I understand the desire to want to rescue the puppies from pet stores. Unfortunately, each time a person purchases a puppy from a pet store something bad happens....... the message is sent that this type of puppy is profitable, so more are produced. They are produced at huge, commercial puppy mills or in some cases, by smaller, local puppy mills.

it is also my understanding that the pet stores do euthanize the puppies & kittens when they start to get larger & less cute if they aren't sold...it would be wonderful if there was a way to rescue them from the euthanasia without promoting more breeding & euthanasia & on & on & on...meanwhile as you pointed out, the rescue organizations are full to bursting & some breeds can't be placed very easily, such as pit bulls...a woman abandoned a very sweet, loving pit bull at my home & i was unable to keep her...i called every rescue organization & shelter that i could find & finally made a connection with a man in South Dakota who wanted her...i put her & Spike into the car & drove there from Oregon...the man still keeps in touch now & again to tell me how wonderful Coco is doing & how happy she is living on his acreage & frolicking with the cattle--that's what they were bred to do...

the problem of pet overpopulation is vast & each little thing that us pet-lovers can do to alleviate the suffering is wonderful...one pet at a time.....

You might be able to spin into a yarn and knit with it.

i haven't looked it up recently, but there was a website where you could ship your loose pet hair to and they would spin it into yarn for you...seemed very interesting

as for our whole house hold count we have 5 dogs (3 males 2 females, described more earlier) (hehe we have half a pack of weiners...ya know hot dogs come in packages of 8...haha) 4 cats - 1 we got at 4 weeks when a small local pet shop gave her to us she was flea ridden and ant bitten...Mouse is 14 now and rules the house still...but i think she has authritis, is there cat glucosamine or something?...Angel and Demon are sisters we got at 4 weeks from the breeder (they are a siamese/rag doll mix)...the breeder had two cats give birth at the same time and one of them got sick so the other was feeding both litters, and i had picked out a kitten at 2 weeks (it was a couple of months after my other cat who was almost exactly the same age as me had to be put to sleep because by the time we found the cancer it was in her lungs...we would have done surgery and chemo but they said that they couldn't do anything to prolong her life so we took her home until she stopped eating and then let her go over the rainbow bridge) anyway, 2 weeks later, they called us, let us know about the mom cats and told us if we wanted our kitten to live we should come pick it up...when we got there they said if we could take care of it we could have another one of the kittens, no extra charge....and then there is Booger...we very litterally rescued Booger off the street...he was making a mad dash across an 8 lane underpass, under a highway...my mom got out of the car, stopped traffic and chased this little kitten down, some other people stopped and eventually he crawled up into a wheel well of a big pick up truck...the driver got out, donned a pair of gloves and pulled this hissing ball of fur and claws out and handed it to my mom...anyway we ended up taking him home..releasing him in my room...having to have a friend come over and help us corner/catch him and put him in a large kennel for a couple of weeks till he decided it was better to be friendly to these poeple than to be locked up 24/7...and thats the short story...Booger thinks he's a dog...but that could be because the other cats won't play with him but the two spotted weiners will...
wait thats not it...there is also Bird..who is a parakeet that keeps my mom company in her room...and Ziggy, the sulcata Tortise who lives in the dinning room, eats lots of green stuff, soaks in the kitchen every other night (in a baking dish none the less) aaaand makes cute little tortise tracks in the sand...(i ocassionally attempt to pet his head to see if he's still alive...he always pulls it inside the shell before i get there...not a responsive enough pet for me, but it works for my mom)...
i want a fish tank but my father thinks its bad luck to have live fish in the house...i don't know who keeps dead pet fish in the house, but whatever...i think it would be funny to have a wooden sign on the tank saying "Fishin' Hole"...

ok where is my off button...

My boyfriend and I love animals, and once we move into an actual D/s relationship, I am sure that love will carry over.  Currently I have a 17 year old red American Cocker and a 2 year old black and white cat, and he has a 15 year old Beagle.  When our lovely dogs go, I am sure we will get a dog and another cat (and I want to name one of them Ramen!)

We have 4 cats, 3 Devon Rex and 1 Tonkinese. We have bought them as gifts for each other, as we both love cats. You've all heard the expression "Dogs have Masters, cats have slaves."  Well, it's true. A lot of the time the cats decide who takes care of them (a Devon Rex that wants something is a force to be reckoned with) and Master is frequently Dommed by "his" cat Alice. Two of our Rexes are little subs who love to be spanked. Alice goes right off into subspace. People are amazed to see it. They look at us as if we are cruel until they realize that the cats are coming back for more, biting us when we STOP!

