Because the country is rife with useless social parasites.  They're usually the same people who don't vote then cry and whine when someone gets elected they don't like.  It's even better when they're living on the dole, like a few of our regular posters.

Status: offline 		I'm sorry, Aileen.  Three weeks ago I had jury duty in Monmouth County, but I got bumped off a jury during voir dire and was lucky enough to be set free after just one day.  The drive (only an hour during rush hour) was the worst part, though the boredom was a close second.  Maybe you'll get lucky and be freed after a day, too.

Status: offline 		Jury duty is not awesome on the local (county) level.  I sat on a case that shoulda/coulda been settled out of court.  The parties came in acknowledging the majority of the case.  We were there because they couldn't agree on settlement, as in $5,000 (they kept going back and forth with numbers and were within $5,000 of reaching settlement).  They could not find a way to negotiate $5,000 in a slip/fall sort of case.  Sheesh, what a waste of time.  What I found interesting was that at the conclusion of the case, the judge invited the entire jury into his chamber and asked questions and answered our questions.

I'd like to think I don't have many biases outside of my opinions of stupid people.
It would just be a pain in the ass if it occured over the summer...vacations and wee ones out of school and such. 
Thanks Merc for the tips.  If I'm actually called up I'll have to get more details from you as I've only been in Trenton once in my life.

And Michael...shame on you.  If you ever have the need to go in front of a jury I only hope that they all have the same attitude as you.  They might just come to the conclusion that you're guilty quickly just so they can get on home.

Status: offline 		Yep I have done jury duty a number of years ago.  It was a bit scary to be picked for the jury and we had a couple of days of struggling to come to agreement about the decision we had to make.  Overwhelming relief when what we believed to be the best decision was made.  An eye-opening experience for me.

Status: offline 		I've been summoned several times but have never served.  I do consider it a right and an important civic duty.  However, I worked many years in the law enforcement field and testified as a witness for the prosecution so I tend to have a strong bias in that direction.  I would not be able to be impartial in a criminal proceeding due to my work experiences.

I have never been called (so far) for a civil case.  I most likely could be unbiased in that area....unless it involved medical/nursing issues.

Actually it was not a battleship the USS CAMDEN was a fast combat support ship, AOE-2, the propulsion system from the CAMDEN and the USS SACRAMENTO (AOE-1) were built for the USS KENTUCKY (BB-66), however in1947 the President decided that instead of building the Battleship, he would go with the CNO's plan of devoloping a revolutionary supply ship, the AOE. Before the USS SACRAMENTO (of which I was a proud crewmember, I helped to decomission her after her final tour) was built in1964. a typical UNREP (underway replenishment) or RAS (replenishment at sea) would take up to 3 different supply ships, one for fuel, one for food and general stores, and one for ammo.  The AOE combined all 3 into one, decreasing the time and cost and danger of the UNREPS.

Status: offline 		i vote in every election since turning 18 and have a driver's license however i haven't been called to serve on a jury.  on the other hand, my ex who isn't an American citizen, doesn't vote, but has a driver's license has been called 10 times to serve.

Status: offline 		Blaaahhhhh!!!!!!   I got my jury duty notice in the mail today. 
And of course it has to fall when I have a vacation scheduled so now I have to write a letter explaining the conflict and check the website to see if I can be rescheduled.
Blah blah blah.  What are the friggin odds that it takes over a year from first initial notice to being called and having it fall on a vacation week?

Pretend you know all the sex offenders in the local area so can't possibly have no connection to any possible sex case.

I got out of jury duty once because I was a student and it would have disrupted my programme of study. I also said I couldn't in got conscience serve because my mind wouldn't be on the case.

Aileen, and what was your impression of Trenton the one and only time you were there?
There's a lady who works up at the bar on the corner who moved here from Trenton 17 years ago.

I never get called to jury duty and I'd love to serve on some of those cases I see on t.v.
Oh, and if you want to get out of it just say "HUH" "What???"

I think to a certain extent you can claim expenses, I know in the UK you can claim loss of earnings and that probably also stretches to exceptional travel costs. Not sure about the US system though.
