Status: offline 		i guess i am guilty... when i named all five of my children.. at the time each were born.. i tried choosing original sounding names.. so there wouldnt be a hundred other kids around with the same name... and for the most part.. i think i suceeded.

Ashlynn: my oldest is now 18.. and we have only ever heard of a few other Ashlynns, though they have all been much younger. i had wanted to name her Ashley.. but it simply didnt fit with our last name. So i dropped the "ley"..and used my middlename instead. I like it.. and apparently..others do as well.

Alyssa. is now 15.. i had THOUGHT it was original and unused.. but around and a lil after she was born, seems lots of people were liking the same name..so yeah.. a bunch of Alyssas around.

Alaynie... is now 9.. and her name is the most unique one we ever came up with.. Dont think there is another Alaynie in the world..lol   Sometime after i named her , i began having doubts, sure a cute name for a wee lil baby, but how will it work for an adult? Id wished i had given her the more adult form of Alaine, and simply called her Alaynie as a nickname.. but she can shorten it herself as an adult, if she so chooses.

Acayla is now 6.. and while there are many similar sounding names being used around, i have yet to hear of anyone using her name. i had found it in an online baby name list (yeah..by female baby number 4, i WAS having difficulties coming up with names i liked that started with an "A"lol).. but didnt like the original spelling "Akayla" so yeah.. i changed it..

Aiden is now 4.. and wow.. so many people in my husbands family HATED it.. But i tend to think it was simply because they were all angry when i declined their wishes that i use his grandfathers name. Sure.. Ashlynn, Alyssa, Alaynie,Acayla, and JIM???..no thanks.. yick.
anyways.. i had thought his name was unique.. until i heard of a lil girl with the same name... which i DO think is weird.Seems way to much a Boys name to me. And recently, i found a top ten list of baby name choices, and sure enough, there was Aiden right near the top of this list.
oh well.lol

There will always be people that wont like my name choices for my children, and those that will love my choices.. i tend to think that names go in cycles.. i just happen to be in a group of people that are right now, naming their children unique, original names. Why? maybe because we all grew up with children that all shared the same first names, and watched the frustration of one "Ann" or one "John" go through, when they would hear their names being called, only to have at least one other child answer with the same name..And that the only distinction one had from another, was their last names.

Someday these children will all grow up and have children to name themselves, and i am willing to bet, that many many will be naming them names that i will hate. "Jill? WHY?? theres so many babies being named Jill!"  "Why are these young parents naming their children such old fashioned sounding names?" lol.. so see? it will all cycle back around.

i had tried making my name choices unique, but not totally out there, it was my right to do so. Children with unique names will not be ridiculed with peers teasing, simply because nearly all of their peers will have unique names as well.Even so, if ever any of my children DO have problems or issues with thier given names, they always have their middlenames to fall back on and use, if they want. (Renee, Nicole, Marissa,Megan, Jeffery)

I have a friend who lives in Alaska; her and her husband have 7 children, all with pretty normal  names except for the only girl. Her daughter's name is Macy. ( Personally, I think many of the names you listed are quite nice )

Status: offline 		well now i know why we in germany have authorities who have to allow the childs names.
But honstly: which parents can be so cruel and let her daughter grow up named "Fukmi"?
But sometimes we have the same here with combinations of given names and surnames, which will give a bad sense.
i can give you no example unfortunately, because most will not work in english.

Status: offline 		I rather enjoy unusual names....It seperates you from the masses....When I was but a Domiboy whenever I heard my name I knew that I was being spoken about...It gave me a chance to look around to see if it was time to stick around or get the fuck out of Dodge.

Then of course there is the joke about the young Indian boy who approached his father, the Chief, with this question......

"Father, how did you come to name  my sisters as well as myself," asked the young boy.

The Chief paused and looked down at his young son and said, "On the day of the birth of all of my children, when I would step outside the teepee  the first thing that I saw became their name...That is why your eldest sister is called Running Doe, and your other sister is named Flowing Creek.....But please tell me why you ask such a question, Two Dogs Fucking?

My middle name is Lorraine, and if I had ever had a daughter I was going to name her Lorraine May (May being my mom's middle name), and then shorten it to Rainee as a nickname... I have an online friend who is a Lorraine and everyone calls her Rainee...

It's a little outdated but still... if you go down the list and check out the less popular given names, you'll find some real gems.


There are some pretty wild ones listed there... and I'm surprised to see girls given traditional males names such as Charles and Richard.

My first name (Leslie) makes the top 200 on that list, but I've not met too many people with the same name.  Still, it's common enough to rank in between "classics" like Debbie and Joanne.

My last name, however, more than makes up for any lack of originality.  Girls with the name Richard rank higher percentage-wise than people bearing my last name.

Status: offline 		A number of years ago I saw an article and picture in the local paper about a family that had given their three kids unusual names.  The oldest son was Douglas Fir, the youngest son was Jack Pine, and the daughter was Mary Christmas...and of course the family last name was Trees.