:))
LH

I can attest to that! The look on Alice's face when she goes off into subspace is priceless ... the cats were always a highlight at LH's parties!

Can't say i have been in the least disappointed. He is perfect (in personality, not necessarily to breed standard). He is now a 1 yr old Westie with personality plus who has impressed his vet and his trainer with his compassion and smarts. He is being trained as a therapy dog and is just the most relaxed, intelligent and adorable little guy ever!

Well of course, you got the best dog breed! OK, to qualify that remark, they got number 1 for the best small dog breed in Australia on a large survey. Interestingly, Maltese terriers - also small, white, fluffy terriers - scored worst! The difference is in the personality ... Westies are medium-sized personalities that happen to have been born into compact bodies. They are not snappy-yappy, they are happy, bouncy, friendly and yes, very compassionate. I'm on My 3rd and 4th Westies and it would be a tough decision to pick another breed now (though Master has a fascination with boxers and both of U/us think that Bichon frises are cute!).  Medically, the main risk of the breed is a skin allergy which one of O/our current ones has, means he is on a maintenance dose of prednisolone which may ultimately shorten his life span a bit (but that's preferable to him being driven crazy with itching so he pulls out all his hair and makes himself bleed!).

I was the one with the pets ... but Master fortunately loves animals (somehow not sure He'd have gotten to BE Master if He didn't) ... and they are now definitely HIS pets! The dogs adore Him, He has all the girls roll over and spread their legs for Him (Magic the westie girl AND MY CAT!) ... Magic spent last week "sad-sacking" because He was away. At least she deigned to eat the food I served ... He has voluntarily taken over all feeding AND cleaning up duties for the 3 pets. Even though He has severe allergy to fish, He feeds the cat and has even held a paper for her to throw up her fishy breakfast into! (I couldn't do that!). W/we had a terrible moment at the vet's a week ago when O/our nearly 19-y.o. cat had urinary problems ... the vet made a sweeping assumption based on her age and recommended putting her down! W/we said no, she's normally fine ... had a lot of expensive blood tests done and put her on antibiotics to deal with a UTI if that's what she had. This week, back to get the results ... she's been fine in between times ... and he had to eat humble pie! No signs of hyperthyroidism (common in elderly cats), no signs of cancer ... there was evidence of inflammation from infection ... and her kidneys are working at about 90% capacity! He was gobsmacked! So I'd say her 19th bday in 3 months is definitely on the cards and I'm hoping for her 20th too!

When I say the westies are compassionate, both of O/our dogs are very respectful of Swipe the cat (even though she doesn't really live up to her name any more). If she's on a chair, she keeps it ... which make for some interesting mid-air U turns! When it's bedtime, O/our boy westie, Teddy Bear, waits to see which bed the cat wants for the night ... his dog bed or her cat cushion. Whichever she chooses ... he gets on the other!

W/we have an understanding that any further animals come in by mutual agreement ... that stops either of U/us rashly adopting another (though W/we were both tempted by a pet store border collie pup who was so depressed when all his siblings got sold)! I don't get the impression pet stores here are as bad as those elsewhere and referred to in previous posts ... I've known lots of people buy from the pet stores and not have problems. They charge almost as much as breeders to dissuade the impulse buyer who may then fail to take responsibility. I have rescued dogs in the past from shelters with varying degrees of success ... Charlie Brown was an older mixed breed who was absolutely adorable and just so proud the first time I took him for a walk on his collar and leash, Jessie the Maltese cross had all the bad traits of a Maltese and got returned after 3 weeks as he was vicious to U/us all! The sub I am speaking to has 1 poodle and another pup on the way ... so it's as well W/we've half an acre as the family could potentially grow!

My mother was initially rather shocked that I was leaving My marriage and heading off with Master who is 15 years younger than Me (she doesn't know about the D/s but knew that He lived with us and He had been very kind and helpful to her many times over the 2.5 years). However the fact that He loves the animals and they clearly love Him, and her little sheltie Mandy (a notorious man-hater due to a former life) would roll over and spread her legs for Him (yep, another girl!), clinched it for her ... He MUST be a good guy! She also noted that Mandy hated My ex-hubby (and it was mutual!) ... so she figures I've definitely traded up! I reckon so too! Does anyone else believe in animal intuition when it comes to the nature of people?

Hubby hates cats and i love cats, and it's my job to take care of them and to keep them away from Him.  We tried living without cats for 2 years to make Him happy, but were overun with mice and rats. I guess He hates rodents more than cats because He allowed me to get two more cats after that.  We keep them outside in the daytime and in a separate part of the house that He doesn't use at night.

