I did South Beach and when I was disciplined to it, it worked very well for me.

But I've taken my perspective into a more long term view and keep it simple- limit my portions, very much limit my "reward foods", drink at least 1.5 liters of water a day, no eating after dinner, gym three times a week which is a 20 min cardio....

(There's that fucking EXCERCISE shit again!!!!!!)
To get annoyed at people giving you good advice is kind of lame.  Exercise, especially weight training, is a reality for losing weight and for overall health.  Not only does it tone muscles and burn calories, but it boosts your metabolism so that you will also burn more calories when sitting your ass down on the couch as you type snarky replies.

I could be wrong (it's happened before, back in the 70s, I think [:-]), but I though Gris was being "funny" with his replies to cuddles and LA. If not, shame on you, Griswold, they're nice ladies, being helpful.

Majik -> RE: I'd like to know (in a DIET fashion) what's worked for you... (8/7/2007 6:31:14 AM)

To start out I would suggest three basic things...Water, a good multi vitamin, and lean protein. If you find you can't get enough lean protein through your diet there are some very good whey and soy proteins out there. Most are in the forms of liquid, powder or bar. Sorry...as far as I know there is no protein pill out there.

Try cutting 'the white' out of your life...white bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. Now this doesn't mean not to eat bread, pasta and rice, what it does mean is to change them to whole grains. Grain bread instead of white, brown rice instead of white, and whole grain pasta instead of white pasta, oh and just cut out the potatoes completely. (On a side note make sure you get enough fiber in your diet as well...Mrs. Baird has a great high fiber bread out that gives you about half the fiber you need a day in two slices and it actually tastes good too!)

Also if you take time to eat that will help as well. Wait a minute between each bite will help you fill fuller faster and also help in that 'overfull' feeling you get when you sometimes eat to fast. Eating foods that are dense (heavy) also helps...it tricks your stomach into thinking there is more in it than there and you feel full faster as well. Boiled eggs are good at doing this. I eat two in the morning and usually don't eat again till lunch time. It also gives me 14 grams of the 100 or so grams of protein I need a day to maintain my weight.

There are alot of supplements out there you can take to help out as well, but as a rule I try to steer away from them if possible. If you would like a list of what works (I work with people and their weight and workout issues daily) send me a message on the other side.

samboct -> RE: I'd like to know (in a DIET fashion) what's worked for you... (8/7/2007 7:07:47 AM)

Aileen 68 has given you some good advice.
From the science perspective-
calories are calories- doesn't matter whether they're carbohydrates, protein, fats, whatever.
For you to lose weight- caloric intake needs to be lower than expended.
Humans have a very strong weight maintenance system genetically.  What this means is that everyone has a weight which is largely genetically determined.  (This is why there are fat tigers, lions, dogs, cats etc. as well as skinny ones.)  While the common mythos is that it should be easy for an obese person to gain weight, the experimental data have shown that it's just as hard for a 300 lb human to gain/lose 10 lbs as a 150 lb human.
What this translates to is that if you don't pay any attention to what your weight is- you'll hit your "target" weight and hold it.  (I'm sure there are exceptions.)  Hence if you want to lose weight on a permanent basis, you get to watch what you eat constantly.
What this also means is that if you just cut back on calories, you expend less energy to maintain your weight in your daily routine- i.e. might sleep more, move more slowly etc.  Hence, just cutting calories is largely ineffective.  The only long term solution is to burn more calories with exercise while maintaining your current caloric intake or cutting it slightly.  Large cuts in caloric intake coupled with exercise will take weight off as quickly as possible, but it will be hard to maintain.
Another myth- weight lifting- or the idea that once the muscles are there, they have to be kept fed no matter what they're doing.  Sorry- recent article in NYT showed that one doesn't work, the resting caloric expenditure between an individual with lots of muscle versus average showed very little difference.  The good news is though, that caloric expenditure doesn't have to be done all at once- being more active in small ways will also help burn calories.  Hence the idea of well, I don't have time for an hour long bike ride- but I can do 3 20 minute rides instead- well- just as good in terms of calories anyway.  Even if you can only do 1 20 minute ride- it's better than nothing.  I suspect that for cardio purposes though- a longer exercise period-i.e. at least 20 min. is called for.  Hence don't get fixated on an all or nothing exercise routine- just because you don't have time for a full workout, doesn't mean that you shouldn't do a shorter one.

