I could have many but only want one.

I have been an asshole and even verbally and emotionally abuse while IN the lifestyle and have seen many many others as bad or worse.

I agree a few of those early replies were needlessly harsh but take it as a lesson learnt.  It is a reflection on them, NOT you, that they'd rather be short, cynical and condescending to a newbie as opposed to simply 'X'ing out of a topic they've obviously got little time or patience with.

To the uninitiated, there is a blurred line between D/s and abuse, if any line at all, and in that context, I find your questions reasonable.  And I admire your courage for asking on a public Forum, because in theory it shouldn't require courage at all - until some no life gives you grief for daring to be new and inexperienced.

i have read through the replies that have been made to her, so far, and i honestly haven't read anything that i would consider to be "needlessly harsh", cynical or condescending.  Some of the replies have been very blunt, but none of them seemed terribly harsh, to me.  Simply stating an opposing thought about what someone else has stated, shouldn't be considered harsh or a negative thing.  How else do we broaden our horizons and gain any insight, if we only hear our own thoughts repeated or agreed to by others?  What's the point to having an open forum, if everyone agrees with everyone else? Posting your personal thoughts on an open forum, just as in any public venue, does take courage, because it opens the door for others to voice their opposing views.  But, to me that's not a negative thing and anyone who chooses to use a message board, such as this one, to post their views, should be prepared for whatever responses are made to it and take them for what they are, simply the views of others regarding what they posted.  Just telling her that her "theory" isn't true for everyone isn't something i consider to be condescending.  It's simply making her aware that her "theory" is not universally accepted.   There are a lot of people who look at BDSM in a very fantasy-oriented way and then end up with very unrealistic expectations and can become disillusioned when they find out that the reality of the day-to-day BDSM life is often vastly different from the fantasy.  Having and stating naive beliefs about BDSM can also make someone very vulnerable to being hurt or taken advantage of by those who would use that fantasy for their own purpose, without any consideration for the other person.  After all, not everyone who purports to being a Dom or a submissive or anything else is what they say and there are unscrupulous people within BDSM, just as in the rest of society.  Hearing from others, who have had different experiences in BDSM and who have different viewpoints about it, to me, should be considered a good thing and can help in dispelling some of the false ideas about it.   As for abuse (within any relationship, BDSM or otherwise), anyone can use anything to try to excuse and justify being abusive, including, but not limited to, "she asked for it",  "he deserved it", "this is what she said she wanted", "he should have known i meant it when i said i was going to make him squeal like a pig", "she enjoys it", "this is just what it is that we do", etc., etc. The key word to remember, in BDSM, is CONSENSUAL.  When one person doesn't want it, the consent isn't there and it is then abuse and not kink. As always, just my views. slave joyOwned property of Master David "Commitment transforms a promise into a reality."

Your freshness is.. refreshing.  I, for one, appreciate your cavaets and think some have done you a bit of disservice in the harshness of their replies. If everyone made a first post as positive in outlook and filled with this sort of wonder, this would be a better forum for it. I hope you stick around. I've actually been doing this longer than you've been alive and yet, I have the feeling you can teach me a thing or two or, at the very least, remind me of a few things I've forgotten so, thank you for that.

I bolded what I thought was the absolutely best line I've read all day long and the only cavaet that I would add is to put the word 'good' in front of the word Doms you've got me in 100% agreement. I've read that line at least five times now and if there's a better one on the boards this day, I've yet to see it. I don't agree with everything you wrote and the points I would have raised have been raised by others, but I see absolutely zero reason to bash you for bringing something to a post which is often lacking 'round this parts. If you are an example of the quality of 'newbie' coming up now, then when it's my time to go to the dungeon for good, the place is going to be left in good hands. You're just starting.. try to keep that wonder for as long as you can. It's a bit contagious, and damn it.. it just makes me feel good.

Welcome to the boards and enjoy your new path!

