One of the girls in the afterschool program is named brownie, and I that very previous week had seen a dog at animal control they named brownie, it makes no sense, yeah she has brown hair and brown eyes, but please, do not use names that could be used and is being used on dogs. The other girls name at the school is star, not to bad, but not a proper name in my mind. I have told James when if, we ever have kids we're not naming them stupid names, like mercede's and we're not naming them oldies names like bertha, and martha, or ester,

First off let me tell you my UMs have somewhat unique, but still normal names (Emma, Nathaniel, & Isaac). I was born in Japan and was supposed to be a girl (before ultrasounds) and my mother wanted to name me Mariko, thinking they could call me Mary. When I came out with distinctly unfemale bits, she almost went ahead and named me Mariko anyway, thinking they could call me Mark.
For those who don't know, Mariko is a very female name in Japan. I am glad that when growing up I was just plain old Bob, but now sort of wish she had of gone ahead with her plan, I could handle a distinctive name as an adult, but seeing as I went through high school in Japan, I am glad she didn't...that would have been a bit to close to a boy named sue for me.

when i was born, my mother was in a hospital quarantined for 10 days without much contact with her family, except by mail...i was 6 weeks' premature, so they hadn't decided on a name for me yet...they came to her with the birth certificate to fill out & she named me Beatrice Louise...she brought me home from the hospital & her Norwegian family threw a hissy fit about my name...they had heard the Swedish name, Linnea, but weren't sure of the traditional spelling, so left out one "n", which completely changes the pronunciation...growing up, i discovered that Americans couldn't pronounce it properly so i changed it to lyn...in 1989, i moved to San Francisco, got divorced & took back my ethnic name along with my Norwegian mother's family name--at least the one they used when they got to this country--& have no problem with however anyone pronounces it & have been known to answer to almost anything beginning with "L".....

when i was pregnant with my daughter, i thought that her name was Vanessa, but it just didn't seem to fit her at all...she was born in 1970, & i was a hippie flower child, so i could have named her any number of strange things...when Chelsea was suggested to me, i just knew that was her name...i believe that babies & animals name themselves if we just listen to them...before the Clintons, there were very few Chelsea's in the land, so of course she hated it for being different.......

i'm one of those who was given an unusual name & became an unusual person who gave up on fitting in with the masses in Kindergarten...why would i want to be like most of them anyway?????

I recall the first time a young lady waited on me and her name badge said "Sunflower".

I offered my sympathies and assured her it wasn't anything personal.  The 60's culture did strange things to our minds :)

Well, between my maiden name and my given name of Michelle, i went thru LOTS of teasing when i was growing up.....but I also learned how to take the crap, and deliver a good right hook to get RID of it!

The biggest, absolutely the MOST aggravating thing about my name is the fact that EVERY, and by God, i do mean EVERY, time i get introduced to someone new, they inevitably start singing the Beatles song of the same name......I can't stand the Beatles for that very reason....never was a fan amyway, but now i just can't stand them!  (My apologies to all the Beatles fans out there, nothing personal!)  And of course, i hated the name groing up.....used a nickname and refused to answer to the given one...even walked out of classes when the teacher wouldn't use the nickname, wouldn't even answer to it.  Now, it's just my name, i even use it when i introduce myself.....and try not to punch out the doofus who starts to sing.....

I love the Celtic names, they are almost lyrical in their pronunciation sometimes.  But if someone names the kid w/one, i would love to see the  original Celtic spelling, not some bastardized version.....but that's just my opinion....

When i was working in Rochester NY, i thought i was being set up one night by a cop who wanted license info for a poor guy named Harry Member.....yes....HARRY MEMBER!  Now there are some SICK parents!!!  I'd be running to court to change the name as soom as I was able to walk!!!!!

My given name is Gregory, which I cannot stand.

Never really all that crazy about Greg either.  But after becoming fluent in Dutch as a child I now have issues saying the letter G without a burr in the back of my throat.  As an adult, half the time I say my own name it sounds like Im throwing up.

When they decided to nickname me "Lucky" on the docks, I finally have a handle I can work with.

When I had my daughter, Brittney, Jasmine, and Ariel were all the rage. I'm a firm believer in unique names especially because my last name is so common. She hates her name now - pronounced liked Symphony but spelled different. I have come across  no one(yet) with her name.

eta - My given  name is also the name of a song by Freddie Jackson. Fortunately, no one seems to know it :)

I went to school with kids whose family last names were respectively,
"Pew" and "Peas".  Definately not fun!

And then there was the contractor who handed me his business card
to give to my boss at the time - "Dick Seaman" !

For years I swore I would change my name. I hated it. Jo...ugh. Not Josephine, not Joanne. It's just Jo. Add to that I have no actual middle name just the middle initial of  D. Yet I was never called Jody. Always Jo (pause) D. I went by Joey for quite awhile in high school. I swore I was going to change it when I was 18. To Jessica or Taylor or Lisa for that matter. I just wanted to have a normal name.

Seeing some of the names today especially after reading this thread I actually called home and thanked my mom for giving me a name I can appreciate.

More to the OP...I grew up with a girl named Bo Peep. She married a guy with the last name of Shephard. Yep, she goes by Bo Peep-Shephard. I laughed my ass off at my last high school reunion when she handed me her business card. Absolutely priceless.

my "real name" <ahem> is NEVER said properly,
ALWAYS spelled wrong,
and will never be found on a pen in a dollar store!!

the closest you will ever find it in a song is "my sharona." and well, i am good with that. at least the band who recorded it "the kinks" have a cool name.

i just hate being called shauna all the time.

Okay, I know a family that has cornered the market on the most "creative" use of naming....

Family of five, two girls and three boys.... the girls - both named Fauna. The boys...Joy (middle name - to the World), Peace (middle name - on Earth) and Love. (Love doens't have a middle name). One of the girls has a son named Starr, and one of the boys has a daughter named Skye.

you don't blink at names very often in the public school system anymore. mary, mike, japheth, jasmine, asthma, angel (on-hell), muyonia, kaisha (kuh-shay), deer, kamari, otter... seen and heard the trends go by, with and without new and improved spellings. the only problem is when it's time to have one of your own, it's awful hard not to associate a name with a headache child you already know.

In my class at school, gotta love it were the folowing:
Lord Aki (that was his given name), Diamond, Chestnut, Sara, Quanstine, Rebekkah,  Toby, Antonio and Fukmi (said exactly sa its spelled.)

Teaching was great, but try keeping a straight face calling role in that class.!
DV

My sister-in-law teaches kindergarden in NC, and she says the same thing... i can't remember any examples offhand, but i know she also has a fair amount of "royalty" in her classes.

Of course, dumb names are nothing new... my wife has a great-uncle who's a geneologist, and he's found records of their family from the colonial days of the U.S. with names like Orange and Preserved.

And the person who used to own the land near us was named Burden... that's gotta be a bit rough on the ol' self-image

lilsubl, what a wonderful story lol.

Naming my daughter happened pretty much the same way. We originally were going to name her Christie, but when she was born, Brittany Suzanne just popped out.

My parents were odd about naming me. No one knows my full name and I have gone by Misty since I was in high school.
