For some reason it's not letting me see the responses on the first page so I don't know if anyone has mentioned the first book in Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series.
At one point the protagonist is captured and put under the control of a woman who is part of an all woman sect of torturers/interogaters. Before long she picks him as her mate.

I read this when I was probably too young to be reading it, but I credit it with sparking my curiousity with this lifestyle.

Although it has no explicit scenes per se, the "Lyonesse" trilogy by Jack Vance has a thread of pervery all the way through.

Exactly. What the author may wish to teach the reader is not necessarily what a reader will get out of a book.

I had emails from people when my first book came out asking me if I was like the main female character in the title story because she was "such a perfect mistress". I was horrified because I thought it was fairly clear she was very evil in the full meaning of that word.

Yeah, those Chanur cats are hot! As Faramir says, the books upend assumptions, even the assumptions of the matriarchal cats, but the big thing that makes the cats hot for me is that they are in power and exercise it over the human man. It doesn't matter that Cherryh challenges matriarchal or patriarchal assumptions in her books -- she still plays and plays and plays with them. Every book has male characters of whatever species submitting to more powerful women (not all male characters and maybe not all of her books, but a lot). I don't find that elsewhere too often. And the way she describes the strength of the female cats is in female terms.

Was it Merchanter's Luck where a young man is taken prisoner by a (basically) pirate space ship and made the sex slave of the female captain? How cool is that?! In the Cyteen books a woman is in charge too, but I don't remember that one as well. There's always someone having to submit to someone else in her books. Pushes my buttons.

I certainly say most of Heinlein's adult fiction for polyamory themes, and Spider Robinson's Callahan's books include references to crossdressing, polyamory, and BDSM (though minor, not major themes in the books).

Recently I've been reading the Cheysuli novels by Jennifer Roberson which have a variant of polyamory running through them. The Cheysuli honor both a cheysula (wife) and meijha (mistress, girlfriend, second wife if you will). It's a one man, two women dynamic, but it is prime to some of the novels and a very interesting theme among the larger canvas of the plots.

I whizzed through the thread, forgive me if I missed these elsewhere:

Diana Galbadon (Outlander Series: "Outlander," "Dragonfly in Amber," "Voyager," "Drums of Autumn," "Fiery Cross" and "A Breath of Snow and Ashes")seems to have gone missing. The power of time travel, historical research that is spot-on, and a relationship that we could argue ad infinitum: Who is dominant?

A resounding second (or third, or whatever) for Jacqueline Carey's "Kushiel" series. Intricately woven storylines, a culture nearly as well-developed as Tolkien's (ok, that might be a bit of overstatement) and a masochist as the primary protagonist?

Just pinch me.

Non-sci-fi, but fantasy, Bertrice Small's "Skye O'Malley" series. Really, really repetitive mind candy. Sometimes, mind candy is just what the doctor ordered.

Yes, Gabaldon's Outlander series was hot, but I never thought of it as having any BDSM themes.

It seems there are many series with female dominant themes- does anyone know of any s/f or romance/historical with male dom emphasis? (and yes, I know most romance has hidden D/s, but I mean overt....)

Also, in pure s/f- has anyone read Sherri Tepper- The Gate to Womens Country - I think was the name. And Octavia Butler's Kindred?

I could look at Diana Gabaldon as having that ultimate who is control answer, but then, the answer was always "Jamie is...once Claire is done acting, and as long as no one's sick..."
But the thread wasn't about historical romance, it was about sci-fi fantasy. ~smiles~

I personally thought "Time Enough For Love" by Robert Heinlein was by a man who was dominant throughout his entire life, with ever so many females who adored him for it. It wasn't blatant D/s, it was simply a strong man who led the way in many directions.

The Apprentice Adept series by Piers Anthony is about a man with a strong, dominant personality who wins the love and respect of friends and romance alike through force of will. No kink play implied, but once he wins his lady, he is the lord of his home, undeniably.

And of course, I have to second the Barsoom/Mars novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs. I'll be Dejah Thoris for my Captain John Carter anyday.

I would contend that the time travel qualifies the entire Outlander series as Sci-fi.

Who's in control? Jamie, yep. As long as everyone's healthy.

I'd say the time travel was fantasy, rather than sci fi since it didn't involve technology, but I generally categorize them as historical romance in my mind - as I think many others do. But I do agree they deserve a place in the fantasy genre for that trait...

Erm...the thread wasn't about BDSM books. It was about sci fi, fantasy, and horror books with sexual/bdsm themes running in them. That's why The Story of O and Laura Antoniou books weren't listed.

Orphans of Chaos by John C. Wright.

A light but very clear touch.

A group of students raised at a small english boarding school discover they are not so nornal, nor is the school. The main character also discovers that she would very much like to be taken by a strong man... and that a spanking is not an all bad thing.

Yet another enthusiastic thumbs up for the exquisitely lovely Kushiel's Legacy series by Jacqueline Carey. It's hard to convey with enough superlatives how much I enjoy her work.

Carey is a midnight seduction with wine and roses and thorns, with the object of your most inner desires, that changes your inner being forever; an awakening, a becoming, the knowledge that love really does make us more than the sum of the two parts, and it's hard work to keep it that way.

Hamilton is a hard, nasty, dirty fuck with a stranger in a dark alleyway, that may have left you with the clap... but you don't care, you just had to have that itch scratched.