Find an exercise you like.  From my perspective, the idea of traveling someplace to work out is a non-starter.  I'm not heading to a gym in a car or throwing a bike on a roof rack- I want to get changed, jump on the bike and go for a ride.  I find the solitude a nice time to think.  Others do better with motivation from a buddy- it's your call.  By the way- if you're like me, walking doesn't hack it.  I need to break a sweat to lose some weight.  Before I had issues with my ears though, I also enjoyed swimming.  The advantage of both biking and swimming over things like running is that any body type works for the most part, and these exercises strengthen joints rather than weakening them.

Bear in mind that individual physiology plays a very large role in how effective you are at taking off weight or building muscle.  Training alone will not overcome a genetic deficit.  I recognized a long time ago, that no matter how hard I trained, I wouldn't see the improvements that other people saw very quickly.  Hence, finding a buddy can be a two edged sword.  If he's a better natural athlete than you, it may get frustrating that you both train the same amount of time- but he winds up in better shape- can swim faster, bike farther etc.  Life's a bitch.  The only thing you can do is improve yourself- don't set the goal of trying to beat some of these people who have the kind of metabolism that most of us would kill for.

Summary- if you want to lose weight- wrap your head around doing some exercise on a regular basis.

Sam

caitlyn -> RE: I'd like to know (in a DIET fashion) what's worked for you... (8/7/2007 7:10:03 AM)

Here are some helpful suggestions:

a) Have a really messy relationship breakup. You will either gain or lose, a lot of weight.
b) Catch Pneumonia or Mononucleosis.
c) Become addicted to powdered cocaine.
d) Try cutting, instead of eating.

If all that gets you no success, you may need to try exercise. A five mile run every morning, rain or shine, hot or cold, will keep you slim and trim ... and what's great about that, is that you can still drink like a fish and never gain weight.

(By the way, a weekend diet is unlikely to give much succees. I may be wrong, but most diets take a week to really take hold and show results.)

Satyr6406 -> RE: I'd like to know (in a DIET fashion) what's worked for you... (8/7/2007 7:13:06 AM)

I have found that this works specially well for men and with a minimum amount of desired weight loss, it's perfect for you.

I struggle with a weight fluctuation of 10-20 pounds and it works for me.

Simply don't eat carbohydrates (especially potatos or bread) on any day that you eat red meat. A modicum of exercise is ALWAYS good but, just that red meat/carbs restriction should do the trick.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

CuriousLord -> RE: I'd like to know (in a DIET fashion) what's worked for you... (8/7/2007 7:36:47 AM)

-Eat non-fat everything you can.
Skim milk = yum.  Seriously, I drink a gallon a day.  Great for the muscles, too.

-Park far away from stores.
Unless you have somewhere important to be right away, like a meeting.  Catching a TV show doesn't count.
I hate seeing idiots looking for close parking spots, then going on walks later in the day!  Seriously, what the hell?

-Get a dumbbell and use it.
Whenever you're at the TV, or computer, or in a chair on the phone, whatever- just use a dumbbell in a hand.  Light ones burn calories better.  Heavier ones build muscle better.  Ask at a speciality store/gym to find out which weight(s) are right for you.

-Make those walks runs.
So what if you can't run a mile anymore?  Run 100 feet.  Can't do that?  Run 50.  Still too much?  Go for 10.
Point being, however much you can run, do it, then go back to walking.  If it's not exactly an impressive length, this might embarrse you if other people are around.  Suck it up.

-Stay cool.
This means be hydrated, not short sleeves instead of long when it's a tough call, maybe less blanket cover at nights.  Two reasons.
1.  The body will, if cold, burn calories for the specific reason of heating you.
2.  Using muscles causes energy to be released.  Heat, in chemical reactions, is also a consideration of equilibrium.  Since you're providing the activation energy, drive the reaction to the right by reducing the thermal product.  (If it's been a while since Chem, this just means it's slightly easier to burn calories when you're chillier.)
3.  Pools, often being a bit chilly, provide this effect.
4.  Drink enough that you can swet while doing other excerises.  It'll keep you cool, plus do that skin some good.

