ORIGINAL: Faramir A thoughtful conservative can disagree with President Clinton on many subjects, but also see some good, and be part of a dialogue - the same with a thoughtful liberal who disagrees with President Bush. -Immigration Policy -Tax Policy -Trade Policy Those would be areas where the President's policy or proposed policy would tend to be redistributive, favoring the havenots (immigration and trade policy) and in the case of tax policy provide more revenues for redistribution. We can't know for sure about the upcoming Presidential Tax Policy Advosry Commission report (it has been pushed back until Sep 30th) but my best guess is that they will propose something immensely populist - a two tiered tax system with anyone under $50k not filing. I think a liberal would be most critical (and correctly so) of President Bush's Foriegn Policy, which is entirely rightist, Hawkish, and is in direct contrast to the redistributive impulse that characterizes liberals. Mind you - most liberals don't feel this way. Just as the overwhelming majority of conservatives were incapable of any nuanced criticism of President Clinton (instead indulging in an emotional orgy of hatred) so to almost all liberals are incapable of any nuance in looking at President Bush - they are only capable of an emotional orgy of hatred. This is to be expected - partisans are partisans. PS - If President Bush is one of the worst presidents in history, then democracy must be systemically flawed - he was re-elected for a second term after we as an electorate got to see him in action. No confusion, no maybes or we will sees - America saw both president's Clinton and Bush in action in office - and hired him again. I'm a little "d" democrat - I am convinced democracy works in a systemically superior fashion to any other political system to date. Presidents Clinton, Reagan, GW Bush were all retained by the electorate for a second term - ergo, they were good presidents. Presidents like Carter and GH Bush were summarily dismissed - bad presidents.