Celeste

A warning to MadRabbit...if people who I (as a newbie) talk to on forums jump down my throat with criticisms, and my Dom treats me kindly and is patient with my ignorance...who am I going to talk to more? I do not believe this is a problem for me, I pray I won't be proven wrong on this, but I believe my Dom is a decent person, and he will introduce me to things gently and respect me if things are wrong for me or if I do not want the same things he does.

I didnt jump down your throat with criticisms or roll up my nose and say "stupid newbie." I didnt go threw your post and tear it apart over every little thing. Nor can I stop everyone who does

The point of the post was to show you that you were representing yourself to be a naive lamb with the post you made.

You have come back and clarified things and have gotten better responses that werent overly critical.

People post here all the time who have clearly abandoned all sense of logic and reason as a "newbie"

I'm sure your Dom is a stand up guy. I dont really know and try not to make those assumptions. The punchline of the joke was centered around constant stories from people relating bad experiences about how they had a Dom who was "introducing them to BDSM" or "showing them the ropes".

(Your kind of fortnate to a degree. If you had been a newbie Dom, I doubt there would be any posts reprimanding other people for being too harsh.)

I understand that as do most with experience so stick around and learn to ignore those who'd just rather dump on your lack of knowledge to presumably feel good about themselves .

Wow...this is certainly different than your responses to 20 year old newbie Doms.

Enjoying that picture of those titties huh?

New doms and new subs.. two totally different creatures. I remember when you first came to the boards and how impressed I was by you. You seemed to have your shit together better than a lot of people twice your age and I do remain impressed by your posting and insight. That said...

Celeste,

For what its worth, I agree with Mad Rabbit, I can't stand people who change their act the minute fresh young meat appears.  I was thinking the exact same thing, and was going to comment on it but MadRabbit beat me to it.  I must be getting old!

Fair enough. Your right. I apologize to her and I apologize to Focus50.

It was unfair and horribly low. I wont edit my post to change it.

But I wont apologize for the point of what I was implying, but rather how I chose to imply it.

I am just slightly annoyed time and time again as new Doms who have really no other crime than being ignorant of the dynamic and still caught up in their own misconceptions get run off the boards without any of the "open arms" posts I am seeing here.

Nor was I doing that to this girl. There was nothing condescending or harsh in my post that I was aware of, just bluntly illustrating how she was coming off to people reading it.

No doubt, we all are! In this instance though, (and you can call it a flaw I have and I do recognize it as such), I tend to hold new doms to a higher standard. In general, I hold 'old' doms to a higher standard as well and it's probably because my mindset is one that.. well, you're a fucking dom.. you should be able to handle a little heat. Inspire me, lead me, bring out the best in me and allow me to amaze you with my appreciation for your leadership. Making comments which are beneath you doesn't tend to lead me in the proper direction.

I'll agree to disagree with you.

Oh, btw: your opinion does hold value to me. Not something I ever thought I'd say after the first posting exchange that we had. What can I say.. ya grew on me. ::chuckles::

Also, thank you for the compliments. I am sorry that I have lowered your opinion of me slightly with my poor choice of words.

But...when I was relatively new to the boards, I made a post representing myself to be just as naive as the OP here and I went threw a far more harsh public roasting.

And when the reverse perspective of this comes out and its changed from "holding a Dom to higher or stronger standards" to "holding a submissive or slave to lesser
or weaker standards", we will have 6 pages of posts with enraged people claiming that submissives are just as strong, capable, and equal as Dominants.

Au contraire! You have elevated my opinion by your acknowledgment of your poor word choice and your apology to the OP. As for the apology to Focus .. well he is a big boy .. he can take care of himself quite well.

I remember it well (not that I did any roasting of you myself) and you handled yourself with dignity and that's one of the many things which has impressed me. That continues.. I hope it always continues.

Yup, and then it will be my turn to be roasted. ::chuckles:: It's a good thing I adore fire play and have such a thick skin.

Bita I not only agree with you but I feel the same way. Therefore it can't be called a flaw .
They should be able to show that they have mastered themselves. IMO that doesn't automatically mean that 's' types are lesser or are expected to act like out of control brats. Agreement and half formed sleepy thoughts lol.
