And likewise bleeding heart liberals who feel the need to be overly empathetic and douse every thing they say in sugar are unappealing too.

GeekyGirl:
I am curious as to just which "bleeding heart liberal" you find unappealing.
Is it the one who felt that women should be allowed to vote?
Is it the one who felt slavery was a social wrong?
Is it the one who felt that children should not work in mines?
Is it the one who felt that education should be for everyone and not just the rich?
Is it the one who felt that husbands should not beat their wives?
My list is much longer but I think you may get my point.  Whether you like it or not all of the freedoms you take for granted including your the one that allows you to be kinky came from a bleeding heart liberal"
You may want to look up the "Comstock laws" to get an idea of what life would be like for you if it were not for a "bleeding heart liberal"

what makes someone "useless" ????

Why, it's "useful" people 'makes' someone "useless."
And, "useless" people serve a purpose....they 'make' someone "useful."

Now, to answer the myriad of other questions, where IS the power and who is seeking that power for what purpose?

Mystery solved. :P

velvetears,

I work in the self defense industry, and actually deal fairly frequently with various experts in the self-defense and personal protection field.  The most recent use of that statistic was by my boss and the owner of the company I work for at a corporate event I was the male assailant for last week.

It also correlates with other research I have done on my own.  If you are interested, you can view crime statistics compiled by the New York Police Department which go back over 100 years.  I do not have a link, but if you are interested perhaps I can dig one up.

The ones which make it to the news are the horror stories of multiple armed assailant home invasions, gang rapes, militia uprisings, etc.  The fact that the vast majority of crimes are a single, unarmed intruder means that these sorts of things dont make the news.  So what the news agencies treat the rest of us to are the freakish crimes, giving the populace a false sense that all crimes are by bizarre wackos.

Sinergy

edited to point out that the sound of a shotgun being cocked, while a frightening noise, might be doing exactly the same thing as yelling "get the fuck out of my house, I called the police."  The only point I am making relates back to actually doing a good full-body ventilation of the intruder.

i don't doubt at all, working in the industry you know what you are talking about.  What troubles me is if you are correct about that 99.9% stat is that if i hear multiple "death, shooting, rape" crimes then i am hearing the .01 % so that means there's a hell of a lot of break ins every single day in my area to make that stat true.  i think in the larger urban areas NY, Detroit, Chicago, Miami perhaps that stat is not as reliable simply because of population and the kinds of people who migrate to larger cities as opposed to less populated areas. For instance if i were a rapist i would probably want to blend in rather then stick out in a smaller populated area.  At any rate - the news is doing a good job of scaring the heck out of me.

I am not sure where you live.

In Los Angeles we get news reports of some freakish gang rape (.01%) every few weeks.  In a city of some millions of people, even if we get 999 banal one rapist / one woman / no weapon rapes, it is a drop in the bucket compared to our total population.  So the media doesnt report any of those.

You might want to do some snooping around in your local police blotter or call a local battered woman's shelter and find out what the statistics are local to where you live.

Additionally, the rapist is most commonly somebody known by the survivor.  as Jane Ace pointed out, "Familiarity Breeds Attempt."

With all this gun talk, I have a few gun stories to tell. One guy I knew bragged no one was robbing his house and getting out alive he and his dad have 13 guns. They went on vacation and someone broke in the house and took most of the guns. Story two a guy at a gas station I worked at when I was younger bragged no one was robbing him, because he had his gun in his gym bag with him. He got robbed at gun point 25 feet away from his gym bag and never got to defend himself. Your gun is no good if you dont have it ready to use.

I gun nut I used to go shooting with (nice guy, really) once came up to me at work and said:

"All your self defense stuff would be useless against my .45"

I looked back at him and asked:

"Where is your .45?"

He responded

"At home."

I told him to go get it and I would be happy to wait.

Fish, barrel, bang.

I've been feeling mainly useless these days. I spent a great deal of time picking up graduate degrees and different perspectives, only to discover that it's just me talking to me these days.

I've hit a point in my life where I see the rest of the world sees me only as a consumer. It's not a great place to find oneself, but I've been unable to break myself out of this model.

what makes someone "useless" ????

Gorillaz has this to say about it.

Artist: Gorillaz Lyrics
Song: Clint Eastwood Lyrics

I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine, in a bag
I'm useless,but not for long
The future is coming on
I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine, in a bag
I'm useless, but not for long
The future is coming on
It's coming on
It's coming on
It's coming on

Yeah... Ha Ha!
Finally someone let me out of my cage
Now, time for me is nothing cos I'm counting no age
Now I couldn't be there
Now you shouldn't be scared
I'm good at repairs
And I'm under each snare
Intangible
Bet you didn't think so I command you to
Panoramic view
Look I'll make it all manageable
Pick and choose
Sit and lose
All you different crews
Chicks and dudes
Who you think is really kickin' tunes?
Picture you gettin' down in a picture tube
Like you lit the fuse
You think it's fictional
Mystical? Maybe
Spiritual
Hearable
What appears in you is a clearer view cos you're too crazy
Lifeless
To know the definition for what life is
Priceless
For you because I put you on the hype shit
You like it?
Gunsmokin' righteous with one token
Psychic among those
Possess you with one go

I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine, in a bag
I'm useless,but not for long
The future is coming on
I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine, in a bag
I'm useless, but not for long
The future is coming on
It's coming on
It's coming on
It's coming on

The essence the basics
Without it you make it
Allow me to make this
Childlike in nature
Rhythm
You have it or you don't that's a fallacy
I'm in them
Every sprouting tree
Every child apiece
Every cloud you see
You see with your eyes
I see destruction and demise
Corruption in disguise
From this fuckin' enterprise
Now I'm sucking to your lies
Through Russ, though not his muscles but the percussion he provides
with me as a guide
But y'all can see me now cos you don't see with your eye
You perceive with your mind
That's the inner
So I'm gonna stick around with Russ and be a mentor
Bust a few rhymes so mother fuckers
Remember where the thought is
I brought all this
So you can survive when law is lawless
Feelings, sensations that you thought were dead
No squealing, remember
(that it's all in your head)

I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine, in a bag
I'm useless, but not for long
The future is coming on
I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad
I got sunshine, in a bag
I'm useless, but not for long
My future is coming on
It's coming on
It's coming on
It's coming on
It's coming on

(Repeat 4 times until:)

My future is coming on
It's coming on
It's coming on
My future

I had an epiphany today about what makes people useless.  In this case it is people who know something and fail to apply it to their own lives and situations.

"It is easier to get into something than to get out of it"
                                      Donald Rumsfeld, 2001

Kinda says it all, really.

i htink that could define more then half the people in the world.  Overweight people know they are overweight and should loose weight but fail to apply a diet to their lives.  Depressed people know they should be doing xyz but fail to because their depression prevents them, they even sometimes fail to take meds (failing to apply), etc

The failure to apply something we know will benefit us to our lives doesn't make us useless it makes us human.
