Yes, ps, I do see the difference.  Have to admit that I'm glad there is one, since I am rather fond of the particular term that I use.  I've noticed recently that it often comes when I am wishing someone goodnight and adding that I send them a kiss on the forehead for sweet dreams.  Maybe it has to do with the protective feelings that I have for certain submissive friends, even though they are not submissive to Me in particular.  Something I will have to think on.

I wonder if there are others who do these kinds of things as well?

Hi Ma`am, In my opinion any name has merit. Terms such as pet, lil one and My "anything" make me feel cherished.
A Mistress saying thank you " anything " ( or plain thank you )after having done a chore, gives a sense of satisfaction and purpose for a job well done.
Being called little boy or little man, while degrading it still serves to remind me of the my place within the relationship.

LadyAlzara...i`ve never been called Cannon-fodder but its growing on me already [;)]

Remember this SNL sketch from the late 80's?  I know it is kind of silly but this approach still totally cracks me up - see part of SNL transcript below.  The names that I may come up with are sure to be many and are meant to be a bit suprizing and to have diffferent connotations at various times.  It usually becomes some sort of ongoing joke.  But truth is I love the "boy" term and if it is just not a good fit for someone well then they will get a more fitting name - but be sure they will get a name - many in fact.

BoiJen -> RE: What is with this "boy" thing? (7/5/2007 3:27:22 PM)

Okay so what gets it for me is being her boi. I respond to being called by my gender identity with her as a state of she's in charge and sorta like "it's on" now. Cuz at her parents, for example, calling me by name is standard but saying "hey boi" is a nice little reminder of our relationship. It makes me feel good.

boijen,

You're just so darned cute you'd make any of us change our sexual orientation!

I'd call you boi anytime, cutiebug.

politesub, this I found really interesting, as I do have a habit of calling many submissive friends (not My submissive) "lil one" as a term of friendly affection on a regular basis.  I have never heard any complaints about it, and they have often said that they know it makes them feel special.

I'm on equal level with my friends - regardless of my d/s relationship status (slave).  We would not be friends long if someone called me "lil one".

MySweetSubmssive -> RE: What is with this "boy" thing? (7/6/2007 10:36:05 PM)

The original post strikes me as stirring the nest rather than a request for information.

Is the term "boy" objectively accurate for a male that has reached majority?  No.  (Of course, as has been noted, it's not appropriate for a female, either, but it's ubiquitous).  I don't require BDSM to be reflective of literal reality.  It's the difference between a photograph of a pond and Monet's Waterlillies.  BDSM can be play, archetypes, roles, theater.  It can be courting a part of ourselves that isn't always present.  When I call a submissive "puppy," is it because I see fur?  Is it because he's a canine?  No, it's because he's made me happy, and I'm expressing affection and also reminding him of our relative positions.

Maybe you hate the word "boy."  (Maybe it reviles you and makes you hot at the same time!)  But I'm guessing that you do know why it's used: to humble someone, to infantilize him, to gently humiliate, as a gesture of affection.

There could be worst things a dominant could call you other than "boy." My Mistress refered to me as 'boy' and always has but I am young at 22

Just goes to show that some like it and some don't.  It's not a practice I would continue if they were opposed to it.

WyckedMystress -> RE: What is with this "boy" thing? (7/7/2007 6:14:24 AM)

for Me - boy is an affectionate term not meant as an insult and certainly used to show that he is not equal to Me. but there are many other names (as have been discussed) - I think whatever works for you.

Some Dommes dont like being called Ma'am   - again I dont think the boy is meaning offence but unless he is told - things cant change.

Why thank you very much. I appreciate the comment and the complament. As I staed I just really enjoy the power dynamic I have with Her...and ...it's free of romantic entanglement and we're firends at teh core...so Her calling me "boi" is just a pleasure for me and I know it is for Her...otherwise She wouldn't do it.

Thanks again. lol

Well...if you were a man then you wouldn't need a Mistress now would you?
I think that's the notion of "real men" right? I wouldn't know.

Real men have chest hairs or something.
Gross.

What is with this practice of calling your submissive or slave "boy?"  It really seems silly to me.

I am hardly a boy anymore, so I cannot even comprehend the term within my frame of reference.

The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary  defines the word "boy" as:

"BOY at various times has meant: 'a male servant', 'a servant or labourer from an indigenous people in Africa or Asia', 'a
male person of lowly status', 'a man of any age', and 'a male child'."

Were I  African-American, the term "boy" would surely be an insult!

Driving the clue bus, I am, Captain Obvious.
Read the definition you offered us: male servant.
Duh!

A fair point! While I know many desire to "desexualize" these words, I can't help but feel many who reverse and apply terms traditionally used for women upon men do so with the intent to demean twice. It does make me sometimes wonder what is being indirectly said of women in these cases.

Nonetheles, I find it tragic we don't have widely used terms specific to lowering the male sex in our language. In order to do this, we often need to get "creative."

Ok... you win.  Now let's all get creative and come up with as many demeaning terms for the lowly male gender in order to avoid this tragedy.  lol  Sounds easy to me.   You first amayos....   <smiles>

I held back from just replying to the OP, "OK cocksucker, what would you prefer to be called since boy offends your delicate sensibilities so very much?"  LOL

The funny thing is some who would be offended by "boy" would harden in their britches by being called "cocksucker".  lol

Personally, I think that if a submissive knows and trusts a dominant enough to communicate/play with/have a relationship with, that he should assume her words are said with affection or with care/good reason, and if they are still found to be offensive then he should feel comfortable enough to discuss the issue.

I can think of much worse than the word "boy", though I will admit that I would be offended to be called one myself!  Maybe the OP is onto something.  lol

aidan -> RE: What is with this "boy" thing? (7/7/2007 9:41:12 PM)

Lady Pact mentioned before she calls some of her submissive friends "little one". My Dominant friends call me the same thing, not to mention "boy" and "pup". I think myself on equal footing with them despite, in fact because of, these terms of affection. Because that's what they are, to me and them at least. I'm the youngest person in our circle of folks by far, and being the "boy" is a reflection of that. It's a nickname I'm proud of, and like Lady Pact mentioned, makes me feel special.

I don't mind being called boy at all. Cute, soft, "little" petnames make me smile, when used with affection. Though I might be a little offput by somebody calling me that before they got to know me a bit.

I am going to defend addicted2it here. I know his situation and he is very respectful, lives for serving, and is a friend of mine. he just needs A LOT of REAL Time with a great Domme. He has so many responsibilties right now and is frustrated with his situation. If I were in his situation I would be frustrated also!

I wish he were here, so I could have him serve me, and grow to love the nick: "boi, boy', etc. he cannot travel to me at this time, so we are building our frienship.

I don't think that any/most here were speaking negatively of addicted2it, but explaining their situations as to why "boy" was  not offensive to them, or why it was used by them affectionately.

addicted2it raised a question and got a variety of answers.   His opinion may change when the right someone someone someday calls him "boy", then again, maybe not- either way is okay.

If my follow up comments to his original question appeared to be insulting the OP, that was not my intention.  I think he is quite nice.

That very well may be the case, Irish.  Real life gets in the way of fantasy MOST of the time! A sufficient amount of people have expressed their view of this as was solicited by the OP, only to be dismissed as wrong simply because he has an issue with that word "boy" and its usage.  (And it was called as such by at least one of the women who gave him a reply only to be dismissed.)  He's made it sound as though he really didn't wish to DISCUSS the usage of the pet name, rather, simply complain/protest its use.
