I was in band, chorus, drama (I was the student director for years), speech, academic bowl, and various honor societies.

Was I cool?

I was a force to be reckoned with even by the principal and vice-principal. I changed the way the graduating class choose leaders and "important" things for their graduation. When the principal told that there was a tradition to these things I pointed to the flaws in his logic and won. I spoke back to the vice-principal but never in a way that he could constrew as anything but the truth and then he'd back down.

Teachers adored me and often asked me to help them with special projects. The chorus director and band director allowed me to schedule my own time in those groups around my academic schedule.

I protected those who were picked on -- every knew that if I had befriended someone, only a complete idiot would mess with them. I literally only had to stand behind someone to get a bully to physically back up and leave.

Yet at home it was a constant struggle. At school my natural dominant tendancies came out while at home I'd had abuse since day one to contend with. I think my stress level dropped so much when I left for college and I haven't turned back since.

Was I cool? Probably not. But I'd rather be a force to be reckoned with and I was.

I played clarinet too but not first chair -- I had too many other things I was doing. Someone once challenged me for my chair position however and backed down without even playing.

We did this blind play off thing. We each played a difficult piece the director chose a week before. We were hidden behind a wall and the band members would vote on the best player.

I played and the other person's mouth just fell open and she left and took her lower chair. Silly girl was newer and hadn't yet learned that what TammyJo wanted, TammyJo got not from using sex or being a whiny, simply by doing it right, by using logic, and by just stating it was hers.

Edited to add: I wasn't part of the popular crowd, because I just didn't like them or feel like I had much in common (way to spoiled and such) - I ended up just deciding specific people I wanted to be friends with, mainly guys.

I was a violinist (still play actually) and we used to have weekly non-blind challenges (you stood up and challenged someone for their seat and played in front of everyone and they voted in front of you) - that was the best and probably most stressful time in my life.

I would say that I was average, neither popular nor a geek. I was in NJROTC for my sophomore and junior years. Some of those students bordered on being the most intelligent to those who partied hard. I remember one student in ROTC was stoned. We had our share of the popular students, freaks, rednecks and black students. The worst fight I witnessed were two black girls going at it and fighting for a man.

The friends I had were those who partied and were labeled as the "sluts" of the school and people would assume that I fell under the same category. At least my friends were true to themselves as opposed to those who rode on the coattails of popularity who were the hypocrites.

I also remember that our president of the student body was pregnant and that caused a little uproar at my school. Keep in mind, I graduated in 1977, so this was not very common at the time to see pregnant girls walking around my school. She graduated though and looked like she was about to have the child at the ceremony.

i had been in special ed thru out my school years. But the biggest adjustment was when I switched from ele. school to middle school. you see Most of the time when the "regular kids" were changing teachers for different subjects, my classmates and I didn't. (though did regularly go with them for music art and gym. and a few of us like me, went out for reading and spelling.) Then when middle school came around it was a different ball game for me. Everything was alot harder. subjects, the teachers were stricter, the kids were meaner. And dealing with rampaging hormones on top of it! Argh! I ended up living in my head alot in ms. I wasn't in the cool crowd at all, but I had 1 or 2 friends that were. Boys were always walking by me and snapping my bra strap, I pretended to be annoyed but secretly was delighted. It is just as well I was so shy, I probably would gotten in trouble real quick. (I was pretty boy-crazy, usually had a new crush every week.) By the time HS rolled around I was in a much better frame of mind and felt more secure. (Though still, and still to this day have a self esteem issue.) I went on 3 dates in HS. The last one was with a good friend of mine who had a awful crush on me. He was my 1st kiss too. I had a close group of friends, but I was somewhat a loner. By senior year I was usually cutting class at least 3-4 times a week, ( it is a wonder that I was able to graduate with my class.) I usually cut alone, read a book or wrote stories in one of the rarely used girls bathrooms. I hated the idea of being popular in HS. I saw most of the popular kids as being shallow and egotistical. Now of course I know, they had just as many as insecurities and problems i did, the only different was, that everything they did was under a microscope.

Was I cool in school? I was so cool (How cool were you?!?), I was so cool I was a frozen block of ice. Shy to the point of being socially handicapped.

Honest, I am the poster guy for the Late Bloomer. I didn't really start to get my act together until my early thirties. That's when it all started to come together. I got over my shyness, became surer of myself. It has been all uphill from then. Seriously, if you are young and don't have it together, I am living proof that it can be turned around.

OK, I actually WAS cool. At least, I hung out with the cool crowd. Course that could have been cuz my bf was out of school and had a car or it could have been cuz I really was cool (still am, btw).

I played football, practiced martial arts and was very active. I was not part of any specific group but I was one of the few people in school that everyone would come up to and talk with, which was how i liked it no labels just good conversation.

I was on of those unique people who could fit into any crowd I choose yet I belonged to none, I could hang with the "cool" kids, or with the kids no one talked too. It just depended on my mood. Years later one of the cool kids said to me she envied me because I did not care what people thought, and did as I pleased.

No, I didn't consider the popular group to be stuck up, though there were a couple who I thought were. Like most responders, I got along well with most everyone, but I didn't consider myself part of any specific group.

I played in the band (I played Sax no clarinet ... though I know how to play may more instruments) worked in the theatre, was on the football team until I walked off it my senior year, was the leader of the academic league …

I’ve spent most of my life as an outsider; even when I go to D/s clubs now I don’t fit in. I set trends in things not to do … “I am not totally worthless I can always serve as a bad example.” Not my motto, but it often fits me more than I’d like it too.

