I know for a fact that in Scottsdale, AZ, the cops LOVE to nail people who park in handicapped zones......all it takes is one call to the PD, and they will try to get there when they can.....I know they also swing thru parking lots randomly just to check.

Sure, those tickets mean a BUNDLE of free money for the municipality... they probably have quotas.

i've always wondered why people get massively wound about violating a handicapped parking space, but not a handicapped toilet stall. After all, usually the need to use the toilet is a lot more urgent than the need to park a car...[&:]

soultoshare -> RE: Handicap Parking spot rant (7/10/2007 5:52:08 PM)

Dave,
the whole quota thing is an urban myth.....but with the amount of offenders out there, it's like shooting fish in a barrel!  And yes, they do generate a fair amount of revenue for a city....but again, as long as there are offenders out there, then there are tickets waiting to be written!  As far as I'm concerned, you take the chance, you pay the price.

Is that something issued by the state? Here in Michigan you are not allowed to park in a handicapped parking spot, even with a state issued DAV plate, unless your disability is certified to impair your ability to walk.

not taking anything away from VETs, but i think they should do that in every state. they should also crack down on those people that aren't physically disabled, take away their placards/plates. It's not fair that just about anyone can get one...with the right doctor.

soultoshare -> RE: Handicap Parking spot rant (7/10/2007 6:02:54 PM)

Just on a side note, not to hijack...but since when did being pregnant mean a parking spot reserved for you?  And getting paid disablilty when you take maternity leave to have said child????  That's a choice, NOT a disablility.....I did the walk in the parking lot, used my accrued time for maternity leave.....Sorry, Lotus....just another part of the rant, I guess.  I'm with you all the way.....I'm one of those that call in the idjit in the HC spot!  Having friends on departments, I can even call them directly and snitch the lazy SOB's out!  As you said.....AHHHHHHH-THE POWER!

Erm. The only physical disability are those that are visible?

I had my tag for a month before I finally used it. I hate everything about it. That I need it, that others see that I need it. I'm grateful as hell that I didn't have to pay extra for it. I'm grateful as hell that I can even drive & parking close makes that so much easier. Heh I hate that I can't park very far away from door dingers dang it!

Yup I see the motorcycles parked in the blue lanes, and tons of folks waiting for someone to just run in for an item but in my mind karma is a bitch. If you take something away that you shouldn't do (parking in handicapped for convenience only) then the day will come when it happens to you. Oh, general 'you'.

My doctor is the 'right doctor' and understood that I just couldn't do it without that blue placard.

I went down to the hospital to visit my doc today.  I have a HC conversion van I use that needs the "van accessible" type of spot.  I drove for 15 minutes around the vast lot looking for an open hcvan space.  No less than 5 cars in a ROW of  HC spaces had no identification showing they were entitled to the spots.  Security was cruising and I pointed it out for him to take car of the problem.  Yeah- right.  There was a plethora of regular parking spaces open and  actually closer than the HC spots to the hospital.

In Arizona they have just  upped the fine from $200 to $250 for illegal parking and $500 for a bogus placard.  What's really great is that there is also a dedicated phone line to report the idiots that park there and think they can get away with it.  An anonymous phone call made and all they want is the plate number and the location.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh the POWER!

So those coming to AZ- beware.  We are now "armed" and dangerous.  If you feel entitled to take a handicapped spot you are not entitled to.. ask yourself  "Do you feel lucky....Punk?"  Because I'm going to be a real bitch about it and it's gonna cost you.

And one last thing.. pray to God you never NEED an HC parking spot.

Go get'em. Few things piss me off worse than some lazy, thoughtless person taking a spot they don't need.

First, you have to be adjudicated as disabled by the respective service that you're in.
Then you enter the Veteran's Administration system or are retired by your respective branch of the military.
After that you join the Disabled American Veterans org.
Then, they check your Military or Veterans records or both.
Only then can you get one of those stickers.
You have to order them at no charge after you give them your ss number.
It involves months of paperwork and I think only about 1 million out of 300 million people in the country are entitled to have them on their vehicles.
Not at all like getting one from your doctor.
I haven't had any problems and I've never heard of the Police having any problems honoring them.
Years ago when I lived in N.H. a lady evidently didn't see my sticker and questioned my right to be parked in a handicapped zone.
I said to her, "there's a sticker on the back of my car."
She walked back and saw it and said, "Oh! I'm so sorry Sir!"
"I didn't see a handicapped plate." "I thought you were just being inconsiderate."
I said "oh, no problem."

P.S. unfortunately I think we'll be seeing more of those kind of stickers in the years ahead.

Serves the bastard right.  People had to wait inside a burning building while the Fire Department broke through some asshole's car windows just because he didn't care about blocking a hydrant?

I know the Handicapped Brigade will seethe and hiss, but I still consider blocking a hydrant a worse offense than parking in a handicapped spot.  Look, I agree that people who do it are shits, but with all the injustices in the world today, this is one issue I just can't get too riled up about.

I'm always amused by the fact that the fine for parking in a handicapped spot is at least three times as much as the fine for parking in front of a fire hydrant.

If handicapped people had the right to do this to a car illegaly parked in a marked space, perhaps the fines wouldn't be so high.