I've yet to hear any names as "unusual" as these: Moon Unit and Dweezil - Frank Zappa's kids.

Status: offline 		How about Fyre Blaize. Yep, that's what my friend named her daughter. She wanted to name her Blaizing Fyre, but thankfully everyone ganged up on her and made her realize what she would be doing to the little girl.

my favorite come back as i got older was."I cum in assorted flavors".....LOL i crack myself up....

Status: offline 		I always wanted an unusual name. My parents gave me the name Sarah. I like the meaning of it, Once you get beyond the bibical referrence. (look it up in Robert Graves The White Goddess.) But given that I have 3 cousins with my name and quite a few classmates, got a wee bit annoying. So I alot of times I introduce myself as Sarina.  I am all for coming up with unusual names, (I want to name my daughter when I have one, Asaia Carol "Ozya") But I have to agree that parents need to think it out.  Once met a girl named Latrina. sounds pretty til you remember another word for bathroom. lol.  Something else though is about littleones and teasing about names: little ones will tease other littleones, fact of life.  If they can't find something, they will make it up.

Status: offline 		I think you're being a little harsh, LaM.  There are much worse names out there.  Take Shannon Sosseman's daughter, Audio Science.  Or, perhaps, Penn from Penn and Teller's daughter, Moxie Crimefighter.  Or Jason Lee's son, Pilot Inspector.  I couldn't make this up if I wanted to... it's why I'm not a professional sci-fi writer.

On a slightly more normal note, there's Gwyneth Paltrow's daughter, Apple.  Had her first name been Fuji or Granny Smith she'd be on the first list.  There's also the sadistic parents with the last name of Leer, that named a girl I met Crystal Chanda.  Yeah.  Crystal Chanda Leer.  Those bastards.  And there's also a family member's neighbor, Harry Boner.

I went easy on the poor boy, and named my offspring John Aiden.  He goes by Aiden, because the alternative was to be the twelfth John in my husband and I's combined families.  And I hate the name Brayden, by the way.  Aiden has a second cousin the same age with that name, but I can one up it.  They spelled it Breidyn.  *shudder*

Edited to add:  I'm Marilyn Michelle.  Very normal.  However, I have this theory that the more normal a name you have the more you will try to stand out in other ways.  And the more abnormal the name, the more you'll try to fit in.  Of course, someone always comes along and blows that theory out of the water.

Edited to add, after sleeping on this thread: Of course people are free to name their kids whatever they want, and the kids are free to change their names when they become adults.  That wasn't my point.  Last night I was too tired to explain what bothers me about these names.  It's that they're NOT original.  I kinda like Moon Unit and Dweezil, for example.  OK, they're fucking weird, but at least someone spent some time thinking about them, and you are NEVER going to find two guys named Dweezil.  But Kendra?  Hunter?  Those are names that might SEEM original--till you realize that pretty much everyone in America is naming their kids Kendra and Hunter these days.  It's like fitting in by pretending that you're standing out.  There's something creepy about that.

Status: offline 		I went to school with a little hippie girl named "Lovechild."  I always thought that was so pretty but, when I look back on it, I'm sure she was the brunt of many cruel remarks.  I also know girls named September and Tiwanna.  The explosion of girls being named Madison seemed to happen about the time girls my age began having babies.  I've always held the theory that these baby's mothers - like me - watched the movie "Splash" as a grade schooler and loved the unusual name picked out for the mermaid in it - "Madison."  I grew up remembering that and thinking it was pretty as did, apparently, 75% of the rest of girls my age...lol....so now every other girl child born is named the (no longer unusual) name "Madison." 
 
One of my favorite books "Freakonomics" by Steven Levitt has a great chapter in it about the names parents choose to saddle their kids with.  One couple in 1958 NYC named one son "Winner" and then - 3 years later - another son "Loser."  Loser went on to graduate from college and become a sergeant with the NYPD.  Winner has been arrested nearly three dozen times.  Levitt writes that the father clearly "had the right idea - that naming is destiny - but he must have gotten the boys mixed up."
 
He also writes about children named "Temptress" (a botched attempt to name her "Tempestt" after the girl who was on "The Cosby Show") and Amcher (from a sign for Albany Medical Center Hospital Emergency Room - the first thing the parents saw upon arriving at the hospital).  He tells also of a child named "Shithead" - pronounced "shuh-TEED" and the twin boys named OrangeJello and LemonJello (pronounced "a-RON-zhello" and "le-MON-zhello," respectively). 
 
It's a fascinating chapter, with comprehensive lists of the 20 most popular girls and boys name (considered "whitest" and "blackest").  There are also lists of what parents name their children based on their education and income levels.  He ponders the point of whether or not such "unique" names can hinder someone on job applications, etc.  Very interesting read..............slave luci
