At the end of the day aren't we all looking for the same thing? A friend, companion, lover, soulmate and a master or slave?

It's  about the love...at least for me.

No.  Not really.  Many of us are looking for something very different from what others are looking for.

These are all very different things, although, sometimes you can find someone who is more than one of these for you.  Sometimes, though, some people are lucky to find even one of them.

That's great but, it's not about love for everyone.  Love is nice but, sometimes it can be a pain in the butt or be frustrating or hurtful or leave you feeling like something is missing.  i have been loved by some very nice men and yet, i felt an immense ache of emptiness inside of me because love wasn't what i needed.  Being a fully-owned slave to someone i could truly look up to and devote myself to was what i needed.  And, being owned by my Master is what i truly love.  So, i guess you are right, after all.  It is about love, in a way.

Oh my dear Joy,

Love comes in all different forms...our brand of love just has a different face, albeit a dark one, that's all!

I found this rant to be insightful and refreshing.  More often than not, the rants I've seen are posted in the heat of the moment, and while they are passionate, they lack thoughtfulness, (and sometimes) common sense.  Even if you don't agree with the content, you have to acknowledge the sincerity and tone of the rant, itself.  (Oh, by the by, the rants I'm referencing were on another site).  LOL

It's one of the great top ten debates in ds though :)

Now, there's a thread topic....

I liked the rant!  I am a parent, so I fulfill the role of a parent.  That parent role isn't going to end until me or kid dies, and that makes it significantly different than a role that isn't going to outlast the decade.  I would guess that includes the vast majority of current relationships on this board held by those objecting to the idea that they are playing a role.

quote:

A slave is not REALLY a slave. They are a person who has chosen to play the role of a slave.

It is illegal to own slave; a person could not willingly become a slave in a free nation.  All this stuff about "ownership" and "property" is fantasy because the truth is:  You don't have the right to "give" or "sell" your own being (military service is exempt [;)]).  I know many slaves are all into the "I have no rights" stuff, so this should please them:  You REALLY do not have the *right* to be a slave in any real sense of the words "right" or "slave."  The rest is fantasy, no matter how seriously you take it or feel it or whatever.

And not everything that anyone gets off on can be numbered as a sexual orientation.  I don't consider submissiveness to be a sexual orientation.

As far as the roles we play - that is what they are:  Roles.  I am human.  I am female.  I have likes and dislikes.  All else are roles I either choose or do not choose.

Nice rant overall, what a rant should be really.

But I'm not sure why the insistence that it's role play?  Vanillas don't role play when they work together to decide who will be incharge of what or share authority.  And masters and slaves don't role play when they decide one will have authority and the other won't.

Role play is great fun, hot, delicious and more- but that doesn't mean who we are in a relationship is role play.

It's one of the great top ten debates in ds though :)

I believe that is exactly what he is claming.  Saying that his wife plays breadwinner and he plays homemaker as an example.  And it does make the mundanity of vanilla life look much more exciting if you can view it as roleplaying.

The play's the thing.

Damn it! I was just going to post that!! It is all true, while we seem to be playing roles in all aspects of our lives, most of us are hard-wired to behave a certain way; nothing we can do will change that. And the role we choose to play, might be a matter of degree.

The pleasure slave is not mutually exclusive of the accountant from Detroit.

cjan -> RE: It's all just roleplaying (a rant) (3/8/2008 6:46:24 PM)

The problem arrises when we identify with being this or that. It seems to me we are constellations of thoughts, feelings, sensations, opinions, etc,, in short, everything we experience. But are we really any of those things, or their conglomorate ? I don't think so, because it is all constantly changing. Sit quietly and watch sometime.

In the end, it's only rock and role, but I like it...

A lot of interesting points of view here, thanks for the topic.
