The court decided that my son pay his ex a certain amount of money. At the time the money leaves my son's hands it is no longer his money. At the time the money enters his ex's hands it is HER MONEY. If she spends it all on lacy undies to seduce her next boytoy I still do not see that as any form of abuse of my son. The court did not specifically determine WHAT the money must be spent on. My grands are happy healthy children and as far as any of us can tell, not abused AT ALL. She is a good mother though she has made a few bad decisions, again, haven't we all?

I think that the confusion lies again in determining which parent has rights to what material garbage, rather than focusing on what is best for their offspring. As long as the offspring are happy and thriving, that is what is most important.

I don't believe in supremacy of any one group over another -- sex, gender, race, religion, ethnic group, age, nationality, or anything like that.

An individual may have superior skills or knowledge in an area but it is unlikely they will be superior in all areas.

What an individual adult wants to believe is their business.

I have a serious problem with it when it leaves their private life and becomes something more like how they raise their children or how they vote or how they treat anyone outside their immediate adult relationship -- those things effect everyone not just them.

Also it seems like in our culture right now we are just saying that only women are abused. Yes we laugh when we hear that a man has been abused and that because he was abused hes not a real man. But men are abused and equality should also be involved in the prosecution of the abuser.

This is an another equality issue that is not being addressed by our society. Chivilry might be the reason it's not addressed. Men should be men, and society should protect women and children seems to be the attitude. Equal protection under the law would probably give everyone the most freedom.

Tristan

There is also the stereotype that males should be strong and be in charge. If you were raised like this, admitting that you survived abuse then risks being seen as not strong and not in charge. This is something I heard repeatedly when I help start a support group for male survivors on my college campus years ago.

That was a tricky situtation. The women's group didn't want the men, without exception they had survived abuse by men (ithe women in the support therapy groups at that time). Men weren't always eager to meet with other men because of the above reason and because without exception (at that time and with those people) they had survived abuse by other men. It took a lot of one-on-one therapy for some men to become comfortable enough with addressing what they survived to be able to meet with others.

Women can be abusers too and I had one male submissive whose mother had abused him regularly as a child. I think we don't hear about it because 1) it doesn't fit the stereotypes of male and female and 2) it may feel more shameful then for a survivor to speak up.

There is also the fact that many people feel emotional abuse isn't real abuse -- they look for physical or sexual abuse. Let me use me (as I always try to) as an example.

By the time I was six I had survived sexual assaults and rapes by three different men (none of them my father or other biological relatives). It was shattering and pushed my mind to develop MPD as a survival method. But my mother psychologically abused me from the day I was born until a few years ago when she came to therapy with me and I finally said to her "Treat me right or you will never talk to or see me again". I still struggle with the ideas she put in my head.

Which was worse? I think they were equally bad.