This may be a really stupid question but why are there lots of "regular" spaces closer to the hospital than the HC spots?  Every place I've ever noticed HC spots, they are the absolute closest to the building.  Why put them further away than any regular ones?  Just wondering...........luci

Nikolette -> RE: Handicap Parking spot rant (7/10/2007 7:34:21 PM)

I know that not ALL people who park in those spots are doing for decent reasons--- but my uncle who was in a work related accident and broke his back and could hardly walk used to use handicapped spots. His work was resistant about documenting his injury and he didn't have insurance and couldn't get a handicapped parking permit (or whatever) for about three months into his illness. So since I don't know each person's individual reasons for doing stuff like that, I try not to judge them too harshly. And where I come from there are generally plenty of open handicapped parking spaces everywhere.

Some people mentiond being totally irate at people who let someone sit in the firelane and wait for people to get in an out. I'll admit I've done that a few times. It wasn't about being lazy for me, it was about being in a major rush and needing to get in and get out super fast. Also I used to pull up there and wait for my elderly grandma (who did have a handicapped parking permit) who had congestive heart failure and walking to even the handicapped parking spots made her really really weak and short of breath. So... yet again... I try not to judge those people. When I notice people doing that, its USUALLY for what seems like an elderly spouse, or someone in a super rush. They are out of the way generally and left the person in the car to move it in case of an emergency, so it doesn't really bother me when they do.

Situations don't always APPEAR to be what they REALLY are. But of course... some people obviously DO take advantage of the handicapped spots. I just wanted to offer a friendly reminder of the other side of the picture.

I guess that still doesn't really answer what I was wondering about. My father is a DAV. But his disability does not impair his ability to walk, so therefore, while he is certified as disabled by the military, he can not use that to park in handicapped spaces.

Misto, I don't know how they do things up there but if he needs a handicapped plate he should submit his V.A. paperwork to the State of Michigan Dept of Motor Vehicles Dept.
They usually will go with the V.A. doctor's opinions and issue a
"Handicapped" or "Disabled Veteran" plate.
If he has an official "DAV" sticker on his vehicle he really doesn't need a special lisense plate.
If he has no problem with walking why would he even want to park in a handicapped space?
I can park in those spaces but like I said I don't unless I'm in a lot of pain. Why use it if you don't need it?

winterlight -> RE: Handicap Parking spot rant (7/10/2007 7:54:56 PM)

If u are handicapped and its verified by your Doc go for it. Who wants to have to use them? There are people with physical handicaps and those with hidden ones. You cannot see a bad heart problem or something along that line. I know of ppl that get dirty looks because they have the placard but no visible sign of disability.
If u really need one than i am all for it. If you don't well that is just wrong. The Dr and u are abusing the system.

LotusSong -> RE: Handicap Parking spot rant (7/10/2007 7:59:45 PM)

No, Michael, the number is just for Phoenix and the outlying areas.  Call your local police department and ask if there is a number you can call in this situation.  I know we also have a "non-emergency" number for our police dept.

I'll be glad to bash an offenders windows in then... I mean, how long does it take?

I shall repeat LAM (just for you), pray you never NEED a handicap spot.

popeye:
It appears that what she is saying is that just because one has a DAV sticker on their car they are not necessarily entitled to park in a disabled persons parking space.  Not all DAV have walking disabilities.  a person missing a few fingers or a hand or an ear would be DAV but not entitled to use the handicapped parking space.  There are even some who have emotional or mental disabilities.

It's strange.  I've noticed the new buildings' parking lots seem to have the HC spots back a bit further than they used to.  Like they may be at the end  of the line but a few rows farther away from the door.

I always use the handicapped stall, I need the rail to help me get up with a bad knee and bad hip.  Someone once told me that was reserved for wheelchairs as I limped off. At home we have a riser on the seat.

My mom had to use a wheel chair the last few years of her life.  Not full time...she could walk ten or twenty feet but much farther than that and she would need her chair.  She and her wheel chair buds devised a plan to deal with people like you describe.  They had these posters made up (about note book size) and the poster went into great detail about how what the offender was doing was not only illegal but a royal pain in the ass.  They would then attach them to the windshield of the offenders car.  I do not know where they found the adhesive that was on them but the only way you could get them off was with a razor blade and a ton of elbow grease.  Of course being that size it was pretty difficult to drive with it in place.  Yeah my mom had a mean streak in her.

MstrssScarlet -> RE: Handicap Parking spot rant (7/10/2007 8:31:37 PM)

I am one of those people who doesn't look handicapped and don't hurt every day.  When I'm feeling ok, I'm happy to walk the distance.
One day I was hurting pretty bad and used my disabled placard.  I came out of the store with a grocery cart and looked around for a place to put it once I had unloaded it.  I didn't see anything close by, so I left it near the front of my car and started to get in to leave.  As I did, some arrogant bastard going into the store started yelling at me.  He said something about 'We need more people like you- taking up handicap spaces and then too lazy to put your cart away".  His girlfriend was obviously embarrassed because she kind of ducked her head and never looked at me.  I was so taken aback that I just yelled "What the hell's your problem?".  By then he was already walking into the store.  If he hadn't been such a coward by waiting until the last minute to yell at me (hoping to embarrass me in front of an audience I would guess), I would have shown him my handicap placard.  The SOB should have seen it on his own - it's one of those that hangs from the rear view mirror.  I was offered the license plate, but I prefer the card so I can hide it when I'm not using it.  As Lotus has already said, hope you never need one!  It took me months to finally work up the nerve to ask for one and I certainly don't use it unless I have to.