-Have sex or masturbate regularly.
Yeah, it's great for burning calories.   Sex is perferable to many, but, meh, whichever.  Masturbation is much better than nothing!

-Think a lot.
I'm not sure if this is true, but I think the mind burns a lot of calories.  I probably eat about 4-5,000 a fair portion of days (no joke- I'm surprised I'm not diebetic yet), and I'm not exactly obese.  Hell, I'm losing weight.  Part of this is being a 21-year old male.  I do believe a good bit of it to be thinking.

Anyhow, the last point kind of brought up something to understand about my weight-loss plans.  They're about exercise (since I mostly use weight-loss sorts of things to build muscle and starving oneself is contradictory to this).  So, besides the non-fat thing, others will likely have to tell you about dieting aspects.  Personally, I don't like dieting (as you can tell from my calorie intake).  It often starves both body and mind.. which is fine, if you're not fully using either and don't mind reductions, but, meh.  I think it's better to get the same effect with positive boasts instead of negative ones through just a little more work.

Also, a general disclaimer: this isn't a professional opinion nor anything else of the sort.  Just some ideas I have that may very well be flawed.  Use at your own risk.

Heh.... I put in an average of twenty-five or so miles a week of roadwork {with ankle and wrist weights} and I can eat anything and never gain weight. Matter of fact....if I don't use certain supplements, I lose weight.  ; }

Anyways, to Griswold :

Brother... I know ''water'' sounds hella boring, but if you can just change one habit and start drinking about a gallon a day and start walking at a fast pace a few miles every night -- Your life /body will change. Bet

Good luck

OsideGirl -> RE: I'd like to know (in a DIET fashion) what's worked for you... (8/7/2007 7:47:32 AM)

Well, rule #1: Eating less and excercising more will not work for everyone. In some cases it has more to do with what you eat, rather than how much you eat. In my case I typically take in about 1200 calories a day, but because I'm insulin resistant due to PCOS, it's the starchy carbs that cause me to gain weight.

South Beach Diet works well. It reduces carb intake and reduces fat intake. It's a good balanced diet.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: I'd like to know (in a DIET fashion) what's worked for you... (8/7/2007 8:07:25 AM)

I'll also point out that the metabolism of a fat person whose body is used to being fat changes to work very differently than someone who has just gained a few pounds for awhile or someone who just wants to get better toned.  Once you have taught your body to stay at a certain place, it wants to stay there.

RCdc -> RE: I'd like to know (in a DIET fashion) what's worked for you... (8/7/2007 8:16:11 AM)

Exercise will help burn calories - and yeah you don't want to hear that - however...

Sex.  A lot of it.  Many times a day.
It's good exercise.
And it works.

Peace

I maintain a strict low carb lifestyle, I do not eat more than 20 carbs a day, and they come from lean meat, eggs and veggies. You can get more info here at www.lowcarbfriends.com read the kimkins section under diets. If you want more info www.kimkins.com. It is like a very strict atkins plan before atkins started peddling all their own low carb junk and made it OK to eat bread and stuff like that. The fact is we eat way more carbs than we need, carbs are the culprit, bread, pasta, cereal...limit where your carbs come from like mostly from veggies, the weight will fall off..with sensible mainenance you can keep it off.

GhitaAmati -> RE: I'd like to know (in a DIET fashion) what's worked for you... (8/9/2007 6:11:43 AM)

find a toddler to chase around all day.....eat nothing but romaine lettuce and baked chicken. Drink only water.

I tried this for two months...I lost 4 pounds....given that rate of loss, it would take you 10 months to reach your goal...not too bad I think.....

favesclava -> RE: I'd like to know (in a DIET fashion) what's worked for you... (8/9/2007 6:16:59 AM)

chase a toddler all day? are you mad woman??? i give up after one hour.  those suckers can do more in one morning that the whole us army does in a week.
