I'm not going into the whole scam idea either way.

I'm merely saying Ipetitions.com is a valid petition website period.
I get regular e-mail/political for certain petitions all of the time.

If you don't remember the guy with the heart transplant....they also posted something similar earlier on. Nobody thought that was a scam.

And if the geography is a problem since she's in Cal and you're in Canada, then show your compassion by volunteering at a hospice or something. But don't act like such a do-gooder because of the 5 minutes you've spent behind your keyboard trying to get everyone else involved.

Without all the harsh words happypervert...that is excellent advice everyone here should take to heart! I work at a hospice and there's nothing more important to those who are facing death to have someone there for a little comfort, or even a quick hello. Many die alone because their families cant cope with watching them die, or just plain dont have time for them, or they have no family left living. There's no greater gift in the world than a smile and a warm heart!

Petition aside, Someone who's opinion I respect mentioned that insurance companies don't pay attention to petitions. Whether they do or not... here's a suggestion...

Has anyone, friends family, in her area started or attempted some fundraisers? BBQ's? We get these locally, and they tend to raise quite a bit of money. In any regard/..... it helps out.

edited to add the following: to the insurance companies paying attention.... it seems likely they would not. This is unfortuante... but likely true. That's why Ellissa ins. company is proceeding the way they are. If they had compasion for stuff like that.... they'd pay the bill.

Signing the petition won't, as far as I can see, hurt you...if you want to sign it. If you have to feel guitly.. or get upset because you didn't didn't it.... look to yourself for those answers, at why you feel defensive... not to others.

Personally I don't feel guilty or upset or much of anything over this, but I think others on this board are TRYING to make people feel guilty or upset for having good critical thinking skills, and not just doing what it is they want them to do. And that's wrong, that's not free consent.

I must be missing something here...EmeraldSlave you keep mentioning "free concent", what exactly do you mean by that? I've always thought concent meant, harmony or agreement, consistency,or together.....
"Free concept" means a notion or idea, thought or opinion and would be more fitting.

Please dont take my question with offence or think I'm trying to provoke something here, I am just curious if "free concent" has a different meaning here

I've not read where any are pressuring people to sign the petition. They've given there view, and opinions. On both the merits of signing, and opinions who does and doesn't. But if someone is not looking for insult, often times... you aren't going to find it. Unless it's pathetically overt.

Maybe it's just that no one, but obviously my owner.. as I have given over to him my free consent.. can take that away from me, nor make me do something I don't want to. Period. Their words can't hurt me, and they can only influence me if I allow them too.

I just don't look for getting bent over something, just for contraversy. And whether you have or have not... I don't care. I have seen where you seem, in my Master's words, like to poke the tiger... that's not a accusation by the way, it's an observation. And not meant to insult you. It's just what it looks like.

Free consent means no negative irrelevent consequences in making your choice.

A person being told "Do this or you will burn in hell" is not being offered free consent.

All choices have consequences, but specific punishments or negative reactions which have nothing to do with the choice itself is wrong.

In this case, not signing the petition means one less signature and the person goes about their day- except that some people on this board are trying to say that if you don't sign then you should feel bad, that it means you don't care about others and just generally trying to drive guilty feelings...which have nothing to do with the choice itself.

I had some things I wanted to say. Though in starting this, and erasing... the whole nine yards... I thought better, and am simply realizing. Those who wish to, will. Those who don't won't.

But if you don't want to.... good grief... why make such a fuss?
Someone is trying to help out a dying friend. In that situation... they are very emotional. Give 'em a break. In times like that, a person is not at their most rational, and will become desperate to help... in whatever capacity they can.
I'm all for helping in hospices, and the like... but that's not going to help someone you call friend, or family. It helps the person you are with in the hospice and whatnot. Which is definately a great thing to do. But bottom line... it's not your friend, or family member. I lost a grandparent while living in Germany... does it make me silly, or stupid for having done what I could from over there? This is in relation to the person making the comment about Ellissa being in Cali, and the OP in Canada. People move, travel.... brings them closer and farther apart. It has nothing to do with the connection of friendship.

Mandalin, thats to sad for words, I have been to 3 funerals in 5 months my aunt passed away in late january in her sleep thank god, 2 weeks later her dog died and 4 months later her husband followed...and inbetween that time it was Nana's funeral...my uncle was alone only cause all his kids lived 5 hours away....my cousins had just gone home 2 days earlier after spreading their moms Ashes and had to go back right away...its really no fun to have family reunions in the wake of a funeral...family should make time for each other while they are alive and not see eachother for weddings and funerals....*sighs*

Sheesh, if I had seen this post I would have put the 2 reply's together...that was well written Tempestspet I think what we are disturbed about is people here think its a scam when there was nothing requested but a signature, not blood not sweat not tears an most of all nobody ever asked for money...if someone had asked for money in the original message then ok I see the point where it "could" be considered a scam....as a matter of fact the woman in questions has refused to take money when offered...I dunno shrugs maybe its just my good heart...I dont like to see good people suffer and not even have any kind of fighting chance.

I couldnt agree more LadyTiger! Tempestspet your reply has me in aww...your words say it all for this tragic situation. Desperation. When your loved ones are seriously ill and still have a fighting chance at life, but death has been chosen to be your fate, because of a hospital bill for medical products(not the procedure) that probably does not cost the hospital over $500. Sad that this stands in their way to live in this day and age.

This is an "in general" post and is not directed at anyone specific.

Perhaps it is different in different areas, but I know that around here the hospital cannot deny you treatment that you need because you don't have the money up front and your health coverage (if any) won't cover it. If you need the treament/surgery/medication/whatever, they have to give it to you and they will bill you later. As long as you are attempting to pay it back ($5 a week counts) they can't even send bill collectors after you. I went to have stitches in my forehead and spent about 2 years paying the $700 bill, it doesn't matter how long it takes as long as you are trying.
Like I said, it may not be the same everywhere, but that's how it is around here. And then, she could have what she needs to have, you could keep doing your thing with the petition and maybe after a time the company will come around, or maybe not. Either way, if the procedure would truely save her life, isn't it worth it? I mean, if someone told me "come up with $25,000 or you are going to die of cancer" that kind of sounds like a bargin and I would do it, most people don't have the luxery of such a cheap treatment.
I am not trying to downplay the perdicament, but honestly, as long as she doesn't mind getting bills from the hospital for the rest of her days then she should just go for it.

The BBQs and things are a wonderful idea. There is a woman that I work with whose young son has cancer and she recently had a benefit dinner and auction and raised over $5000 in one night.

The same potition has been going around yahoo mails too. I got the same plea just diffrently worded from someone in a yahoo bdsm group.

Besides all the humble jumble, i agree. Go SIGN the darn thing. Em, terrible as this may sound, i think it says alot about people and unfortunetly, it says it alot about the world. And no i'm not suprised. Really, if you're worried, its not all that hard to "check" things out, to make sure the site is legit and so on. Try for one instance to put yourself in the ladies shoes. Whether you believe it real or not, switch roles and look at it from the other side of things.

but then of course, WE all know what people are like. First and foremost, if they're not getting something out of it, they could really care less.
