Well Asthma is one of weirdest names I've ever heard.

OH that's just silly.  However I have it on excellent authority that Teddy Kennedy's PR advisors are named Winer, Diner, Dicker and Dunker.

When I was in the ambulance otw to the hospital to give birth to my daughter, the nurse doing the ride along asked me about names, granted the one I chose was normal, Megan, but we got to laughing about the woman she'd ridden along with the previous day, because her son was going to be named Shamu, yes folks, the same name as the killer whale. Gawds....

I know I've posted this before, but hey.  I have run large medical facilities, and our medical records people used to circulate "funny names" (this was pre-HIPAA, so don't bust my chops, Jack!).

favorites included:   Ima Hogg.  Ima Bear.  Lexus (I guess her younger sister - born when the family was doing better, was Mercedes?)   Mary Christmas Tree, and her brothers Jack Pine and Douglas Fir  (I am NOT making that up).   Lots of Georgias, Virginias, Floridas, Texases, Nevadas but not one New Jersey.   Daffodils, Daisys, Roses, Pansys and Sunflowers.  Triffid (I dunno, Dad loves science fiction?)

But my favorite was the name that came on the birth certificate, preprinted.  This was a 67 year old woman, we'll call her Ms. Jones.  And her mother so loved the exotic name that the birth registrar gave the baby that she kept it.  My favorite patient:

Female Jones.  Pronounced feh-MAL-ley.

My best friend, years ago when I met him, had an Irish Setter pup named Sarah.  He said he named her after a former girlfriend from college who had the same color hair.  The dog went everywhere with him.

Years later, when the dog was getting very old, he had a daughter, who he also named Sarah, partly because she too had red hair.  It was a bit confusing for a few years, to have both the dog and daughter around answering to the same name.  And of course the assumption was made by nearly everyone that the daughter was named after the dog.

Ima Hogg was the daughter of Big Jim Hogg who was governor of Texas from 1890-98.  Her full name was Imogene, but since she was a child she was called Ima and it stuck.   She became quite a philanthropist later in life.  The standing joke was that she had a sister named Ura, which she did not.

You are thinking of

Dewie, Screwum, and Howe.  Esq.

I'm sure it had an earlier source, but for many years the NPR show Car Guys  has mentioned the law firm that represents the show, on the air, as Dewey, Cheatham, and Howe.

I named my youngest Shayla it's Gaelic and means priestess of light.  After she was about 4 months old someone told me "ohhh you named her that because of Sex and the City" I was soooo confused, I'd never see the show.  Apparently some chick on the show wanted to name a baby that...go figure.

My husband did research on that name to stay true to our heritage and find something that had meaning for us...now people just think we like hour long comedy-dramas about chicks and shoes.

A friend who taught school in Chicago said there were many odd names among the mostly poor and black children in her classes.  But the oddest was a girl named Formica Dinette.

Gonnorhea (gun-OR-ea)
Deckonti (deck-un-ti) - my best friend
Mahronjweah (maya-no-ay) - my best friend's sister
Alize (like the alcohol)
Chandelier (yes, just like the light fixture)
Vaseline (vaz-lynn)

Roxanne....is by far the simplest, but most annoying name to have. It may be simple, but you would not believe how many people can't spell that.

Hm, I have some problems with that site.  The phone numbers they generate randomly are often real and unpublished.  (Yeah, I just checked a few of them.)  I'm not so sure that's legal.

Working in a court, we get to see all sorts of names; one from yesterday's jail records: Orenthal James Simpson. Poor bastard was born in 1975, I think, at the height of the butcher's popularity.

I have heard folks around my neck of the woods calling their kids and wondered why they named them that way.  There seem to be a lot of (to steal a term from Morris Day) "isha babies" around.  Keisha, Aisha, Ronisha, Lyeisha; I encountered one named Dadasha, and her friend Nakita.  I was starting to wonder if the parents just choose a random word and add "isha" "asha" or "ita" to it.

Yeah, some of those parents do just that, and it's stupid, in my opinion lol. Here's a couple of links to stories talking about how that hampers the kids, as well.

Oh, and I don't like when parents give all thier kids names beginning with the same letter. Both my best friend and my brother did this.

Some of my cousins have 3 youngsters whose names all start with the same first letter.  They are all very active and when they get into trouble I have to do the mental name check to get the right name for the right kid.  lol
