ORIGINAL: Mercnbeth Anyway... she says the best place to "rescue" pets is from pet stores. she hates them, especially the majority of those which are not affiliated with a national chain. They don't take care of their animals. The two we had were rescued from a pet store. she couldn't bear to see them suffer, and what can I say - I guess I'm not as much a hard-ass as I portray. As beth anticipated both dogs were in bad shape. Both had a bad case of worms and one had an undescended testicle. The last picks of the liter is beth's guess. she says that the pets in pounds and places like the ASPCA and other rescue groups who don't euthanize don't need rescuing as much as those in the pet stores. The groups provide much better care than do the stores. I understand the desire to want to rescue the puppies from pet stores. Unfortunately, each time a person purchases a puppy from a pet store something bad happens....... the message is sent that this type of puppy is profitable, so more are produced. They are produced at huge, commercial puppy mills or in some cases, by smaller, local puppy mills. When the AKC (American Kennel Club) made it more difficult for puppy millers, the millers responded by creating their own registries so the new owner would get a shiny piece of paper declaring their dog a (fill in the blank). There are some lovely, shiny puppy mill facilities that come across as wonderful and caring, but they are all about the money. They just put two dogs together and make puppies, and will breed their bitches until they drop dead. Most puppy mills are horrible places that are nothing more than hell on earth for the dogs who end up there. Just google puppy mills and you'll get plenty of info, but the fact is that although you may save one puppy by buying it from a pet store, you are also causing more to be produced. If you seek a purebred puppy, then seek out a reputable breeder. Google the parent breed club for that breed. (Example is my breed is the Akita and the parent club is The Akita Club of America - www.akitaclub.org of which I am a member) and they should be able to point you towards reputable breeders in your area. Also, every breed of dog has individuals and/or groups who do breed rescue. They work tirelessly to try and find homes for abused, abandoned, neglected and orphaned dogs. Most rescue groups are overwhelmed with too many dogs/puppies and not enough homes, so adopting from a rescue group gives a home to an orphan, and frees up space for another to be rescued. Anyway, didn't mean to ramble but wanted to explain one of many reasons why it isn't a good idea to buy from pet stores...... As to my furry baby, he's a 137 lb Akita named Thunder. We're a package deal. [:)]