Today Valyraen and I were at a pet store, taking a break from errands. I fell in love with a cute dachshund puppy and attempted to talk Valyraen into letting us adopt of him. Before anyone says it: I've been thinking of getting a dog for a long time so this is not "I want a dog because it's cute while it's a tiny puppy" but just that I really connected with this particular puppy.

Rightly so, he reminded me that our house is too small, we already have two cats and two degus and our house is just not puppy-proof. We agreed that while we both want a dog, and in particular a puppy since I've never gotten a chance to raise one, this just isn't the right time. He also said that when it is the right time, he will give me equal input on choosing the dog and the breed.

I'm curious as to how other d/s couples handle the issue of pets, both obtaining and taking care of them. Valyraen and I feel that since both people have to take care of the animal, it needs to be an animal that we will both enjoy taking care of. Neither of us are allowed to get an animal without consulting the other one and we are both responsible for all the well-being of all the animals in the house.

My owner is fairly allergic to pets, but I have one really old (Himalayan) cat that I've had since I was a kid.  We don't live together, but we live pretty close by, so he's around almost every day.  What I do is that the cat isn't allowed on the top floor where my owner spends most of his time, the litter box is in the bathroom with the window that my owner doesn't tend to use, and I make sure that there isn't a lot of cat fur around in the areas the cat is allowed.

I think if my owner and I lived together, we'd probably have a dog (he likes dogs a lot) - but he knows I'm afraid of large dogs so we've talked before about medium sized, or the more gentle by nature breeds of dogs that I'm okay around that he'd probably get.  Dunno who'd take care of the dog, I'm guessing my owner would just tell me how that would be divided, though again because of his allergies I'd probably at least be responsible for making sure there isn't pet hair everywhere.

Shelter animals needs good homes.....I got my dog out of the paper before he made it to the shelter....he was part lab and part chow, and too smart for my own good!  My cats have always been of the "free to a good home" variety, current;y I have one barn cat and two garage sale kitties.  All of my family have gotten their pets either before they made it to the shelter, or from the shelter.  I did cop out and get an older dog, he was about 2 or so when I got him, had to put him down because he ended up with Cushing's disease, and his kidneys and liver failed on him.....it broke my heart to have to make the decision, and I stayed with him until it was over.  Even KB (my cat) was lost without him.  Hence the 2 other cats....

I agree with the opinions stated here....be VERY wary of bying a puppy from the pet store.  I know they need home, but puppy mills are far to prevalent to take the chance on getting a "defective" puppy.  Look for a reputable breeder, and in some shelters, if you are looking for a specific type dog, see if they will contact you if they get any....that's what my mom did, and less than 3 days later, they had the sweetest little baby!

BTW LaT, i call those little yappy dogs "cats in dog's clothing"!  I'm not big on the little pooches either.....they can be sneaky!  I'd turn my back on a rottie or sheperd before I would on a little dog.  Although, the only exception to that rule is for the little lhasa my aunt owns....her trailer caught on fire, and Frenchy saved her life...literally!  He has a place in everyone's home and hearts in our family.  He got her up with just enough time to grab a coat and jump out the bedroom window......the place was a total loss.

Aqua, good luck with whatever you choose.....or rather, what chooses you!

meticulousgirl -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/12/2007 11:06:51 AM)

i agree with whoever said not to buy a pet from a pet store, i use to work in one when i was a teenager and i see how the store managers and employees treat those poor animals.  It's really really sad, they aren't cared for the majority of them are sick, and they charge double the price than you would pay at the shelter or from a breeder.

When it comes to animals my Owner doesn't have any, we dont live together however when i first moved to GA my cat went to stay with my Owner, they got attached to one another and now my cat isn't happy unless he's at my Owners so....my cat goes there regularly because my Owner has "visitation rights" lol....it's the funniest thing.

Celeste43 -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/12/2007 2:01:49 PM)

He's always had cats. I've always had dogs. In addition my oldest rides horses and we're on the second quarterhorse, really great breed for all kinds of things especially temperment but not for taking 6' jumps.

