He does not require (or want) a handicapped plate for an arm injury. He has a DAV license plate, but that does not enable one to park in a handicapped spot unless your disability specifically affects your ability to walk. The reason why I was asking about the sticker is because my Mother is disabled with congestive heart failure and COPD. She does have a handicapped placard. I asked about the sticker because if it legally allows you to use handicapped parking, then they would not have to pay the extra costs for the placard. She does not drive and so my Father's vehicle is the one she is always in. Erin, it sounds as if the laws in this area are totally different up there in Michigan from other states. Probably the best thing for you to do is to go to the DMV in Michigan and ask (them). As for the DAV stickers I had to sign a medical release of info form for the DAV to access my V.A. medical records to be able to get my sticker. I think going through your state DMV is MUCH easier than all the U.S. govt paperwork I had to do! It sounds like all you have to do in "civland" is get a letter from your dr. and take it to the DMV.

I am quite surprised at the number of complaints by people saying that disabled spaces are abused in the US. I found during my trips there that the problem is far less than it is in the UK. Here people have no regard for the spaces at all. All supermarkets here have disabled spaces but as these are effectively on private land there are no fines for people that abuse them. The supermarket will also not do anything about these people as they are afraid of losing customers. Anyone who is so desperate to park in one of these spaces is welcome to have my disability (and the 2 years in hospital that went with it). Having a permit to park in these spaces is not some great "perk" it is a necessity for those with a permit..

well- ppl may judge- thats life. they say there is nothing wrong with me....i hardly ever go out on bad days. i try to let the spot for someone worse off... also- US communities are car centric. try to walk or bike anywhere. you get run over. urban planners really goofed.

you must have permit on your car thats the law. my ex doesnt look like he needs to park close to the entrance , but he gets tired quickly and his MS might exarcebate at any time. if you need one get one. or else you will not only get a funny look from me you will hear some choice words. will also call the cops...

one day- i parked in a disabled space- i had just come from my mechanic- and as a rule- i dont let the placard in the car when it is in the shop. a burger king worker hobbled out to tell me i was not to be there w/o a placard. i did not have it on my person or car- so i moved the car. i pittied the poor guy. he must have had a simmilliar walk of life to me...but he is forced to work. it was shortly after that i got the specific license plate. i hesitated as i did not want other drivers to "know"- in the event of road rage. How did i solve that? my lovely NRA stickers!!!!! I noticed thugs tend to leave cars alone that display such. :-) Laws do vary from state to state. In Chicago- the tourist areas have spaces but not the neighborhoods. Here in Pennsylvania- you can ask teh city to denote a space to be disabled in front of a house you own. but there can not be 2 in a row. In California- im told you dont have to pay meters. Here in PA, you must intially pay the meter- BUT- you are afforded 1 extra hour for free, before a ticket can be issued. Many dont know this. Some stores now place the spaces away from teh door- but near a ramp- so a wheel chair would want it...but not someone in a hurry,

As far as invisible disabilities: that is very true and I'm very aware of them What pisses me off, and the ones I would report, are those vehicles parked in their spots with absolutely no HC indication. Those are the obvious ones.

Now if I see a giggling group of teenie boppers sprinting out of a car at the mall parked in a handicapped spot and they have a placard.. I might report it to see if the registration number on the placard is ligit. If not- game over.

My mother has a heart condition and can't walk long distances, otherwise she looks perfectly healthy, even with the placard those.. "I'm more disabled then you, you should lose a leg blah blah" types make me sick. Yes you are visibly disabled.. want a cookie? Just because it is not visible does not mean it is not valid. Sometimes when we go out i would love to throw something large and heavy at those jackasses who feel the need to say something to my mother just because they cannot see, handicapped or not. grumbles.. about ignorant, militant, judgemental assholes To many take bieng handicapped as an excuse for bieng obnoxious.

Do you just patrol the lots looking for people to bust? You seem entirely too consumed by this. That's not healthy. What will you do if the day should come that no one parks in handi-spaces that doesn't need them? What 'battle' will you fight then? Another thing I wonder about is. . . do you feel being in that chair just entitles you to special treatment? I read what you said about helping someone out of their car and in the same breath you mention that you're stubborn and wouldn't ask. Soooo what? Because we have workings legs, we're just supposed to run up to any car 'legally' parked in one of those spaces to see if we can help a person who may or may not even want our help? Yeah I can see that going over really well. Unless I'm mistaken, part of being in a wheelchair is learning to be as self-reliant as those who aren't and to learn to take care of yourself. You have a lift van, a POWER chair and use probably a 10th of the energy it takes a walking person to get into the same building. I know it must suck to have to be in a chair, but damn, sometimes I have to say I'd rather just have a seat and let a powered piece of equipment do the work for me. That's one of the reasons man invented cars. We got tired of walking everywhere. Remember: just because some people can walk, doesn't make them the enemy. You strike me as someone who really needs to come to terms with your disability and stop looking for confrontation where ever it may or may not exist. Yeah, some lazy assholes park in handi-spaces. It happens. We as a people are becoming far more lazy and that's just the way it is. There should not be a war over spaces though. It's certainly not worth a 4-page rant where you sit there and judge who should and should not take up one of your precious spaces. It's not your concern who deserves a plaquard and who doesn't. Maybe they forgot it, maybe they lost it. Who's to say? Are you going to honestly tell me that if you saw some old granny hobbling and wheezing into a store from a car with no sticker that you would report her because clearly she must not need the space if she has no sticker? Give me a break.

Well, my father is walking heavily on two canes these days and I more than understand the frustration. However, just to point out... Back after I had my children, I was suffering from some significant back pain (things were out of whack from the pregnancies). I went to the chiropractor and after he x-rayed my back, he brought the x-rays in saying "I know why you're having such difficulties." and showed me my x-ray with the long ago healed but once broken flange on one of my vertebrae. And yes, I remember when I was a teen and slipped and fell off our dock, hitting my back as I went down, on the edge before falling into the water. I could barely walk for weeks, but kids are kids and since I was walking, my parents didn't think anything more about it at the time. It wasn't until I was 37 that I found out why. When I told my parents what the dr had found, both of them immediately knew when it'd happened. We all said "I bet it was that day you/I fell on the dock!!" So it IS possible to break your back, not go to the doctor's for it AND still recover. So just pointing out one CAN break one's back, not go to the doctors and NOT have to be incapacitated for 3 months or more. juliet

to the op i was my moms driver for the last 10 years of her life.......when she was with me, we used her car or took the plaquard with us in mine......we never had any problems finding a spot...and sometimes i would just drop her off at the curb, and sit there until she returned......because if she was determined for it to be done that way......thats what happened....... had there ever arisen an emergency, i could have driven away immediately, and if it didnt bother the county cops in the parking lot, im not going to worry about doing that......ive done that too when my son ran in to get something quickly....... i am sorry youre disabled in some ways, but your brain seems to work fine....why not start an awareness campaign or something......take all this energy and put it to some use that might make a difference and get to a bigger audience....
