Luci, you don't need a degree to be a NYC cop. Trust me on that!
My first name is "Thomas", in Greek it means; "Come and GET SOME, M.....r F.....r!"
Really, I looked it up!
I like some of the Irish names for girls; Dierdre, Aoife (pronounced "EE- Fah") Mairead, Shannon, Bridget etc.

I went easy on the poor boy, and named my offspring John Aiden.  He goes by Aiden, because the alternative was to be the twelfth John in my husband and I's combined families.  And I hate the name Brayden, by the way.  Aiden has a second cousin the same age with that name, but I can one up it.  They spelled it Breidyn.  *shudder*

We just added a "Braeden" to the family.  I like that spelling the best.  "Brayden" looks like a name for a donkey, lol.

velvetears -> RE: stupid first names (6/5/2007 4:31:43 PM)

Quasi, Zyari, Tenisha, Tequita, Kasheena, Anfoni, Aiesha - just a few i have run into [sm=smile.gif]

i always loved my name - it was not popular when i was growing up so it was considered an unusual name back then. It's not terribly popular now but you do see it around more.  Both my girls have unpopular names - i didn't want them to be another Elizabeth, Christine, Amanda etc....

Viridana -> RE: stupid first names (6/5/2007 4:42:37 PM)

There's a trend right now here in my country to give children cute cuddly names. Which is alright in some sense, but I get the feeling that the parents are forgetting that the kids wont be cute and cuddly forever and one day (hopefully) they'll  end up really old in a nursing home. As much as I can connect cuddly cute names to infants, I sooo can't connect them with old wrinkled senior citizens. I'm not saying everybody should name their kids John and Mary. But I really think people should think twice and find some middle way in name giving.

I knew a woman whose name was Lavoris.  Yup, her parents named her after mouthwash.  Isn't that special?

Just take a look at this website:

http://www.keepsaketrends.com/designers/designers.htm

It's a mini biopage of designers for a crafts store in Arizona.  You know what struck me?  The names of these women's kids are out of control.

The first one has four kids, Zach, Justin, Tyler, and Emma.  Very popular names right now, and not my favorites, but at least they're normal.

The third one has two kids, Donovan and Morgan.  Puke.  Sounds like the starting backcourt for the St. John's University basketball team.

The seventh hs two kids, Easton and Paisley.  What the FUCK?  One is a town, the other a design for a necktie.

The eighth has two kids, Savanna and Autumn.  Oh, yay, a douche commercial.  (I'm old enough to remember douche commercials.)

The ninth has three kids, Makenzie, Carson, and Brayden.  Guess what, I don't like those either.  Sounds like a law firm.

The tenth has three kids, Eliza, Libby, and Ellie.  Hallelujah, some halfway normal-sounding names.

The twelfth has a daughter named Tayla.  Tayla, the fierce 22nd level Dungeons & Dragons ranger.

The sixteenth (and last one) has two kids, Kyler and Kendra.  Kyler???  KYLER?  "Pardon me, sir, could you spell that?"

I'm sure there's something significant to be said about the ongoing craze for asinine "individualistic" names, but I don't have anything significant to say other than that these kids are going to ask what the HELL their parents were thinking when they grow up.

you're awfully judgemental.

my name is aviva. i'm named for my grandfather. it's a terribly common name in israel, just not here. but i'm sure you'd just call it stupid.

Living on the coast in California means I know a whole bunch of people who are hippies
or children of hippies - Rainbow, Summer, River, Coral, Harmony, Forrest, Snow, Sunshine, etc.

swtnsparkling -> RE: stupid first names (6/6/2007 3:05:15 AM)

Sometimes my mind just wanders onto the strangest things (actualy I rather enjoy it)
names pop in to my head for no known reason. I think...................
what are people thinking of when they come up with names?
the dumbest names ever I swear are given by the celebs. (I wish I could recall some now- but I havent had enough coffee yet)

I have a normal name - yet I have very very rarely see it used TV/Movie/Books and only met  4 others  with the same name.

aSlavesLife -> RE: stupid first names (6/6/2007 5:33:50 AM)

I know a couple that named their daughter Travesti and their son Jathen. Small wonder that Jathen speaks with a lisp.

tulipgoose -> RE: stupid first names (6/6/2007 6:04:05 AM)

My ex's mother's name was Ursula...... she really was an old sea witch! :-P Not the nice normal pagan variety, the ugly bitchy crazy non-pagan kind! At least her name fit!

I once heard of a woman named Iamapig (uncertain if if was in several words or all in one, but it was her birth - given name).

Someday I am going to have a lil girl and name her Dani Piper (Dani first name and Piper middle)...... It just sounds nice to me. I have a few other "different" names for children, but.... they're all mine muahahahaha

If I weren't adopted my name would have been Gwendolyn.... Ah well.......

I was shopping in Peddlers Village and saw personalized mugs and such for kids.  So I go to buy one for each of my wee ones who have normal, older names.  They had Elizabeth, but didn't have Madeline.  They did have Morgan and Mackenzie though.  It pissed me off.   Those are last names, not first.  So, couldn't get any since any parent knows you can't buy for one and not the other.  Ugh.  I run into that all the time.  Some normal names are completely obsolete these days.

Morgan has been used as a first name in the past. "King Arther" Plus it's an old english/celtic name. Not that I personally like this name.

*nod* I was pretty sure it was a traditional name.

AquaticSub -> RE: stupid first names (6/6/2007 6:18:08 AM)

I like unusual names - as a kid I was wished I was named Amethyst and I may still name a daughter that. Except I'm not fond of "Amy" for some reason and that's what her nickname would probably be. Since I've got one of the oldest and most common Celtic names in the world and I still can't find personalized stuff with my name on it, I'm not really concerned about my future podlings having pencils with their names on them.

...and there's the well known firm of undertakers:  Stabbem and Slabbem.........
