply to it. Answer one question and you lose the right to plead the fifth amendment later on. It has been said that a good D.A. could convince a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich and I believe it.

Or the worst depending on your point of view.

Status: offline 		my son got released from jury duty today.  he never got picked for a case, and only had to go in monday and today.  the other days he called a number and his "group" didnt have to report those days. 

he hated it-said he was the only person under 50 there and they were lined up for the free coffee like "junkies at a methadone clinic".  it was funny as heck, him having to listen to the conversations about my 25 yo fridge went out and such.  he swears he will go to jail next time and not report, but i told him ill put my foot up his ass if he tries that.

the thing that got me, a case he wasnt chosen for on monday, was a man who had bought a new saleen, and he wanted warranty work done to it.  ford, or saleen, or whoever is the manufacturer, said he had done alterations to the vehicle that voided his warranty.  i would have never thought that belonged in court, much less state court.

anyhow, aileen, id try to get a postponement if i were you.  cant hurt to ask.  and thanks for serving with a good attitude. 

when my kid was whining, i reminded him of the ones that served when my aunt got murdered.  they, like rose, cried as the verdict was read and at times during the trial when it got really graphic.

God bless those jurors and your family.  May you find some measure of comfort in the knowledge that your aunt's killer was held accountable for his/her actions.

If I were on a jury for a murder or some other heinous crime....I'd probably get reprimanded because if I started to swing towards the prosecution, I'd be starring at the defendant and doin' the two-finger "I'm watching you" motion. I'd love the chance to 'pay back' some thug who decided to prey upon an innocent victim.

Status: offline 		Last time, I got called for Jury duty was "FEDERAL" I would have possibly been sequestered, and the court they wanted me to go to was over two hours from my home.

At the time my mother was alive so I sent the judge roughly the following:

Your Honor,

You court is over two hours away from me, I have a 100 year old grandmother and a mother on hospice and your asking me to drive two hours away, run the risk of being sequestered and not able to be near my folks in their time of need

never required me to go