I found out way to late in High School that I was seen as cool. I learned this after the Senior Prom. It turns out that while I fit into cliques everywhere, with out actually being welcomed; I was seen as someone who did whatever he wanted. I have always lived my life the way I choose; cool or not.

Yes I was a pot head, I was the man with the weed for sale. I thought I was cool, but I was an ass, I am glad I quit drugs in 89. I wore my Rush and Black Sabbath concert shirts to school. People would say, hey did you see them in concert, and I would say, no I drove up to the Philly Spectrum and bought the shirt in the parking lot and then left. They would look confused, then I would tell them I was kidding. I was just another generic number in school until I started selling weed, then I new every body, that I would never know. I hope nobody in the future takes my weed selling high school route, it is nothing to be proud about.

Well, this has been great. Without too much analysis, I can see that most of us were independant minded and also of above average intelligence (which I pretty much expected.) A lot of us were involved in what you might consider geeky activities, but probably weren't considered geeks. I was in the art club myself. And what is it with clarinets? Maybe that black wood and silver fittings just speaks to us on a deeper level.
By the time I reached high school, nobody was picking on me anymore, this is most likely because I had started wrestling and a new hobby, blacksmithing. I didn't care much for school, mostly wanted to be elsewhere. I found the work rather easy, and if I had applied myself I would have done much better in my classes, but I just didn't care that much. I got along with most people, and no one really hated me. I also did a lot of drinking then, and when I look back, I think I was a bit of a jerk. My 25th reunion was this year, but I didn't have the time or money to attend, maybe I'll make the 30th. Anyway, that's my story.

Can I say yes and no?

There were distinct groupings in my junior high (7th and 8th grade for those of you who have been through the middle school concept instead) and high school. There were the Jocks, the Smart Kids, the Preppies, the Ranchers/Farmers (aka as the Goat Ropers or rednecks) and the Freaks (aka as the Longhairs or "stoners"). Now, there could be a sprinkling of the characteristics from each group in an individual but you wound up being classed, even if you didn't want to be, in one group or the other.

I was a longhaired guy who drove a hot rod (and later, a motorcycle too), helped to organize a sit-in against the school dress code (got suspended a week for that), and played organ in a rock band. This put me in the Freak group. Because of the hot rod and playing in a rock band, I was considered cool among them. The hot rod also helped with some of the guys in other groups as did playing in a rock band help with certain girls in other groups but my place was in the Freaks. On the bad side, the hair resulted in at least a couple of fights with several guys in the "redneck" crowd who were determined they were going to cut my hair until I "looked like what a man should look like".

Characteristics of the other groups that I carried? I had a 3.5 grade point average. I loved chemistry (and no, not for the reason you might think). I played baritone sax in the school band. I was on the gymnastics team (vault and high bar) for 3 years. I liked country western music too. And I liked to dress in what was in fashion (bells, ruffled shirts, lace shirts, hiphugger jeans, metal belts, vests, boots, chokers, etc.). But in the end, whether it was the majority of my characteristics...or who I got along with the most...or those mysterious judges who seem to be in every school (you know...the ones who decide who fits where)...I ran with the Freaks. I was happy there and cool in the way I noted above.

The song by Janis Ian "Seventeen" was my theme song in high school. Two years ago i went to my 20th High School Reunion. i was no longer 17 ~grins~. Since i no longer live in the area i stayed at a hotel and took a cab to the reunion. Let's just say i did not have to take a cab back to the hotel and i had 'em lined up to take me. That was a fanfuckingtastic evening!

I was the invisible one...Yes I was in many plays in school and on the debate team..yet when not in that venue I made a concerted effort to be invisible, for school acceptability was not the focus of my life..Getting on with my life was, after school was where I lived, wether it was in Karate class, trying out for parts in plays in the metro area,or smoking a "doobie" with my more intimate friends.So no cliques were not for me...individuality was....Tempting

Was I in the "cool" clique? Not hardly!
I was the fat kid who sat in the library reading books that were five grades above my supposed "reading level." I tried band, but was pushed out of it by the others. I was generally a "C" level student, simply because I found every class I was in to be dull as hell. (Oddly, they were all amazed that I came out second highest in my class in the SATs) When I graduated, I got the hell out of Dodge, and went somewhere where there were people who thought like me, and felt the same way I did.

The interesting thing to me is: most of the high school "outsiders" I knew in my class are all doing quite well later in life. They are happy in their marriages, have good jobs, and have some measure of success. The "popular" kids, on the other hand, seem to have a rather high incidence of getting in trouble with the law, divorice, alcohol/drug abuse, etc. I think they topped out in high school, while the rest of us were just learning how to deal with crap being flung at us by so-called "superiors." We were just getting started.

I apparently was known by everyone but was really not a part of anything. I was in the band (Percussionist/astep up from drummer). I was lumped in with the military group about 30 of us had enlisted before graduation bur we never met as a group per se. Being 18 with a draft number of 2 I couldn't even get a job so to avoid the Army I jioned the Navy.

I was voted onto homecoming court twice. I won homecoming queen my senior year. My very best friends was the prom queen. I was the captain of the basketball, volleyball, and soccer team. I was popular at my school, but I went to a private school. I had more friends than most people, but they enjoyed my quirky sense of humor and I guess...we just got each other. I never considered us a clique because we were always open and welcoming to others. I am actually still very close to the majority of my high school 'clique.'
