Just take a look at this website: http://www.keepsaketrends.com/designers/designers.htm It's a mini biopage of designers for a crafts store in Arizona. You know what struck me? The names of these women's kids are out of control. The first one has four kids, Zach, Justin, Tyler, and Emma. Very popular names right now, and not my favorites, but at least they're normal. The third one has two kids, Donovan and Morgan. Puke. Sounds like the starting backcourt for the St. John's University basketball team. The seventh hs two kids, Easton and Paisley. What the FUCK? One is a town, the other a design for a necktie. The eighth has two kids, Savanna and Autumn. Oh, yay, a douche commercial. (I'm old enough to remember douche commercials.) The ninth has three kids, Makenzie, Carson, and Brayden. Guess what, I don't like those either. Sounds like a law firm. The tenth has three kids, Eliza, Libby, and Ellie. Hallelujah, some halfway normal-sounding names. The twelfth has a daughter named Tayla. Tayla, the fierce 22nd level Dungeons & Dragons ranger. The sixteenth (and last one) has two kids, Kyler and Kendra. Kyler??? KYLER? "Pardon me, sir, could you spell that?" I'm sure there's something significant to be said about the ongoing craze for asinine "individualistic" names, but I don't have anything significant to say other than that these kids are going to ask what the HELL their parents were thinking when they grow up.

There is a craze in kids names that has its roots in the South... naming ones kid after a family name on the mother's side.. for example Madison, Brook, or Halley. It does not work for all names.... like I have never seen a girl named Miller for example. The problem with the yuppie people who name their daughter Madison is that Madison was usually not the mother's maiden name, they just copied the name without knowing the tradition behind it.

Eliza Libby and Ellie are all nicknames for Elizabeth, wonder if she got the idea from George Foreman...

I have heard folks around my neck of the woods calling their kids and wondered why they named them that way. There seem to be a lot of (to steal a term from Morris Day) "isha babies" around. Keisha, Aisha, Ronisha, Lyeisha; I encountered one named Dadasha, and her friend Nakita. I was starting to wonder if the parents just choose a random word and add "isha" "asha" or "ita" to it.

Oh I don't know...I kinda like Orangetta, Krystal or better yet 'Trinket.' "Hey...isn't that Hortense over there...?" naaw, she looks pretty relaxed to me. (I actually worked with a woman named Hortense...a German, not surprisingly)

I was shopping in Peddlers Village and saw personalized mugs and such for kids. So I go to buy one for each of my wee ones who have normal, older names. They had Elizabeth, but didn't have Madeline. They did have Morgan and Mackenzie though. It pissed me off. Those are last names, not first. So, couldn't get any since any parent knows you can't buy for one and not the other. Ugh. I run into that all the time. Some normal names are completely obsolete these days.

And the weird spellings for common names. A co worker just had a little girl a few months ago. She told us the baby's name was Katie. Cool, right? It's spelled Cadye. Wtf? Creativity is fine but spelling your name via 'net speak phonetics is silly.

Try finding about anything with the name Alana on it. And my little brother is Mathew. One T, which just fucks things all up. In my class at school, gotta love it were the folowing: Lord Aki (that was his given name), Diamond, Chestnut, Sara, Quanstine, Rebekkah, Toby, Antonio and Fukmi (said exactly sa its spelled.) Teaching was great, but try keeping a straight face calling role in that class.! DV

I'm on a group of work at home/stay at home moms and many of their children have these new off the wall names. Talia and Tayla are very popular. My owner was reading me a list of names from his university students and they are off-the-wall too. Just add "isha" and "ita" on the end of anything and you have a name.

The fashion for stupid first names stems from a general degradation in cultural standards; some children out there sport the names 'Chanel' and 'Gucci'. And they're not even getting paid (though I fear the time will come)! In France, the local authority's official whose job it is to record birth certificates may act to prevent parents from giving the children names that may cause them harm, such as bizarre or obscene ones, although this definition isn't exhaustive (they refer the case to a local judge). Of course, in the USA, this would be unthinkable... You would think people would be able to self-regulate their bizarre desires to call their sprogs something weird, but obviously ignorance prevails... Tough shit on the kids in question but I'm sure they'll get over it [:D]

When I was in grade school during the 1950's we had names like; Peter, Tommy, David, Paul, Donald, Jimmy, John, Fred, Mike, Bobby, Stephen, Mark. The girls had names like; Elizebeth, Marsha, Sharon, Shirly, Linda, Diane, Kathy, Lisa, Mary, Virginia, Amy. It was mostly kids of Irish, Swedish, German and Italian parents and in those days they wanted to get away from the old ethnic names like Sean, Liam, Nunzio, Vinny, etc. So if you have a son Tommy is a good name and for girls I always liked Diane.

I had to laugh a bit when I saw and started reading this thread. My daughter's name is Piper..would I call it unusual? Absolutely. I don't think it's stupid, but, I'm the one who chose the name, so..lol. The reason I chose an unusual name is in part because I have a fairly common one, Amanda. When I was growing up, I always knew at least one other person with the name, and sometimes more. It didn't bother me at the time, and doesn't particularly now, though I do occasionally feel foolish when I hear someone say it at a store, turn around, and realize it's someone calling their 5 yr old daughter -laughs-, but... I do want her to have "her own" name. There are other Pipers out there, but not one around every corner. Will she be teased about it? Probably. Will it kill her? No, and I don't understand why there seems to be a need these days to protect children from every form of adversity. My hope is that when she gets older she'll appreciate it. Besides, if nothing else, wouldn't it be nice to be able to remember everyone's name? Very few that have met her, even once, seem to forget her name..just my thoughts.. -a

I just wonder that these people who give their children outlandish names do not seem to have the least bit of consideration for the child who actually has to bare the name. I like expressing creativity myself, but making up a word or adopting a bizarre one as a name for my child...just not a good thing in my eyes. My middle son went to high school with a young lady named Tequila. (edited to add...i shit you not)

I grew up with a girl named **** Piper i thought she had the most awesome name. I've also heard it used as a first name before.... Sorry, i just realized that i probably shouldn't have posted the girls name.

I have a friend who is an ex Detroit cop. He swears he met, in the course of his duties, a family who had several kids. One of the daughters names was pronounced 'Shy'theed'...spelled Shi'thead.
