I think theres a larger point here, It's more than the ability to do the job, or the inherent fact that women are oppressed on some deeper level. People have made excellent points, but whose to say men don't get the short end of the stick too. And before you think I am crazy, please listen for a second, because I swear I have sociological evidence.

We, as women, have come a tremendous ways to being equal with the male gender, and any male with a brain will say that we can do the same work as he can, even if we are built physically different. But, when it really comes down to it, when a man and a woman are out of a job, whos the bum and whos just down on their luck? :) EXACTLY!!! Men!!! It takes us longer to rise higher in the employment and wage scale but when we fall we dont fall as far. This, is because we always have the roles (whether we want them or not) as potential housewives or babymakers -.-. But hey, it keeps us higher on the sociological social status scale doodad than the average unemployed male.

I can go on for awhile on this, my sociology instructor lectured on it for several classes last semester, but I happen to be late for math. Laters.

Siren, yes, you have to have the "ability" to do a job but you also have to be able to be *physically there* to do a job as well.
That seems to be a problem these days and people have a myriad of excuses.

Now THAT explains a lot....

Got to love a man that opresses his own child!!

Sad thing is it really might. Even when I was small, I was treated as strong. I helped carry the all the heavy things for my mother, and then my father as his back started to act up. The only reason this has changed is because my back has started to go out much too early and we don't want to make it worse.

exacty, my parents never told me there where things I couldnt do, If I wanted to help lift the couch my dad would have welcomed it and let me find out for myself weather I could or not, but since they always told me  I could I always thought I could and more often then not thinking I could really did make it so... I cant emagine telling anyone that they "arent strong enough" to do anything. Isnt it much better to let them try and find out what they can do.

Only if the thing they want to help you carry is very heavy and breakable! [:)]

MagiksSlave -> RE: gender roles and $$$ (7/30/2007 2:23:38 PM)

LOL I stay away from breakable things, but not because anyone told me I couldnt go near them but simply because I know myself better then that LOL

awmslave -> RE: gender roles and $$$ (7/30/2007 2:28:34 PM)

Everything seems to be explained as from every angle as the original post is concerned. I would like still add a little observation.
In majority female dominant male submissive relationships male is not a true sumissive (or at least male submissive is not seen as a true submissive by a female partner). Submission in these cases is rather (occasional) sexual fantasy fulfillment than coming from a deep genetic core. Threfore, thraditional life roles are still considered as a norm (male as a "breadwinner").
I do not buy the argument expressed by many that men have much higher earning potential. Average male wage and female wage differ only by less than 10%. Expecting male to be a provider has lot to do with societal conservatism (similar to: everybody needs to get officially married).  Many women could afford live-in stay-home slave. After all in TPE relationship it may not even cost much more than having a large dog. However, it would be unfair to expect women to think out of the box if the whole upbringing, society, media etc... directs them to seek men with money as a primary selection criterium.

Re moving a couch and stairways

All ya need is an open window, a rope, and the strength of will to pull like a buggar ... blame it on growing up in a family with 9 boys but my head tend's to think logically about these things ..when there's a will there is a way  ..

Totally off topic ...but hey, it wasn't me who brought up couches [:D]

i'm guessing you've never brought up a couch that way, either... either that, or i've always lived in a world of abnormally small windows and large furniture.
Personally, i think a REAL woman would build a large catapult to fire the couch right through the offending wall, then disassemble it and use some of the wood to repair the wall, and the remainder to cook me a nice steak.

LaTigresse -> RE: gender roles and $$$ (7/30/2007 3:23:44 PM)

Orrrrrrr, disassemble said sofa. Carry the pieces into the house. Re-assemble sofa while adding a few extra touches the company that made the sofa left out.

Cook herself a nice rare steak and enjoy on said sofa with a bottle of lovely red wine. Admiring her handiwork![:D]

Tristan -> RE: gender roles and $$$ (7/30/2007 3:45:17 PM)

Has anyone ever read the following book?  I've never read it, but I heard many good reviews from mainstream business media people when it came out.  I've been meaning to check it out of the library.

Just a question...if women were paid 71% of what a man is paid for the same work, why doesn't a company hire only women?  It seems like a company could pay women 80% of the going rate for men to assure that they hire only the best, and make a 20% profit above what any other company is making?  Or does corporate greed have a gender bias?

Because they can hire men in India or China for 20% of what men in the U.S. make.

Former co-worker of mine took 3 months maternity leave, came back for one day,  and handed in her two weeks notice. Great deal if you can get it.
i can't... so here i am working like a sucker [:o]

thornhappy -> RE: gender roles and $$$ (7/30/2007 4:05:11 PM)

Hi folks--

Want to earn big (or fairly big bucks, more than skilled labor)?  Be an engineer.

I'm an electronics engineer, never had kids, took 3 days family leave (to help out when my dad's hip was replaced) in my entire career. I've see guys in my field taking time off for doctors' visits, etc.  One guy at my contractor's workplace is only able to travel on Mondays due to family issues and it's driving some of us nuts, because we have to travel on Sundays to meet on Mondays.

The Electronics Engineering Times does a salary survey every year, and they are generally confuddled by the delta in pay.  Even when they correct for all the factors noted earlier in the thread, it still doesn't balance the pay equation.

Sometimes the type of job has more to do with who takes off than the gender of the person with the job. My ex literally had to show up to work even if he was sick, so he could hardly take a day off to care for the kids.
As for taking off for pregnancy, men are now entitled to the same period of time off for a new baby, so that's hardly a difference anymore. And in the long run, a month or two off for a baby over a lifetime career hardly means anything.

1. True the nature of the work can make a huge difference , however whe those jobs are open who fills them when they tell the applicants that "you can't have time off for the kids XYZ" ? Men much more often than women in large part because men focus on their carear more than family.
2. The law does now "allow" for men to do so as well however it is in large part theoreticly possible, not many folks can afford for both parents to take the leave of absense and if the choice is one or the other how often is it going to be the dad?????

A month or two per child + sick child tiime + school time off for the kids times three kids can certainly add up to alot of time off as well as alot of missed opportunity for advancement.

It seems that male subs, female doms, and male doms(?) may be physically strong or weak, but female subs tend to be physically weak. If they were physically strong, they probably wouldn't be submissive, or vice-versa.
On the other hand, not all jobs require physical strength.

I think the boy needs to stay quiet, this weak submissive could probably take him.

Should have read on I suppose, it seems he has seen the error of his ways

I realize my mistake, but don't be so sure of that. I know kung-fu.[sm=cool.gif]

Let's arm wrestle for the chance to go first!

The only problem I ever had on a job was getting a 3-section, extendable ladder back up onto the roof rack of an Econoline 350 van.  Prolly could've cured that with some gym time.

Spent a lot of time on top of trucks, under trucks, in trucks (truck including fire engines), up on roofs, etc.  Just found different ways to do the job - like using a crescent wrench handle as a "cheater", or leaving a bench seat half out of the truck so I could get it back in by myself.

So arrrrrr, bring on the men, arrrr!  Always enjoyed wrestling (the interesting things start when I lose [:D]).

Ahhh... then you know that most, if not all, styles of kung-fu, karate and other Asian martial arts are designed for smaller bodies, giving the woman the advantage over the man in most cases.

By the way, I just got back from sparring class. Care to play? [:D]
