As many will recall, I smoke quite a few cigarettes every day, and there are quite a few idiomatic expressions and slang used in relation to smoking all over the world. Should I plan to visit the USA, please could you tell me the correct local expression for "bumming a fag"?

Good day, Lady E. I have consulted the magic 8-ball, and have found that at most, there are 11 people in the USA that know "fag" as an expression meaning a cigarette. The other 99.999999% would attempt to sue anyone using the term, or worse, invite them to a Klan meeting.
 
Ask for a cig, a smoke, or a cancer stick. "Bumming" is correct usage over here, by the way.
