When do you decide it's time for a new car?  When the rims go out style?  When it goes to the junkyard?  My Soob is acting up again.  It already needs some maintenance (tires, brakes, front end work) and the electrical is getting troublesome.

I can keep the same payment with an econo-box Honda, but dammit, I LIKE this car.

I usually replace my cars once they die and it will cost more to repair it than what i paid for the car...or when gas prices get outrageous and i need something a lil more reasonable.

I have only had 2 cars. I replaced my first car the minute I had enough cash in the bank to write a check for my new one. If you were wondering it is a 2006 GMC Sierra 2500 Duramax. I don't think I will be replacing it for a while though, it is too much fun to drive in cities.

I drove disposables for years.  Buy it for a few hundred, put in a few weekends at pick-a-part or U-Pull-It, drive it til it drops, repeat.  I abused my last pick-up in every way except getting all 4 wheels off the ground.  I only bought this one because I needed to start building my credit back up.  Then I got attached.

When I start to worry about driving it too far, when I double check the AAA membership card experation date every time I drive more than a few blocks..;)
I had a Volvo I loved loved.. but it started having electrical problems, and I got over the feeling quickly.  At one point, I turned on the wipers, and it died, going 50 mph. Not fun.

I just bought the Toyota Prius.

Now, I'm not a granny when it comes to driving.  At least 20 km over the limit, usually 30, hard on gas and brakes, and love corners at 90.

2000 km in, I have gone through less than 100 litres (1200 miles, 25 gallons)

At current and future gas prices, I am saving a ridiculous amount, regardless of the higher payment.

Yours,

benji

You guys may be impressed with the gas mileage that my truck gets for being a full sized, "fuel hog." I get between 29 and 31 when I have the chip set for economy. When I pull a trailer however and need the torque I get 12-14. Needless to say I don't enjoy pulling trailers

I too drove replaceables for years as you did. Had amazing luck with them, the last one being a '88 Buick that came to me with 180,000 on the odometer, spent a grand total of $600 to buy, $400 to fix it, and sold it to a friend 2 years later for $300 with 253,000 on the odometer. My father-in-law made a "game" out of buying $100 "junks" driving them for 1 year doing literally nothing to them and selling them sometimes for $200!!! George

Even at the peak prices, I might spend $80 US a month on gas and this one will be paid off in less than a year.  No way a hybrid will save me a car payment every month... Now if I was driving my gas-guzzling old Dodge truck, it would be a different story.

My mother still has her 1992 Plymouth Voyager van, in decent condition, she is the ONLY owner, it runs, needs a bit of work, but she likes it. I LOVED my car until my exhubby totaled it, 1991 Ford Probe, that care was great. I don't care what's 'in style' if its safe, it runs and no saftey recalls, thats what matters. I'm not one to follow the crowd or fads.

Or if you drove a lot.  I have put on 2000 km in a month.

I tend to put lots of miles on my vehicles also, thats why a deisel was a good choice. I pay almost the same fore fuel, but the truck will run easily for 400,000 miles. I drive my truck from fire to fire most of the time and the government pays for my fuel so the cost of fuel is really not a big deal for me during the summer. So far since the beginning of May I have put on 19,000 miles. I am hoping that 400,000 miles is just another day of driving when it comes

I love a diesel engine, but CA has some weird rules for them.  I've heard Honda has a next generation passenger car diesel coming soon, and I was hoping to wait until then to buy.

If you had a ton of money...like 135,000 you could look for a Benz with a Bluetech Engine. 700 Miles to a tank of Deisel. There are always the VW TDI's too. If I was to get a car it would probably be one of those cause they look decent and get 50+ mpg. I like my truck though the most just cause it sounds cool when I accelerate.

I love the whirr of the turbo when starting off. Nothing beats it

Caterpillar....  the Duramax sounds a lot better than a Cummins though. I had an old Peugeot diesel that sounded like shit but gave me a solid 38 mpg in a full size sedan.

My Nissan truck is 10 years old, and it is still in great condition with 90,000 miles.  1997 was the last year they made the hardbody model, and I had a 90 Nissan before that my brother totaled.  It gets pretty good gas mileage.  I can normally get around 28 miles to the gallon with my driving habits.  It is lower geared for towing, but I never need to tow anything.  One of my favorite things about that model is the fact that it didn't change very much over the 10 years it was manufactured.  There were a lot of them made, so it is easy to find cheap parts for it if I need them.  The only thing I dislike about Nissan trucks is the speedometer.  The needle starts to stick after about 30,000 miles

The first car I ever owned was a 69 VW Karman Gia.  I hated that car, the breaks would go out on it if you had to come to a quick stop, and I constantly had to work on it.  I drove it for about 3 years before I got rid of it.  Then I had a 84 Mazda pickup, and I loved that little truck too.  I took that truck places you would have a hard time driving a Jeep in.  It was a tough little truck.  I sold it when I needed a car to commute with, which was the first new car I ever bought.  The guy I sold it too was someone I still know, and he is still using it as a work truck.  It must have 500,000 miles on it and is still running.  The first new car I ever bought was a 93 Chevy Cavalier, and I hated that car too.  There was constantly something wrong with it.  But I was going to school when I had it, and having to commute 100 miles a day.  So I had to keep it.  I ended up putting 110, 000 miles on it.

I love stories about old cars and trucks like these .

It's hard to know when you've got a good one. I had a 72 Nova, the front end gave up the ghost after a couple of weeks, and I had a 1977 Cutlass, ugly as sin, that ran and ran and ran.

Hopefully, next year, I'll be able to get something a little newer; I'm in a 1990 Olds now, and it's a good car, but still.

If you like the car, then's it worth the maintenance money. Would you trade a woman you really liked simply because she needed some attention to bring her into line? She can forget the shoes, mind you, but trading her isn't an option.