My criteria in a new dog is that it should be an already housebroken female with low territorial issues, and everybody in the family needs to bond with her. My great golden retriever absolutely loved him from the first moment and she normally was standoffish with strange men. We need a new one, I look through petfinder.com periodically to see what's at the nearby shelters.

adoracat -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/12/2007 3:18:30 PM)

Sir loves kitties and has two at his house....i'm STUCK with the two beasts here.  wolf is allergic to cats....  *sighs*  i am not physically able to handle the two dogs here.  husband PROMISED that "oh yeah, the kid and i will take care of the dogs"

we have a mostly-black german shepherd and a blonde shepherd mix who is afraid of thunderstorms to the point of crawling in my lap.  both of them have knocked me down and the black one has dragged me across the yard.  and that's WITH training on both of them!  they follow voice commands well, but both of them are bully-headed once they decide they want their own way.

kitten, who doesnt want pets anymore because she always ends up doing the bulk of the care...

ready4srvce4all -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/12/2007 3:35:06 PM)

I'm past the age for pets.  However, Mistress and Her family had two dogs and fish when I moved in.  I could not stand one of the dogs, it just wasn't reliably housebroken despite all of our efforts between 4 people and a kennel...he's been returned to whence he came (Hoooooray return dog to Oklahoma....HOOORAY BEER).   I rarely have much to do with the fish, I never owned any, and at most I'm asked to help clean the tank, because I know that even though it's no big deal to feed them, I'd forget.

Hopefully, any future pets that come into the house (with two UM's, that's always a possibility)  are of the low maintenance type, like the fish.

hideandseek -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/15/2007 10:43:51 PM)

I just also have to add  yay daschunds!!!

If you decide to get a dog, definitely consider the breed.  They are so sweet and loving and much easier to handle than a big dog in a small space.

chellekitty -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/16/2007 2:31:22 AM)

but very smart and cunning...if you can think 3 steps ahead of a dashchund, you will be good...but they tend to be a little ADD, when they are not being couch potatoes, and can think fast...can you? lol

edited to add:
or is it that rare strain of OCD-ADD where you're constantly changing what you're obsessed about

Has anyone heard of fixed female cats spraying??
I have a mother and a daughter and they are so territorial and careful around oneanother that they spray (used to outright dislike eachother, but have mellowed once somethings clamed down in my house). I have changed their food and now keep them outside so the damage is less smelly. It seems to not really happen anymore, but that could be cause I am on them and the outside thing.. however I do not trust them at all! They also make me itch so they do not often get cuddles from me, poor lil things, but the other occupants of the house keep then in attention.

goddessoflight -> RE: Pets (not the human kind) (7/16/2007 5:33:30 AM)

If  your wanting to add a puppy its best to have the room for one. Dachshunds are fairly small but they do like to dig and chew and can be a bit of a problem. Read up on a breed your interested in and see if that fits your lifestyle. Don't get to emotional about it before you decide if you really have room and time for another pet. I once sold a tiny yorkie to someone that had two cats. The cats lived there for years and it was their territory. They tried and wanted to kill the poor little yorkie.  If you did decide later on that you want a puppy, make sure you have the time, room, knowledge of that breed, and money to feed it good puppyfood. Also be careful of getting dogs from a shelter. Many many dogs go through there and diseases abound. I don't mean a disease like a cold or something easy to get rid of. I'm talking about parvo, distemper etc where you might have to put the dog down.  If one does get a major disease do searches on the net for cures. I'm been to several vets and most have no idea about natural cures that work some of the time ( depending on their immune system) Their advice is usually to just let the dog or puppy die. Or they do expensive treatment knowing the dog is going to die anyway but they line their pockets in the mean time. Someone told me about a shih tzu they had, it was about 12 years old. The vet ended up charging them 10,000.00. Two days later the dog died and the people had to get a loan or be sued for the money. They are still paying the loan off!
I also agree about not getting an over priced puppy from a petstore. They are in a small area and can get diseases very easy also. Especially with so many people coming there and holding them and you don't know if they might have caught something from the cages they are in.
But, I'd say know the breed that fits your lifestyle, learn the easy ways to train a puppy. You have to be leader of the pack or they will become a terror and do what they want sometimes. Study the difference between good dog food and cheap crap.  If it's a bigger dog make sure you have room for it to run and play outside. If it's a small dog make sure you know if they are going to want to naturally dig and tear up things. ( never use rawhides, but get raw large bones, and that usually takes care of the "not" chewing up the furniture)
If you feel your not ready for a puppy yet because of room or whatever. Go visit with other dogs, take them for a walk to help out the owners once in awhile. Volunteer at shelters and help find a home for other puppies if you have the time to do it.
When your ready for a pet it's really best to buy from a breeder direct. You can talk to them about the parents. They can give you advice in so many different areas. The puppies weren't exposed to so many diseases from being moved around and being around many other puppies.
Read, research, and when you two are ready you'll know when it's time
