Living in small town Ontario, Canada..there is no such thing as Cold Stone Creamery...BUT...i also live very close to Michigan and had the good fortune to run across a brand new CSC there..

Being diabetic..i appreciated the fact that i could get a sugar free variety that could be jazzed up with apples..cinnamon ..or other goodies that were not high sugar..It was heaven to this poor deprived Cannuck!!!...Pure Heaven!!!

Status: offline 		I will take the 15 min train ride to Hanford to Superior Dairy for Ice Cream any time, that place is worth the ride and the calories, its homemade and its the BEST in the Valley if not anywhere; as for Cold Stone, its ok at best, my munchkin likes it, but he has only had it once or twice, I'm not a fan of it, it tastes kinda generic; I prefer something more original or at least something that has been around for a while so you KNOW the quality, besides, its expensive and not worth the price.

Status: offline 		I'm not sure how you can call french toast ice cream not original.  Or a "Boston Cream Pie" creation.

Or that fact that you can create your OWN ice cream creation with whatever ice cream and mix-ins that you want- that makes it about as unoriginal as your own imagination.

But I will say again it's not for kids.  Just like you don't go to Tiffany's to buy a ring for your 5 yo daughter, you don't go to a gumball machine for some quality jewelry.

Status: offline 		my son enjoys it, but then, he's older now and can appreciate being able to choose his own combinations. The two younger babies would be just as happy with a scoop of storebrand ice cream from the supermarket. I think it would depend on the kid. Whether they really "get" the being origional idea. And kids can come up with some really great combinations. They have no pre-concieved notion of what flavors are supposed to go together. Plenty of times has the seven year old picked a combo that made me curl my lip, but I tried it and dang if it wasnt actually good.

I know I am one of the few who thinks Cold Stone is generic, but, it is, that idea has been around for years, its just mainstream now and 'in.' Plenty of places have let u mix stuff in your fav ice creame, depending on where you live. My son has done it for years here at home; he mixes all sorts of things into ice cream, cerel, brownie and cookie pieces, dried fruit, chocolate chips, sprinkles, etc. The only limit is ones imigination.

I find in the local grocery store that I enjoy just as much.
Lately, I have been enjoying Edys Slow Churned reduced  fat icecream.

Status: offline 		Cold Stone Creamery, yum!  I love me some cake batter ice cream (sometimes they have light cake batter ice cream, but it's not as good) with pieces of yellow cake, banana and M&Ms.  Sometimes I'll mix it up and do cake batter with graham cracker and strawberries.   

I haven't had Cold Stone since last summer, but I might have to try convincing the husband that it's okay to have ice cream for dinner....

Yeah but...it's one of those things where it always tastes better because someone else is making it for you.

Do NOT go expecting an ordinary sundae or banana split.  Don't take kids- while they may have some kid specific things, kids just won't appreciate the fun and variety- just take them to McDs for a dollar sundae and they will be just as happy.

There are three sizes to ice creams- like it, love it and gotta have it.  That is how you order.  95% of the time when you order a like it, they will over size it and put it in the "love it" bowl- still only charging for the like it size.

Onto the ice cream- they have several "signature creations" which are things every store knows to make and had a great combo of flavors.  Usually it involves one flavor ice cream and 3 mix-ins.  A mix-in is anything you want to add to the ice cream- yellow cake, caramel topping, whipped cream, fruit, candy, etc. 

You can make your own "creation" by picking an ice cream and adding your own mix-ins, but tends to be a little more expensive.

They have milkshakes and smoothies which are awesome as well.

What really gives COldstone its great taste is the mix process- they get a small ball of the ice cream, smash it down by hand, pile on the mix ins, and then fold it and mix it together with ice cream spades.  Some are better at this than others, but if you let them know you are a first timer and really like things mixed well, they put some extra into it.

And you get to watch the whole process so you can make sure you get everything you want.

Sometimes they sing if you give a tip or request it. 

Maybe it appeals to the kid in me or the spoiled princess, and the flavors there really just do rock and kick ass of any otherp lace I've been (including Amy's Ice Cream which can kiss my ass), and having a cup of a freshly mixed creation I just requested is awesome.

Oh and they'll give you a free small sample of anything you ask for.

Ice cream is medicinal, no doubt.  This thread is evil because now I'm craving the stuff.  And while I do enjoy Cold Stone, don't get me wrong (I like their sweet cream and their banana flavors), Swensons is still my favorite - Union & Hyde in SF is the only one left that I'm aware of.  Next to that is Baskin Robbins, and THEN Cold Stone. 

Then again, I don't like all the frick & frack in my ice cream.  I just like the sweet, creamy, delicious ice cream....yum!

Status: offline 		I've tried Amy's a couple of times as well as Marble Slab and I personally put Cold Stone above both.  I will say I've had a few CSC creations that I thought were just okay or good so I'd say if you're not impressed at first try some of the others and see if you don't fall in love.  Some of my favorites:

Apple Pie A La Mode
Boston Cream Pie  (recently discontinued I think but they'll probably still make one if you request it)
Strawberry Blonde
Delicious Dirt (or something close to that)
Chocolate Devotion

They also make a pretty great Pumpkin shake or it may have been a smoothie around Xmas, so look out for that one as well.

Yes, you can probably make some pretty great combos yourself at home but for those of us who want to try others ideas or
who don't naturally come up with these fabulous things out of our own heads (I like to think my mixing talents lie elsewhere)
Cold Stone is a great find.

Status: offline 		I gotta go with LA about Amy's Ice Cream being way over rated compared to eithe Cold Stone or Marble Slab.  Back a few years ago Amy's had some decent flavor bases but the last couple of years it is as if they are aiming for the weirdest flavor bases.  Plus they must have changed the overall formulation because the ice cream is too stiff now to do a proper mix in.

OK, having said all of that......I love a Cold Stone cheesecake with rainbow sprinkles.  Kinda simple but they are the only place I have even visited that actually gets the ice cream base to taste like a rich, creamy New York style cheesecake.  And, I have always loved rainbow sprinkles.....so, combine and voila! happy me lol.

Honestly their ice cream isn't very good.  Its way to sweet and just not really my thing.  There are a couple of local places to me that make great ice cream and if I'm going to buy ice cream I'll buy Hagen Das or Breyers.
