"U.S. isolates traveler infected with super-TB"

" WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States has placed in isolation a man who may have exposed fellow passengers and crew on two May trans-Atlantic flights to a tuberculosis strain that is extremely hard to treat, officials said on Tuesday.

It was first time the U.S. government has issued such an isolation order since 1963, when it took action against a smallpox patient, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The man, a U.S. citizen from the state of Georgia, is suffering from extensive drug-resistant TB, known as XDR TB, which resists virtually all antibiotics, the CDC said. Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that usually attacks the lungs.

CDC Director Dr. Julie Gerberding said authorities in the United States and other countries were trying to notify passengers who traveled on Air France flight 385, arriving in Paris from Atlanta on May 13, and on Czech Air flight 0104, arriving in Montreal from Prague on May 24."

Years ago peple could not get visas and such unless they were medically cleared. A friend of mine who came from Hong Kong (late 60's) and had to leave their oldest daughter there because she had TB - that story always tore at my heart to think of what that must have done to his mother.  What has changed and why?

He was deliberately trying avoid detection and defied the instructions of the CDC once they finally made contact with him.  He's a rogue and there should be laws against the stunt he pulled.

Chances are he did!
We had TB eradicated in this country 20 years ago.

Whether he did or didn't.....we're most definitely a seeing a disproportionate level of increase in infectious/communicable diseases such as TB, Chagas, leprosy and hepatitis due to the rampant problem involving illegal entry into this country.

Chances are that he did. And we will never know for sure since we no longer screen immigrants for diseases like we used to do. Anyone that wanted to come to America had to go through Ellis Island and be checked for diseases, insanity, and a criminal background. About 2% every year were sent back home and denied entry. Today, we don't do any of these checks.

All these diseases that we thought we were close to eliminating are all suddenly making a comeback just within the past 10-20 years. ie: TB, Mumps, Lupus, etc.. There was even a case of Bubonic Plague in Los Angeles last year.
Sure you might get a spontaneous outbreak here and there of something. But for there to be an increase across the board in illnesses rare in the United States over the past 50 years.....something is bringing this stuff in.

Oh them filthy immigrants!!

You know, Americans travel abroad too, carrying and fetching diseases to and from all manner of places. Proliferation of disease is one of the costs of convenient transportation.

In any case, resistant forms of TB and other diseases are as likely to originate from a nice, clean, western country as anywhere else, perhaps even more likely.

......a couple of points here. First of all the majority of all people in the West are carriers of TB. Not necessaily typhoid marys, but the bacteria is present.
Secondly, the resurgence of a number of diseases is far more likely to be linked to the phenomenon of HIV than any rise in immigration. HIV can lower resistence in individuals, creating a sort of nursery for a number of other diseases, which then get passed on.
Thirdly, the overuse of antibiotics creates antibiotic resistant versions of diseases.

To focus on immigration as a cause of the rise of diseases long thought dead is a gigantic red herring......and a dangerous one. It distracts us from real causes.

Tuomas -> RE: "U.S. isolates traveler infected with super-TB" (5/31/2007 8:32:42 AM)

I'm surprized there are no laws in effect in the US to prevent this man from infecting other people. There is a (rather long) list of diseases here where people are put into quarentine, and any action that leads to infection of another person lands them in jail under criminal charges.

Playing with diseases is no joke. Particularly if this man left the country and went to a "developing" nation that does not have access to proper medical facilities or treatment means.

This country has set up a pretty stringent infection control policy that is vigorously enforced. And with good reason: most of the deadly diseases that have been spread around the world in the last few decades (including SARS and HIV) were precisely carried by westerners traveling without proper infection barriers.

Exactly.

It is kind of interesting how some in here have completely dismissed the idea that immigrants cannot possibly bring in disease. How do you know that they are not? Because we are sure as hell not checking them before they come in.

We will see how much you are willing to protect these people and our country's insane open-border policy when you, your loved one, or your child gets one of these rare diseases that are being brought in. Then opinions may finally change for the better in this country.

