Howdy Mistoferin,

No actually there are several varieties of beer in Germany, They have your more traditionally know beer which is Pils, You've most likely heard a beer called a Pilsner beer... That is the light colored and light bodied beer, it is also sometime mix into what they call a Rattler(spelling on that is to be determined) that is a mix of beer with a lemondrink they have, it is excellent when you are eating and women tend to like it anytime....

I almost forgot the Weissens, there is Weissen and Heavy Weissen, those are in my mind, shoot offs of Pils, with a deeper body .....

Then the have Dunkels Beir, that is the typical dark beer and it is smooth, but it has a bite.

My favorite was Kellar Beir. kellar is the word for bottom, or the cellar, it was one the bottom of the beer keg and it may have little hops and such floating around, it is strong and has a much more intense bite to it.

They also have a Bock Bier and Dopple Bock, these are typically made only after the harvest season, more in the winter it seemed and are very smooth and tastey, poeple stand in long lines waiting for a first brewing, mm, mm, good.

There is also a beer discovered by accident when a Monistary that had beer stored and was a brewery burnt down, they saved some of the beer and it was found to have it's own unique and favorable taste...It's called Rauche Beer, which means smoked beer....it is an acquired taste, but I did like it as well.

Now I may have gotten the spelling wrong, if we have a German friend on here, perhaps they can help with my jibberish.

Thank you very much. I appreciate all that information and find it very interesting. We have a town close by here that is a small German town. It is well known to those visiting from Germany. They have several Germany breweries. My girlfriend who is from Germany tells me that the beers and many of the foods there are pretty authentic. I will look for the varieties you have mentioned and now will know a bit more about what they are. Thank you.

Some of the lighter brands I've bought in the US are Warsteiner, St Pauli Girl and Spaten -- they all seem to have a bit less hops than Becks. Another one that seems a bit "heavier" with malt but is still very good is Paulaner.

The biggest brewing disappointment I've had lately was learning that Coors had bought the importer who brought in Caffrey's Irish Ale and they were eliminating it -- that was the brew of the gods!

Maybe you could order it? I have had it and it is good. I also enjoy Smithwick's Irish Ale....it's not quite as heavy but I really like it.

What you need is Banks's Bitter, as brewed locally here. Its real ale and it comes in cans - though its much better from the pumps. A half of that will see anyone right.

Aside from the fact that I'm allergic to tomatoes, I really dont like the flavor of ketchup on fries/chips. Always preferred mayo even before the tomato allergy got worse and I had to cut out all-things-red almost entirely.

Edited to add - Yep, Harp lager! I'd also go for a Yleng Yleng (I know I'm spelling that wrong), but there arent too many other British beers I've tried yet. In my defense, however, I do prefer my beer only slightly cool or at room temperature.

Edited again to add - And thank you for the Kotayk distributer link. I'd look at it a long time ago, but they have different distributers now, so I'll try ringing them up up anew!

Well not on the fish, but certainly on the chips. Fish only needs a bit of lemon to enhance it. Really, you should try it some time.

Oh and...I don't drink any beer that has bitter right in the name.

Well, having it shipped special order from Ireland sounds like a lot of trouble to go to when I'd probably enjoy Smithwick's instead, so I think just I'll try that. Thanks for the recommendation!

Akin to the canuckistan who posted earlier, I will simply state this.

I live in Michigan. I don't HAVE to import beer to get good stuff. Between the offerings of Founders Brewery, Bells ( formerly the Kalamazoo Brewing Co.) and New Holland Brewery, I never have to even leave the state. Add that to the fact that at least five of my friends are homebrewers, and I'm golden.

I prefer my beer a bit darker than the mexican varieties. Founders makes a breakfast stout that is like unto a black hole. It's so dark that light cannot absorb it's event horizon. Then there's Dragon's Milk from New Holland brewery. An english black ale style which is kegged in used bourbon barrels. DAMN that's good stuff. I still prefer Hobgoblin for my black ale. But Dragon's Milk is a NICE change of pace.

*shudder* Nope, sorry. That's why I like being back in Michigan. When I order a fish fry, the server brings me a bottle of malt vinegar.

Mayo on pomme frittes is a very belgian thing. It's good on occassion. But much prefer the vinegar.

I live in Michigan too and I wasn't even aware of these breweries. I guess I better get busy.

Newcastle rocks, and Negro Modelo (dark), trader joes has some pretty good beer. I love it chilly after working in the hot sun out in my garden.

Dirty martini made with Sapphire or Tanq, absolutely.

If it's sweet or is made with vodka, it's a cocktail, not properly (in my world) a martini.

However, I will swerve for pomegranate and vodka with a splash of Cointreau. It's the "new" Cosmo.

Now I sound like a lush, eh?

I do believe that I've fallen head over liver for you.

MY "cosmo" was entitled The Jak Surprise at the club where I used to work. Mainly due to the face that unwary lil chickies(1) would make after imbibing. Not much is more shocking to the tongue when you're expecting something sweet and what splashes against the tastebuds is composed of campari, clementine vodka & tonic.

(1) Habitually, some girl would slide up to me and ask for a sip of the pale pink drink I usually had with me after 3am. Sucked to be them, eh?

No. I suggest you try Lowenbrau. Twenty years ago Miller bought the rights to the name and brewed it in the US and it was terrible, but its back to being German brewed and very good. If you wait until fall you can get their Oktoberfest version. I think it is very crisp and clean. If you can't find that Mexican brand you like, try Modelo. Negra Modelo is a dark version, but I've enjoyed the Especial or light varieties. My favorite Mexican is Dos Equis.

Molson is my favorite Canadian brand. If I have to drink US Beer, Rolling Rock gets the nod. When I'm at a bar and don't want to drink I'll order Coors or Coors light.

No brand loyalty at all and no beer expertise being claimed here. Whatever one of the imports mentioned that's on sale usually gets the nod. I just like something to drink it cold the pool; which you aren't supposed to do with any good European brewed beer. Drinking beer in Europe at any good bar is like going to Baskin Robins for ice cream - there are no 'bad' brands or flavors; even the locally brewed Bud tastes different.

I seem to remember it has something to do with the process. In the US they are required to do some form or heat process that doesn't occur in Europe. There are a few bars in the US - mostly on the east coast, who keep the kegs in a cool dark cellar and serve it at 'European' temperature, but I think you still don't get the taste because of the process requirement.

I'll defer to the true experts as to tell you what the process is, or if there is any unique US process at all.
