I was wandering around Tokyo on a hot summer day when I spotted a vending machine for beer. I plugged in my yen and got a cold can of Kirin, Sapporo or Asahi (I can't remember) and just chugged it down right there on the sidewalk. THAT was a good beer!

I seem to remember it has something to do with the process. In the US they are required to do some form or heat process that doesn't occur in Europe. There are a few bars in the US - mostly on the east coast, who keep the kegs in a cool dark cellar and serve it at 'European' temperature, but I think you still don't get the taste because of the process requirement.

I'll defer to the true experts as to tell you what the process is, or if there is any unique US process at all.

#&@(#&*$ Louis Pasteur!

Pasteurization, heating liquids to destroy undesireable organisms, is the culprit.  It changes the character, texture and depth of a good bier.  Or a bad one.
Ok, ok...not all new-fangled ideas are bad.  Pasteurization kills off pathogens that are bad, bad, bad.  It's been used for 150 years or so and I'm sure someone can quantify the number of lives that have been saved.

It's harder to purchase unpasteurized milk than to find someone sneaking in unpasteurized beir from abroad.  I have to get milk through an organic co-op at midnight in an alley behind a bowling alley.

But it's worth it to make homemade mozzarella to compliment the tomatoes and basil from my garden.

Akin to the canuckistan who posted earlier,  I will simply state this.

I live in Michigan.  I don't HAVE to import beer to get good stuff.  Between the offerings of Founders Brewery,  Bells ( formerly the Kalamazoo Brewing Co.) and New Holland Brewery,  I never have to even leave the state.  Add that to the fact that at least five of my friends are homebrewers,  and I'm golden.

I prefer my beer a bit darker than the mexican varieties.  Founders makes a breakfast stout that is like unto a black hole.  It's so dark that light cannot absorb it's event horizon.  Then there's Dragon's Milk from New Holland brewery.  An english black ale style which is kegged in used bourbon barrels.  DAMN that's good stuff.  I still prefer Hobgoblin for my black ale.  But Dragon's Milk is a NICE change of pace.

I am in complete agreement with RazorJAK....I rarely puchase imports...aside for some Belgians and a few Baltic Porters...and an occasional Stella....Otherwise I'm pretty much a hop head....Although I dig my beer like my women.....Brown and tasty...lol.....a kick ass stout...coffee, barrel aged....Oh momma!!...You have some kick ass breweries in Michigan....I provided a couple of links which should keep you busy and drunk for quite some time.....You might want to consider dabbling in homebrewing...Just bottled a kick ass java stout....Gotta try that mead recipe....

Dark Horse is another very tiny and tasty brewery that is worth checking out.

Three Floyd's in Indiana sends there stuff up to Michigan...Alpha king...Hoppy tasty....I'm getting hard over here.
Dark Lord is their kick ass stout...Hard to find....So many tasty beverages soooo little time....The downside to drinking these tasty concoctions is that the average alcohol content of these beers often approaches 7-10% or more....Drink with care or you could find yourself Domidonged in nothing flat...Enjoy!!!

So many new beers to try, so little time. It's a tough job but somebody's gotta do it.

She ain't Northern, DG - she's a Welsh lass......which is a shame for her, and although she didn't realise this before we met, she does now.

No offence intended to your beer palate, but I wouldn't use stella to wash my camel's bollocks. It's muck. For my money, all that German/Belgian/French stuff is muck. Seriously, it ain't even beer. It's just gas and chemicals. Over here, the drunks and under-16s drink it to get out of their minds as quickly as possible.

There is a very good reason why we're a conservative crowd when it comes to beer - it works well, and if it ain't broken etc. The problem with that site is that it's a list of well known/widely sold beers, so the likes of Sam Smiths and Fullers breweries feature heavily. There are villages all over the North of England (and the South) which brew their own beer, and people outside a 5 miles radius have never heard of that village's beer, so they wouldn't make any list. They're the quality English beers.

If you're ever in England, rent a barge and go sailing up canals in the North of England. There's loads of pubs and inns dotted along the canals at which you can stop off for a beer, and you'll drink beers that will never make any list because no one has heard of them. Buy loads of different English cheeses so you can taste a different cheese with a different beer, and see how they compliment each other.......exciting lot ain't we :-)  I'd recommend Lancashire and Yorkshire. Start at Liverpool and go sailing all the way past Leeds, stopping off at pubs along the way and getting pissed right up to the eyeballs on the local brews. The women are as game as they come up North, DG, so you'll be right. Pick me up at Manchester, along the way, and I'll join you for a beer or two!

Is that what you drink with your chips and mayo? You guys need lessons I swear!...lol.

Personally I prefer a Harp with my fish 'n chips w/ mayo...but that's me.

I would just like to say at this point that no self-respecting Englishman would go anywhere near mayonaisse - especially with fish and chips. It's those continental European types who like to smother everything in mayo - peasants the lot of 'em. We have our own sauces.

This thread has helped me make up my mind that I need to build a wall 'round England to keep the world out - particularly French influence, and the Germans. I'm withdrawing our membership of the EU, too.

I've been crafting mead for ... far too long.  In fact,  I've got a small batch of strawberry mead as we're speaking.  It should be ready by next spring.