Some facts from the CDC:
-Resistant TB was practically non-existant in Virginia until 2002 where it rose 17%
-Washington DC saw an increase in TB by 188%. Public health officials noted the disease was mostly carried by immigrants.
-The Queens, New York, Health Department attributed 81 percent of new TB cases in 2001 to immigrants, with 42 percent of all new TB cases ascribed to the foreign born individuals.
-Chagas Disease, which has no known cure and has always been rare in the United States, has risen by 28% over the past several years. This is a disease that was previously contained to locations in Latin America with poor hygeine.
-Over the past 3 years the United States has over 7,000 new cases of Leprosy.
-Another rare disease in the US, Dengue fever, had an outbreak in Webb county, Texas which borders Mexico.
-An outbreak of Hepatitis in Pittsburgh, PA was linked to Chi-Chi's Restaurant that employed illegal aliens in the kitchen that tested positive for Hepatitis. 3,000 people were infected, 2 died.
-Other diseases rare to the US have suddenly shown increases including Polio, Malaria, and Mumps.

Just because the truth isn't politicialy correct doesn't make it false. Sorry, but Im not willing to put the health of myself or my family on the line because the corporations need cheap labor or the Democratic Party needs cheap votes. My greatgrandparents came through Ellis Island on their way to America. They had to strip, be examined, and cough to prove they were not carrying any disease that may be communicable to the population. There is nothing racial about disease. These bugs do not discriminate. And I don't want them in our population just because you think it is politically incorrect to check these people. And since the advances in diagnosing these diseases has improved since 1920...this should not even be an issue today.

...i don't dismiss that possibility, however i do tend to look at the high probability causes first. In fact it is you who is dismissive by ignoring all the points i made in my previous post in this thread.
Antibiotic resistence for example........

When you have diseases that are rare in the US and plentiful in Latin America, and over the past decade we have seen a rapid increase in these diseases in the US, and we have seen a flood of illegal immigrants into the US from Latin America....you can make a safe assumption where the diseases are coming from. We are not talking about a single disease either. TB is just one of them.

......an assumption maybe, but not necessarily a safe one. TB is, as i posted earlier and you ignored, present in most of the western world. In order for your assumption to be correct you have to prove that immigration is a bigger contributing factor than antibiotic resistence and the effects of HIV. As you merely ignore these factors your assumptions are far from 'safe'.

popeye1250 -> RE: "U.S. isolates traveler infected with super-TB" (5/31/2007 10:09:54 AM)

And if there's 2 million people from third world countries sneaking accross that Mexican border every year that's 2 million that of course aren't being chcked for diseases!
And that's 2 million potential disease vectors.
By not properly securing that border our government is directly threatening the public health of American Citizens!
This kind of gives you an idea of how much influence big business has over our government when things like this are allowed to happen.
It's kind of funny in a way because Liberals have been pushed into a position of defending and agreeing with Bush's & Big Businesses's policies!
Who ever thought that Moveon.org would agree with Bush's immigration policies? lol
Not a good position to be in and forced to defend Republican policies! ha, ha!
Hmm, maybe that would make a good thread.

The CDC is very, very good at figuring out where a disease originated from. They have directly traced many outbreaks of Hepatitis, TB, and other diseases to illegal immigrants working in the food or food-packaging industry...not to HIV patients.

DomKen -> RE: "U.S. isolates traveler infected with super-TB" (5/31/2007 10:12:04 AM)

Not to try and derail the nice "immigrants are diseased" thread but...

The idiot in question had recently traveled in Asia fund raising for hospitals in that area. Unsurprisingly XDR TB is primarily found in Asia. I'm willing to bet that is where he caught it.
http://www.ajc.com/health/content/health/stories/2007/05/29/0530meshtb.html?imw=Y

The article also point out that the total number of TB infections per year in the US continues to fall despite the immigrants and the overall increase population but far be it from me to interject facts into your paranoia.
