This thread has inspired me to go off on a rant here. I’m probably going to get one hell of a flaming for this but eh…I really don’t care.
The SCA (and by extension the gorians) crowd have been the scourge of the BDSM community since the early or mid 1990’s and I personally know of three fetish clubs that were forced to close their doors as a result these people. Perfectly good fetish/Goth/Industrial clubs lost their main patronage because when these people started showing up dressed up like Robins Merry Men no one wanted to be in the same bar with the likes of them.
I remember the first time I ran into a group of SCAers at a Fetish club. Two fat, middle-aged graying dufuses, one with a beard and bifocals, wearing a hooded cloak and carrying a walking stick and the other dressed like a character out of a Shakespeare play. The girl they were with, an obscenely fat girl in her early 20’s with stringy grease laden hair, yellowing picket fence teeth and horrible acne, was wearing some green fairy dress not unlike something Stevie Nicks would wear. She was stomping around the dance floor fluttering her dress (ala Ms. Nicks) with all the grace of a three legged bull elephant stuck in the mud. I guess she decided not enough people were watching her so she moved her ‘dance’ into the bar where she would bust through conversation circles, ran into the guys playing pool and just annoyed the hell out of everyone.
I was standing at the bar with a friend (who was a very in-your-face kind of guy) watching this lard ass. When she ‘fluttered’ by my friend blurted out “What the fuck are you doing?” She stopped, took a second to catch her breath and said “I’m an elfin maiden”. *stunned silence*….”What the fuck…huh?!” my friend yelled. She paused, rolled her eyes and repeated herself but as she did she pulled her hair behind her ear to reveal the prosthetic Mr. Spock Vulcan ear she glued on. “I’m an elfin maiden *giggle*” and away she went. I happened to look over at her middle-aged beaus and they were looking back at me with these shit-eating grins as if to say “yea…were taping that ass”. I just shuttered and ordered another Vodka. Within a year a quarter of this clubs crowd were people like these so the rest of us stopped going and the club closed some time later.
Now I’m not saying that all SCAers are exactly like the people described above, but I have never met one who didn’t have similar traits. I mean Christ, I’ve seen several times SCAers at these clubs rolling multi-sided dice to decide who gets to do what to who, they’re just silly and need to grow the fuck up.
I really wish there was some way to draw a better line of distinction between the fetishists and the SCAers. They’re not into BDSM as much as they’re into ‘Fantasy role play sex’.
